Kind of funny when people on here bitch about us not paying our coaches enough and then get mad that our President is driving a Ford Fusion... It's a family sedan and one of the cheaper and more economical cars you can buy! OMG, he better not have sattelite radio in there!

What the hell do you want him to drive? A 94 Honda Accord?

actually if he were driving a beat up 75 gremlen for a university provided car some griz fans will be upset that he was provided that. I think most of this board wants him out of missoula.

This would be it... not overly expensive... but it is a hell of a lot more than he has earned.

I don't know why we are discussing cars on e-Griz, but in defense of the Ford Fusion, I have a 2012 and it is the nicest car I have ever owned.

Nice lines. Appropriate color choice. Reminds me of the Olds Intrigue I drove back in the 90s. I'll be on the lookout for one of these.

I once stayed at the Holiday Inn Express with my 64 Ford Fairlane. ( it has an 8-track!)

I'd prefer that he drove one of many of the other sedans that are already owned by UM & not purchase a new vehicle for himself.

guess i don't see what the big deal is. you want the same type of treatment? do what you need to do to be a president of a university. who cares what the average income is of the rest of the state? your football and basketball coaches exceed that average by a mile too. if you want all the perks that come with being a college coach/professor/president...be a college coach/professor/president. :o

No, it really isn't.

Lets see... Royce is directly responsible for not only the additional salaries of the personnel that he basically fired, but the huge losses in donations, enrollment, & attendance. He also tarnished the reputation of UM when he decided to botch the Saudi rape situation.

He has cost the university millions of dollars, & the university has to make budget cuts, but he deserves a new car? What's wrong with driving one of the sedans UM already owns? With the money that he spent on a new car, he could have saved someone's job or used the money to help balance the budget.

Engstrom is putting his selfish "needs" ahead of the needs of the university & his staff. That is one of the qualities that separates a good leader from a very poor one, but we knew that already...... :coffee:

Regardless of whether your points are correct or incorrect, or whether or not you like Engstrom, a car allowance is a part of the university's contract with the President. It's certainly not an unusual perk. UM already pays its staff and administration at the lowest levels of universities in the nation. To expect that a car allowance wouldn't be included in the package is naïve.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't get a car. I am saying that the university shouldn't be purchasing NEW cars when the university is making budget cuts. The university has a fairly large fleet of sedans that he could be using. When making budget cuts, CEOs cut in unnecessary areas. Buying a brand new car for the CEO/President's comfort is an unnecessary purchase.

+1 There had to have been other cars to choose from that would have gotten Engstrom from point A to point B.

My hunch is that the vehicle is leased, not purchased.

And that is part of his contract; part of his salary. I guess I don't see why this is an issue, beyond the dislike for Engstrom.

And you sure want to be competitive with your peer institutions to attract the best talent.

These types of "arguments" are not worthy of even talk radio. Pettiness is the new norm? What's next? Restrict travel by UM officials? No lawn mowing on campus? geezus...there are major issues in Montana and elsewhere..this ain't one of them.
