PR has been using that comment about Ash since he was hired or his first couple years at least. While probably true, I would bet it came from players that got recruited by Kramer. I'll also say that it would be hard to find 100% of any team that like 100% of their coach.

I said nothing about whether Cat players liked or disliked Ash. I said what I said. Nothing more. And I'm glad you agree that it's probably true. You presumably know Ash. That doesn't mean he's not a good coach or hasn't been building a good program. I have no problem giving him credit for the improvements he's made and the success he's had.

Any president who doesn't realize what a great marketing tool a winning football program is for his/her school is stupid to deemphasize its football team. Gordon Gee, when pres. of U of CO, had winning teams, went to Ohio State & brought OS to where it is, now. Football puts the school on the map, better than any other marketing program.

Dennison knew this. I'm sure MSU Pres. Cruzado knows this. That's why MSU is where it is, now. I do not know Engstrom's position on the value of Griz football to the school. I believe he had to do something to clean up the program. One of the faults of a pres. who builds a football program for the top spot is bringing in players & coaches who bend the rules too much. I believe Gee had to retire at OS, due to problems in the football program during his tenure. Dennison retired at the right time. Engstrom had to do the dirty work.

I hope Engstrom is committed to keeping Griz football as not only a winning team, but a championship team. The test may be whether he can produce a championship team w/o headlines in the Missoulian of players & coaches appearing on police blotters. Cruzado seems to be doing ok. Nick Saban, too.

I pretty much agree with you, but what, specifically, do you think Engstrom had to do to clean up the program? What, specifically, needed to be cleaned up? What, besides firing two guys, do you think he did to clean it up?
He fired Pflu & O'Day. That sent a message that Engstrom no longer tolerates the practices of the past. Nothing else had to be done. Coach Delaney understands this very well. Every future coach & staff have to understand this. Zero tolerance. It was drastic, cost the program, but had to be done.

All college pres.'s & coaches now realize bending the rules, tolerating off-field misconduct catches up w/ the school & program. Just ask Penn State, Gordon Gee, etc. Ask Pflu & O'Day. It could be fair to say that UM's past success was built on a house of cards. Engstrom flattened it, & now the Griz are starting over.

It's time for the Griz to move on. MD has done a great job of advancing this program from the past, but he's still a reminder of that past. It's time after this season to bring in a new coach & staff, to be here the next 5-10 years. The Griz need program stability; no one knows how long Delaney will opt to be here. He's an interim coach, regardless.

Engstrom, Haslam, & advisors must go out & get the best fit they can find for this program & it does not have to be, maybe should not be, an in-house hire. I think a complete break from the past is in order, and it should be made after this season.

Zero tolerance of what? Kids still make mistakes and get in trouble, and they get punished just like they were in the past.

What do you think had to stop? Be specific. Name names. Don't bother with general statements. I wonder if you can name anything in recent history that had to be stopped.

Good post Grizzoula....IMO the AD should go after a young dynamic up-and-coming coach preferably out of the Pac-10 that not only knows how to coach but how to RECRUIT!!! One thing about the Griz from the last twenty years or so is that they usually had at least 12-14 players that were the BEST at their positions in all of the Big Sky. I just don't see the overall talent that the Griz used to have. Yeah, I know the old saw about "good coaches can make good players"....but actually it's the other way around!!! And yes.....I did play the game [a lot more than most  ]

Okay, I will be the one to say it: HE'S TOO FU(KING OLD!!!! PERIOD.
Seriously, he thinks like an old man: Slow to decisions. No urgency. Forgetfulness. Stubornness. Low energy. Can't keep up in-game. And way to fricken conservative.
What game was it that they took a knee before halftime? This is college-fricken-football for christ sake. Conservative playcalling almost always results in a loss. The Feags almost fell for that trap yesterday.
Everybody passes their prime at some point. When do you think Delaney was in his prime? 1982 @ Western? That was 30 fricken years ago!!!
I'm sure he is a great guy and knows a ton about football but the game has passed him by. He had already accepted that fact, put himself out to pasture, but we pulled him back in.

I will the one to say, again, that you don't understand the game of football. Low energy? You obviously haven't been around him in the recent years. Actually, remarkably high energy.
You mean, for his age?
He was playing checkers while Baldwin was playing chess.
The "game of football" is not the same as it was just 5 years ago, let alone 10-25 years. It's way more dynamic and schematic and dependent upon targeting matchups.
Boobyball, on the other hand, is a dinosaur that never really should have lived in the first place

Hmmmm...wonder what Ash was playing today then? Tiddlywinks?
