Just a few comments from afar.
1. Can't say that this season wasn't a dissapointment. I can look at the pre season prospectus and assume a couple things:
a. improved play at point guard: With Cam's year last year, there was no reason to believe that it woudl take 3/4 of the year to get consistent play at the point guard.
b. Perimeter Shooting: I would have assumed all year long that this would have been the strength of the team.
c. Leadership: With Strait, Hasquet, Martin, I would have assumed that this team would have visible on the court leadership.
Conclusion: We didn't have consistent efforts in those three catagories all year long. None of which is really coachable.
What happened:
a: Rundles was a disapointment this year. I avoid deconstructing players. I would have assumed the kid was headed for great things, and for whatever reason, he just didn't play well. I hope despite what I have heard, that he chooses to return for next year. CET grew into the role late in the year and became a go to guy later on.
b. Perimeter shooting: For a stretch between december and january, the shooting from the perimeter was horrid. Martin was bi polar from long distance adn only later in the year did Staud step up as a 'consistent' threat.
c. leadership: Comments about about the lack of fire, the lack of urgency, at times. This is part coaching but mostly players, if guys are looking to others to make plays then you have a problem. This is effort sometimes not vocal. It moves its way into other key areas, most notably rebounding. Rebounding is all about effort and desire and little about technique. If you have four guys worried about htemselves and 1 guy rebounding, you are going to have problems.
You can pull an Eddie Sutton and break out the football pads, but in the end it is effort to go up and get a ball while having a bad night. Tyler Hansborough from UNC is a perfect example. He'll sacrafice his body for that ball and look how contagious it is to the rest of the team.
Anyway, based upon what transpired this year two last comments.
1. The season ended about the way it probably shoudl have. Expectations aside, and comments about coaches aside, there were significant limitations to this team.
2. Next year: Do or die. Hasquet is a senior, the team isnt loaded but many of the basic problems coudl be answered with the additions of stockton, mcgillis and taylor. Team should be better. Team needs to develop an identity a calling card and stick with it.
I personaly think Tinks is smart enough to realize this and will make the necessary adjustments. As much as I have been around the guy, I really think he is capable of making the necessary adjustments.
