I lived in Butte for a while. I lived in Great Falls for a while. I received a worse vibe at bars in Great Falls than in Butte. Therefore, I eventually quit going to bars in GF. Not to say all of the GF bars were negative and that everyone I met in Great Falls wasn't friendly but it was just a general feeling I got while there. I'm unassuming but nobody ever talked shit to me in Butte.
I'm sure people could list hundreds of reasons why Butte deserves shit talk but all of this like vs. dislike stuff is nothing but subjective.
I will agree with Hammer though. It seemed normal and acceptable when I was in MT for people to talk smack about Butte when it came up in conversation after they found out I had lived there. Butte is no different than any other mining town I've lived in that if someone flaps their gums for no real reason, they'll get a fist as a greeting. Mining towns I've been to in Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona all seem to have that same vibe. I've been in nearly every bar in uptown Butte and have never had trouble with anyone. But as I walked into Maloneys, The Cavalier Lounge, Silver Dollar, The Vu or whatever bar that night brought I was polite and friendly to begin with. No tough guy, macho crap. No chip on my shoulder. No air of superiority. Never a problem...not once. I'm not a complete Butte-apologist as it has it's troubles and eccentricities but it's all about the manner in which one holds themselves. Civility will be returned if given in most cases.
