Max Plank, the physicist who created Quantum Mechanics, said that changes in scientific paradigms occurred less as a function of an empirical refutation of the old theory or proof of a new theory, but rather because the persons who held the old theory (and the status and power in science) grow old and die off. Watching the inexorable crawl towards FBS football (and the debates on this board) by UM appears to confirm this. It seems to this outsider that UM fans at some point might tire of having such a budgetary, facilities, and attendance advantage over their conference mates and moving up would only seem fair. It is athletics and anything can and does happen, but UM, with its overwhelming advantages, should be ashamed of losing a conference match up in any sport in the BSC. Good lord, have you seen the UNC athletic budget? UM will move it programs up or they will stay in the BSC with a maxed out income until some combination of MSU, ISU, WSU, PSU, or NAU catch up with them in the lifeblood factors of a competitive athletic program (budgets, facilities, attendance, and salaries). When that happens (and it isn't imminent) the question will be, what is the impact on attendance and budgets when UM goes 5-7 or 4-8 in the BSC where nobody other than UM has any traveling fans?
