Our Defense Sucks

Bakun "We have always had a defense that we knew would most likely shut anyone down". Unless you weren't a Griz fan in 1992-1996, you might want to retract that statement.

Why would i retract? Thats my point exactly. We have always had dominating defense that we could rely on and we knew they would get the job done. This season though? We must score a ton of points otherwise?

Are you telling me your still confident enough to say we will shut everyone down? I think a few changes, adjustments would get our D back on track

No, i'm telling you Montana hasn't ALWAYS had a dominating defense. Did you see the Delaware playoff game in 1993? The Boise State and Idaho State games in 1994? The Idaho loss in 1995? Wild games at Northridge and Eastern Washington in 1996 in which the Griz won in spite of giving up over 600 yards of offense in each of those contests? The national championship game at Marshall in 1996? I can go on if you want me too.

Oh, i gotcha lol my bad dude. No i consider Defensive dominance for a 13 year period to be quiet sufficient in my reasoning.

It's not my intention to bash the team, i would never do that. I'm just not confident in our D right now, and i feel its scheme related, it has nothing to do with talent. Which means its absolutely fixable.

I will save bandwidth and not type the 400 paragraphs needed to list all the reasons we suck so bad and just do it with a few blatant observations.

Overrated DL
Overrated front 7
Lost
Bad scheme
Bad tackling
Horrible tackling

I dont care who we played, our defense isnt getting it done. You idiot one game fixes everything morons are not even smart enough to see this and I am sure you will instantly go into cliche mode.

"We got the W"
We wont when we play an average team. (like NAU)

The worst part is this is the same sh*t we watched last year and there is no improvement since last year.

We still are the worst tackling team I have ever seen, its embarrassing. I was wishing that we still had the bear paw on the back of the helmets so nobody would know the Griz suck that bad at the most basic fundamental thing about football.

Still play zone and give up huge chunks of yardage.

Safetys are just as bad as they were 3 years ago, sorry I was a Hermanson fan and he is regressing and maintaining the status quo.

Gregorek is over his head I didnt think anyone could make me want Paulson back but he would be welcome anytime.

Our offense needs to keep the throttle open wide because our defense is not going to help us go anywhere.

Name me one game we've lost this year because of defense. The NAU game was completely on the offense. And hate to break it to you Alpha, but PSU has been trouble for every team they've played as far as putting up yards is concerned. The Griz held Adams to under 80 yards, forced 3 picks, and had a TD. Stick to trolling and Bison spewing, it's what you do best.

Its not losing game because of defense... Thats not happening, Its the amount of HUGE HUGE yardage plays that will eventually kill us, especially when we play a good team.

The NAU game reminded me of the way the basketball team played vs syracuse. Almost looked start struck and incapable, even though they were neither it sure looked that way.

If you think the Griz D sucks, you should see what the bitchers over on the PSU board are saying about theirs this morning.

AG1, I can't argue with any of what you said. Though I have to remind you, your boy was the one who decided Ty was coordinator material. I'm frustrated watching a great defensive play backed up by things like a drive by PSU's BACKUP QB!!!

I still don't think Tripp, Coyle and Alex are overrated though. I think Holmes is going through sophomore growing pains and Wags has fallen in love with one style and is becoming pretty easy to block. As for the rest, well, why is anybody surprised by the play of the secondary?? They are the same GUYS AS LAST YEAR with the exact same scheme as last year!!! They are what they are at this point. Although I do think J.R. Nelson will be a great Griz corner in the future.

The coaches say Holmes is having a very good season.

They hung 390 yards passing on us.....not good. However, I thought they did a good job of stifling a very good runner in Adams to under 100 yards. That guy is scary good and has averaged 120+ per game and our front 7 shut that down pretty well. I thought Chief looked like a "shut down" corner for the first time all year....breaking up 3-4 very tough plays and making 2 picks....one was outstanding. The rest of the secondary and safety play is a bit suspect, and I think a lot of that is due to no pressure on the QB. Although it's not perfect, it's a big step up from last year in my humble opinion.

I66 of the passing yards came later in the game, after UM was up 45-20 and substituting freely. 71 of them came on the late long pass, in which the defender was in good position but the pass was perfect.

Even MD senile as he might be said the D had some things to get fixed. He has brains enough to know if you give up big plays a depend on a Red Zone Defense multiple times, its blow up on you.

As far as Ty goes, all that nonsense in that strip club down younder was a BH inspired conspiracy to hsve reason to can him without have to admit he had hired an incompetsnt DC.

The defense committed to stopping the run and challenged them to beat us with the pass. We did and they couldn't. We won and they didn't. On to UC Davis.

Interesting quotes from Ty that echo some of AG1's concerns:

“I would’ve hoped it was less than that. Obviously, we gave up too many yards. I told the defense Sunday night … I don’t like the bend-don’t-break thing. That’s not us. Unfortunately, it has kind of been us.”

One thing that gets Gregorak’s dander up is poor tackling. He’s not happy with what he’s seeing.

I don’t like it right now, I just don’t,” he said. “I’m sorry, but we tackled very poorly last week. ... We have to become a great tackling team. We work on it all week. There were missed tackles today. I haven’t counted them, but I promise you I will in the morning. We have to become a great tackling team.”

Let's hope they are able to implement the changes needed to live up to the pre-season hype and make a deep playoff run :thumb:

Gregorak needs to mix up his schemes every once in a while. Playing a weak cover 4 the whole game won't get it done. Rushing 4 the whole game won't get it done.. What ever happend to blitzing a linebacker or mixing it up a little. Like AG1 said.. Gregorak is in over his head. There is too much talent to be playing lil grizzly football on defense..

One kid who has solid tackling is Lebsock. No need to worry about his fundamentals. Some others need work.

Yes Lebsock is about the best tackler on the team....and he hits people. Lebsock is a playmaker he is always around the ball and makes sh*t happen.

Its a good thing he gets a lot of bench time......and we keep rolling Tully and Hermanson out there each week. :?

As far as the stupid comments about our defense present or past we have had one year in the last 20 that you could even argue we had a decent defense. Anyone that uses the phrase "dominant defense" and the Griz in the same sentence is delusional.....unless you are saying we were just beat by one.

There hasnt been a dominant defense in the BSC since..........well I cant think of one.

NDSU has a dominant defense. Ty is right.......its about time!

:coffee:

A dominant defense holds the #4 team in the country to 296 for the entire game and they didnt even play that well. We gave 300+ in ONE HALF of football.

You guys have no clue what great defense is, probably because you have never seen one in WGS unless it was the other team we were playing.

Gregorek is putting unneeded pressure on our secondary by not having balance in his defense and he did the same thing last year. We rush 4 and the QB has 6-20 seconds to sit back and find somebody open, so our sub par corners and safeties are forced to cover people (usually in a zone) for twice the time other teams have to. We make average QB look good and good QBs look great.

Ty just sits back and lets the offense dictate the game to him, just keep everything in front of you and wait for them to make a mistake.

We are already giving up huge plays being safe, so it makes no sense to be safe. Send 6 and dictate if we give up a big play ITS ALREADY HAPPENING so who cares?

I also dont believe he works on tackling in practice, if he does then we need a new coach that knows how to tackle. I would suggest PR line up some cones and put on a demonstration but I dont want any of our players getting hurt..............

Seeing as Lebsock made the transition to linebacker this spring, I'd say it makes a lot of sense that Tully and Hermanson would play over him at the safety spot. Nice try though, Alpha.

Are you really going to argue that he couldnt play the spot he did all through HS better than either of the two that are there now?

I know he switched to LB and I would still let him play safety.

Our defense doesn't suck, but like I said, we don't currently have a good enough defense to win a championship. That's not to say we might not outscore some teams with better defenses, however. I mean, you still have to score at least two points to win a game.
