Suggesting that President Engstrom is somehow culpable or responsible for the actions taken by these student-athletes is as ridiculous and irresponsible as saying he's responsible when Katie Jones fails a chem exam. President Engstrom took decisive action -- I'll leave it to others to argue about the merits of such action -- by terminating those who ARE responsible -- at least theoretically -- for oversight of student-athlete activity.

This whole thing is confusing to me because of the timing of it. It has to be because of something that happened very, very recently, probably the last couple of days. Whether the JJ thing, or Roots thing, or the handling of it, I don't know, but it can't be because of the Marz investigation and report. That was finished I believe in January? If it was because of that investigation, all this should have happened before signing day, the hiring of the coordinators, and certainly before Spring ball started. It wouldn't have been near as bad then as it is now. Even the idealists of academia on the board or regents are smart enough to know the impact, at least the financial impact, of what they did today. Whether by choice or mandate, I would imagine most if not all of the coaching staff will leave, and a whole bunch of players too. I see a couple of pretty bad seasons coming up. If any kids out there have thought of trying to walk-on for the griz, this is your opportunity. I see it as my opportunity to finally score some pretty good tickets, but I'm not very happy about it.

A couple of comments...
- Relieved of duties makes me think they are still getting paid. How long are their contracts?
- This is the second time Engstrom has failed with his PR. You would think that after the debacle from hiring an outside investigation that you would learn to get out in front of the press so that you can have a clear message. Instead the story is leaked and a firestorm ensues.
- I think there was an attempted cover up involved and JJ is probably in trouble.
- Guff's quote says it all, "“Shocked is a good way to describe it,” Guffey said. “Disbelief … It could have major negative ramifications on Grizzly athletics and Grizzly football for a long time to come. Speaking from my perspective, it’s pretty scary.”

that said....if she REALLY wanted to take a stand...why didn't she do it when all of this crap was happening? griz players have been in the news for all the wrong reasons all of the time. assaults. rape allegations. dui's. tazerings. all things that didn't paint the best picture of the griz. if she wanted to be a hero....she could have sold her tix then and said she wouldn't stand for the direction the football program was headed. instead, she sat back, like everyone else, waited for her brother to get the axe, then decides to be vigilant. :?

Given what has taken place nationally at other institutions of higher learning I am NOT surprised. Although, I must also say that I am not sure that the two or three issues that the terminations seem to stem from have the merit for such a harsh act.
However, it does appear that this has been thought through at some significant level. It's sad to see to men held responsible for something that seems to have spawn from the long running tradition of the Ball which everyone in Montana comprehends as a big drunk-fest.
I am of the belief that major changes need to transpire in association with that event as well if this is the "root of all evil" as it appears to be. We have to accept & understand that under no circumstances is rape an acceptable offense.
However, liable & slanderous acts by non supporters cannot go without being addressed as well. High profile athletic programs will forever be the target of critics that forsee the educational system as being above the need for athletics (at least until budget reveiws, right!?!)
At least it appears that there will be continuity for the current team with coaches that are there now remaining in place... interims for both positions are reported to be announced within the next 48 hrs.

it still leaves a lot to think on over the forthcoming spring break vacation that is imminent. Athletes at "every" level have to learn that everyone wants a piece of you in some capacity. The University is on its way to healing.
Its just sad that these two men were sacrificed in order to substantiate the thought of progress toward that healing! Both of these gentlemen are victims of circumstance in my eyes and I hope that they & Griz Football, rebounds quickly & successfully from this.
Should make for a very interesting Spring Football Game, Junior Day & Community Event on April 14th!
