before the season, i pointed out that we were thin and inexperienced up front. with seyfert hurt, we had only andrew strait back as a legitimate experienced big man, while hasquet, sharp and van vliet were all freshmen, and chavez hadn't played in two years. i said this would be a transition year, while our younger guys got added experience, and before chase and vanderjagt arrived. it would be next year and the years after that we would have dominant front lines and fully arrive as a big sky power.

oh! the hoots! the howls! you don't need big men to win the big sky conference, i was told. and i must say, as this remarkable season has unfolded, in which the griz have won 16 games, and led at halftime in four of their five losses, i was beginning to question my own belief.

no more.

simply put, the situation i foresaw has become worse, with the apparent injury to van vliet, the mid-season slump by hasquet, the evident youthfulness of sharp and the failure of dlouhy--a true two guard--to provide any consistent help up front. that the griz have come this far with this much youth up front is truly testimony to the remarkable coaching job turned in by this staff. even in the big sky, we've protected our home turf, while turning in two wins on the road. in a year when anything can happen, hasquet might become productive again, and sharp emerge as a force late in his freshman year.

just don't forget, it's next year and the years after that are going to be truly memorable for this team and for our program. that was true at the beginning of the season. it remains true now.

go have a cappucino you negative jackhole!...the next thing you will be back on your D1 football rant or your inner city guard for Selvig.

I will take 6-3 with MSU and NAU on their way to our location and lots of folks gaining experience. Dlouhy was on his way back tonite when he was tossed out. He hit two threes now we just have to get him slamming the quick step to the hole and get him in on D. Locker room is a tough place to defend from.

backer (fellow friend of hoops)-I think city is simply trying to be upbeat about the future. We do have problems with post player consistency, other than Strait. Dlouhy was starting to have a nice game tonight and was playing some 4 before being tossed. I feel our situation in the post will improve significantly next year with the addition of Gus Chase and Van Vliet and the development of Sharp and Hasquet. I suspect Vanderjagt will redshirt. :thumb:

Give it up if you are always worrying about next year you are really not going to enjoy any year. I will take the 16 wins and the only 1 real loss that we enjoyed tonite. Most every year we are going to lose the last game of the year. I suspect it will be fun right up to that moment. We only have one loss at home and everybody loses on the road.

I don't see anything wrong with city's post either. I too, was drinking the kool-aid early in this year. I had visions of 24-1, and a 12 seed. However, this is clearly a young team, that will be scary good next year, and the following year. I think the future looks bright.

I am not giving up on the season at all. City has always been Joe Negative. He comes in here about 4 times a year with his worn out lame arguement of why the Griz need to be D1 in football. After everyone is sick of that, he starts in on Selvig and why he will never have crap unless he gets an inner city point guard, that is his code for recruiting black players. I Have nothing against having black players, I loved Vicki Austin, even though we never really recruited her. He has been doing it for years now and it is the same ole same ole.

As for Dlouhy getting tossed I think the officials should have reviewed that play. When Matt grabbed that kids jersey he was ON THE GROUND, not airborne like some say (see mslacat) I didn't think it was flagrant. I also didn't think the ISU player shoul dhave been tossed. He should have been helped off the court to make sure he was OK and it would never have happenned. I really think it looked far worse because the guy jumped when Dlouhy grabbed him and it looked horrible. In fact I at first even thought it was flagrant until I could see the kid wasn;t in the air when he was grabbed. The officials could have reviewed this play. ISU was so fired up after that it was all over but the shouting. We had an 8 point lead when that play occurred. Dlouhy ws playing great and the air went out of us, they got major momentum and it got out of hand quick. Not too mention the officials called a foul for breathing the second half.

I agree with some of city's thoughts - this team will only be better in the future. The sting comes from losing to the "worst" teams in the league (although early on I predicted ISU would be one of the best). I was too concerned last year with small post men, but Straight plays like a 6'11' guy, so that is no longer in question.

The truth is the BSC is very close in talent, no team is leagues ahead of others, as much as we wanted the Griz to be. Tonights game was affected by officiating, to the point where it was impossible to tell what was going on, but that is life in the BSC (I'm sure many a team has come to Missoula and wondered the same thing).

The bottom line is the Griz will still battle for the BSC championship, but if the bandwagon fans would buy reserve seat tickets instead of GA Barnball and I would appreciate the extra room. Thank you for your cooperation.

Breathing definitely was out of the question in the 2nd half. Road game and it is history. Time to worry about the trip to PSU and Eastern. Not really I think it will be fun to watch the home games and hope the NAU has some breathing problems next week on the road.

I see the Griz in the same situation tonight as they were on Thursday night. NAU will lose at least one more game on the road, so if the Griz win out, they still host the tourney.

The sky is not falling, the Griz are not doomed. They've got the big rivalry week coming up and it sure will be nice to be playing at home. Sometimes the road really eats your lunch.

If you would have told me at the beginning of the season that the Griz would be 16-5 (6-3), and poised to make a run at hosting the BSC tourney - I would have taken it in a heartbeat.

Let's not lose sight of what the Griz have accomplished, and of the fact that they are still in excellent shape. :thumb:

The Griz had a bad weekend, real simple. It's disappointing, but it happenned. Now they have some glaring weaknesses to work on and play their best basketball in late February and march. Krysko knows defense is the key and they'll be playing great when it really matters.........the tournament. I'm hoping for a big crowd for their next homestand. This team STILL is very good.
