O'Day and Pflu FIRED!!!

I'm sensing this runs a little deeper than just Pflu's comments about JJ or Houston Roots getting arrested, who is no longer a member of the team. Two things have been brought to my attention in the last hour. 1. This was a preemptive strike as an NCAA investigation is forthcoming. 2. And to me, much less important at this point, Jordan Johnson is already GONE as of this morning. Obviously, no clue on either but those are the texts I've received in the last hour from people I know pretty well in Missoula.

I have yet to read any comments by alpha at maroon blood, but something like this will truly define who the bandwagon, fair weathered, and die hard fans are. With that said, time to move on to this.
(1) This is my saddest day ever as a GRIZ fan, and I pray GRIZNATION remains strong.
(2) We cannot change the decision made, rather we support it, or not. I will not judge this decision until all the details are out in the public. However, it personally effects me. I consider Jim O'day and his family, friends. Even the worse of what comes out, will not change that.
(3) This really does not surprise me. Pflu, and O'day happened to be the wrong people in place, at the wrong time. Seriously, how many years has the football program been running on this course? How many players have made bad, stupid, unreasonable, unethical, irresponsible, and stupid decisions over the last 7 to 15 years, maybe even longer? At some point something had to be done by someone to steer the football program, and University back onto a positive road. The one we have been traveling on has been old dirt, bumpy single lane road for way too long. Time to at least be driving on a paved smoother road (if that is possible in Montana).
(4) Every player, which are supposed to be young responsible adults, most of which are, had better finally learn the importance of making right decisions every damn time. The reason good people are out of jobs, as we speak, are because of the pathetic decisions way too many players made over the years. I hope every player, who made choices on the side of criminal activity, and on the wrong side, regardless of coach they played under, takes it upon themselves to personally apologize to O'day, and Pflugrad for bad decisions. Those guilty players need to realize they part of the whole equation in this happening, to good people.
(5) I finally hope every remaining GRIZ football player, finally gets the message, about the severity of dumb decisions, and they collectively commit to good decisions, and staying the hell out of trouble!!! It is so sad something like this has to happen before realizing why it is important to stay the f out of the public eye away from the field.
(6) Whoever we get to to fill whatever vacant jobs arise, that each new hire is committed to off the field discipline. That is the kind of coaches, and leadership the U of M now needs. With that said, maybe it is time to bring Van Diest aboard for coach. Personally, I would love to see Tim Hauck.
Finally, my prayers are out to any and everyone that have, or may lose jobs as part of this.

This is a great day. I just wonder which player gets arrested next? Keep up the good work boys, maybe if we are lucky we will see the NCAA step in a take some scholarships away. Yippy!
This is indeed a sad day for the University of Montana, the Athletic Department, and the Football program. I not sure anybody wanted this to happen. However as all of these incidents have been unfolding over the past several months and information has come to light about how the University, the AD, the the Coach did not handle these crimes and situations properly I had a feeling it was ultimately going to get worse before it got better(most of you told me I was crazy remember, when I stated that people will might/prob lose their job). I think that after all of this Phlu prob sealed his fate by making the statements about JJ. JJ is still being investigated for rape, and the AD let him back at practice. Those two choices with their actions of the past got them fired. I think the President realized that he had a sinking ship and that if he did not fire them that he was going to go down with them. Hopefully we will look back at this day years from now as the day we built the foundation for a clean, successful program that we are all proud of.
I liked Pflu. Wanted to beat him, but I liked him alot more than Bob. I think O'day and the old pres helped this become what it became more than Pflu. But you can't fire the AD without firing the head coach. This is just what happens when scandals go down. Whether its politics, business, or sports, scandal happens, the top of the chain goes.

The preeminent assumption in this thread has to do with the ongoing prevailing sex abuse scandal at the University, but no one in a position of truly knowing has actually said that. At least I haven't heard any confirmation. If this is the reason, I really don't know how you can't consider this a classic "Throw the baby out with the bathwater" reaction. With all that has gone on, at least what we know about, it seems to me that the best individuals to resolve this issue and turn it around would be the one's who are most knowledgeable about it, two of whom have just been dismissed.
I can understand the perception that the program is going in the wrong direction under Coach Pflugrad in every category but on the field, but his comments about Jordan Johnson last week would not alone be enough to cause a firing. Something else must be going on. One rumor I heard this morning is that the Board of Regents was a primary force behind today's action. If so, the University and the Board of Regents may have made a very expensive mistake.

HELENA, Mont. -- The University of Montana fired football coach Robin Pflugrad and athletic director Jim O'Day on Thursday, adding more uncertainty to a program already dealing with sexual assault allegations against two of its players.
Pflugrad, who was honored as Big Sky coach of the year last season, and O'Day were notified in a meeting with university president Royce Engstrom that their contracts would not be renewed, said assistant athletic director Greg Sundberg.
O'Day and Engstrom addressed staff and coaches in separate meetings Thursday morning, but neither gave a reason for the firings, Sundberg said.
"I think it was time for a leadership change, is what I gathered," Sundberg said.
The Missoulian first reported the story on Thursday morning. Engstrom sent a statement that thanked the men and said the university plans to announce an interim coach and athletic director by the end of the week.
Sundberg said he did not know whether the football players have been addressed.
"It definitely sets us back a little, but we have a good group of staff and coaches that will keep us moving forward in a positive direction and build on what Jim O'Day has done in the last seven years," Sundberg said.
Earlier this month, a university student accused starting quarterback Jordan Johnson of sexually assaulting her. No charges have been filed.
Johnson was temporarily suspended from spring practice while a temporary restraining order was issued against him. After the restraining order was dissolved last week for a civil no-contact agreement, Johnson was allowed to participate in a Saturday scrimmage.
In January, special teams player Beau Donaldson was suspended from the team after he was charged with raping an acquaintance.
Sundberg said those allegations were not raised Thursday.
Pflugrad was the Big Sky Conference football coach of the year in 2011 after he guided the Grizzlies to a co-conference championship his second year as coach. Sam Houston State defeated Montana in the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Pflugrad was promoted from wide receivers coach to head coach after Bobby Hauck left for UNLV in 2009. It was Pflugrad's second stint with the Grizzlies, after being an assistant coach from 1986 to 1994. In between, he coached and recruited at Portland State, Oregon, Washington State and Arizona State.
Montana went 7-4 in his first season in 2010.
O'Day was hired as athletic director in 2005, moving up from director of development for UM intercollegiate athletics after Don Read retired.
O'Day is a Cut Bank native who graduated from UM with a degree in journalism. He is a former reporter and sports editor at The Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell and was the owner/publisher of The Western Breeze newspaper in Cut Bank.

Then what is his job? He has nothing to do with the conduct of students? He has authority over the students and the whole university and obviously he has lost that control. What does he do then? What is Engstrom's job other than letting Pflu and O'Day take the fall for his incompetence?
