It was amazing that we got as far as we did with him as oc. My wife would call his plays from the stands...run up the middle right, run up the middle left and try a pass for 3rd and long.....occasionally they would mix it up and run to the left on 1st.

this Is way off.. 3rd and long was almost always a draw play.. It drove me crazy sitting in the stands and knowing it was coming... I think half the people in the stadium knew the draw was coming, but it still worked somehow.

Fundamentals and DOLA does wonders

This.

Strangely it’s been a staple across multiple HC’s over the years, esp Delaney to Stitt.

That.

Drove.

Me.

Crazy.

Source: played the game, was a fan in the stands and also a cheerleader during my UM years.

Just a heads up...saying pass or run is not "calling a play" calling a play would be...trips left, action motion, misdirection read. You really think a coach is just like...hmmm run to the left. No it's a sequence and a "run left" could have completely different results with different formations, pulls and zones. "Pass deep" is not a play call either. Now if your wife said. Bet they run "bunch-slot cross-streak" then we threw the ball on a fade or cross check down I would be impressed. It's amazing how many people think playcalling is like madden or something. It's all stategy and running your sets and countering what the D is doing. I promise no OC in the nation thinks to himself....maybe let's run to the left. Instead they are saying. The D is collapsing our right guard and stunting a lot while in man. Let's run something delayed to the left and try. Okay let's run out of our base set cause we don't run misdirection much out of it and could get them off guard. Perfect gain of 4, success ....do it all over again. Most the time the OC is always plays ahead of the game. It's crazy to think that everything is so basic. I guess naive is the word.

Very good article. Very interesting. I always liked Phen. Think I may have been the only poster sticking up for him at times. Glad to see him doing well. Interesting to see what former UM players say about him. I remember Cole or someone saying how good Phen was about breaking down tape and figuring out how to attack opposing D's. Am surprised at how bad Kramer's record was at ISU.

You are right, you were Phen most ardent supporter, on the other hand, I was probably the most critical of him...

Many of game I left thinking how in the hell did we win that game, it wasn't pretty they just got the job done.

After a while, I learn that Bobby could interfere with the offensive, due to the micromanager he was in the early days...

Phen, will be a good head coach, he made his bones, like Bobby he will surround himself with good people and if they falter they will be replaced, I think Phen and Bobby both learned taking care business is just as important as loyalty.

I also liked Phen, I was just critical of him.

I'm also critical of Coach Stitt, he would probably be a good HC, however, it baffles me that trying to run 96 plays a game on offense, that he can observe the other assets of the game, and make adjustment till after the game and watch film, too late then...

 Saying "run" or "pass" isn't exactly rocket science...I mean, there's only two fricking choices on each play.

I love Phenicie's dry sense of humor. "Offensive genius as a head coach." This classic should be on espn. For anyone that missed it the interview starts at :30 .

It was funny, I think the only thing he didn’t say was they’d do their best to make it a competitive game. Hopefully Stitt was listening & decides to live up to the label.

Well, he did put up 62 on them last year...Hope he makes it 70 this year for that unnecessary shot by Phenice.

Agreed. I didn't think he came off tongue-in-cheek, or just sarcastic at all. More like master douche. That really was a bad look. Hope they can hang it on him today...

I stand corrected.

Idaho State’s offensive coordinator Matt Troxel had a very brief three-month stint as one of Montana’s wide receiver coaches in the offseason. On Thursday in the Coaches Show with Riley Corcoran, Montana coach Bob Stitt sarcastically said he was happy to provide Troxel with a “three-month internship.”

Rob Phenicie, Idaho State’s first-year head coach, spent time at Montana in the past as well, serving as the Griz offensive coordinator from 2003-09 under former head coach Bobby Hauck.

In his press conference with local media on Monday, Phenicie turned up the sarcasm too in comparing his current program to Montana’s.

“First of all, we’re playing the flagship team of the conference,” Phenicie said. “They have the best facilities. They have the offensive genius as a head coach. They come out of the tunnel with all these neat flags and we’re just lucky to be on the field with them. We’re just poor little Idaho State. We don’t have a big ole stadium. Our stadium’s old. We’re just lucky to play ‘em. We’ll go out and give our best and hopefully keep it close.

I like the emphasis that Stitt places on character development. And yeah, he likes to win too :thumb:

The Phenecie / ISU bunch not looking so classy today. Hopefully that's not something he brought over from Montana...

I'm not an Alphagriz fan but he pegged Hauck/Phenecie. LOOOOSSSSEEEERRRRSSSSS in the big game of life.

Hmm. Given his pregame interview, post game handshake, and postgame interview, I'm glad we no longer have that culture. Not that I believe for a moment we ever had that culture.

Is he teaching his players to "be dirty in the pile"? If not he had better get on it. It clearly was the reason that they lost.

What's ironic about his douch-like statement is that he absolutely correct: with isu's shitty facilities, shitty program and shitty fan base, they absolutely do not belong in the same league as Montana.

So the reverse and more accurate quote would be

“First of all, I'm coaching the shittiest team of the conference,” Phenicie said. “We have the worst facilities. We have a sand pounder as a head coach. We come out of the cave with all these neat Middle fingers and we’re just lucky to be on the field with them. We’re just poor little Idaho State. We don’t have a big ole stadium, we have a barn. Our stadium’s old and shitty. We’re just lucky to have any fans in Pokie. We’ll go out and give our best, but lose again.
