Observations from the Men's Maroon & Gold Scrimmage

Don't totally remember who was on which team, but at half the PGs (DeShields & Gregory) and the Bigs (Hutchison & Martin) switched colors.

1st Half:
Seemed like the offense didn't really gel in the first half, both colors seemed to lack intensity (or maybe the defense was just playing really well). Seemed like maybe the more experienced players (Jamar, and Ward) were holding back a bit to let the younger guys play a little more

2nd Half:
Lots of threes in this half. I think Gregory hit 2 treys, Jamar hit 2, and Ward had at least 1 three pointer. DeShields had some nice assists to Martin. Shooting was much better this half. There were some wild plays though, as the team started to pick up the tempo a bit.

And I'll do a run down of each players performances (I've included what stats I could find):

Coleman: 12pts, 12 rebounds, 2/4 on 3 pointers
I thought he played very well. Stats say he go a double-double on 12pts 12rebounds. I definitely noticed him going for the rebounds, even on the offensive end (he cleaned up some other people's messes on bad shots). Took some threes, but missed them. He also did a good job planting and drawing offensive fouls. I think in an actual game he would have been in foul trouble though.

DeShields: 9 pts
Did not have as impressive a game as Gregory in my opinion, but he did have a couple of beautiful passes to Martin for Slam Dunks. Very vocal when running the offense. I was also happy to see him on the court after the news of his eye injury.

Gregory: 18 pts, 6/10 shooting
He has improved a lot from what limited playing time he saw last year. GoGriz.com said he had 18 points in the scrimmage on 6-10 shooting. I want to say he knocked down 3 or 4 threes, and there was no hesitation in his shot. He also had some nice jumpers that were under pressure that he scored on too. While it will be nice to have Cherry back, I was thoroughly impressed with Gregory.

Henderson:
Did not get too much production tonight. I think he committed a couple of fouls too.

Hutchison: 9 pts, 7 rebounds
He looked improved from last year. There were still a few plays that he punched the pass away on, but it looked better than last year. Missed a few shots he definitely should have made. One example of this is when he waited, so his shot wouldn't get blocked but then missed the shot when no one was challenging him. Better at not fouling on defense now too. Also drew some offensive fouls.

Jamar: 14 pts
Looked like the same player that we saw at the end of last year :thumb: . Didn't notice him as much in the first half, but he started hitting treys in the second half.

Martin: 7 pts, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks
A bit raw, but did an excellent job finishing, and going for rebounds. Definitely would have fouled out in an actual game though. Had a good defensive post presence

Ward: 13 pts
I really didn't notice him much except for on defense in the first half. However, in the second half he started knocking shots down and helped extend maroon's lead.

Weisner: 6 pts, 3 assists, 3 steals
Hit some nice three in the 1st half, I want to say that on every three he scored he had a hand in his face. He can definitely create some mismatches on the perimeter, seemed to do a good job defensively also as he had a couple of steals

Wiley: 4 pts, 6 rebounds
I could see his athleticism, but he seemed a bit wild tonight. At one point he forgot to inbound the ball after a basket, and the other players had to tell him to get back there. I think if he learns to calm down a bit he will do well.

Young:
He played hard, but I don't know if he made a basket all night.

I believe this is a Missoulian blog (a somewhat humorous take):

What about Emerson. He played alot and I am certain he had 6 points, 3 or 4 boards and 3 assists. Overall, I think this team has a lot of potential and have a pretty deep bench in the sense that all of the guys on the bench can make significant contributions if called on. Ready for the season already!

Coleman really spread his production around, he didn't even strike me as one of the top scorers but on reflection it was just here and there - he did do well with defensive rebounds.

Put this in the other thread:

Jamar - looked like the same guy from last year, handled the ball bringing it up court a bit more, started out cool but warmed up late. He had some good deep shots and attacked well.

Ward - Pushed our two centers around easily underneath, hit a few good deep shots himself.

DeSheilds - Decent ball handling, did throw a few turnovers, some good steals as well. Outside shot wasn't there, dished the ball well and connected with Andy Martin for three easy assists that all led to slam dunks.

Weisner - Shot very well from the perimeter, played pretty good defense as well. Looks like a guy that will see a lot of playing time this year. Looked like a good swingman out there, grabbed some boards, hit a few 3s.

Gregory - Probably was the points leader tonight, 3 or 4 three pointers hit. Looks like he's backing up DeSheilds but can come out and play in a 3-guard set as a perimeter shooter. Really impressed me of the guys that were mostly on the bench last year.

Hutchinson - Inside shooting was choppy, missed a lot of shots he probably should've made. Had a few bad turnovers too. Good defense for the most part with a few good blocks. When Ward got physical with him he'd back off - also got called for 1 if not 2 offensive fouls (charge).

Martin - As a 7 foot frosh center he impressed me with his athleticism and ability to go get rebounds. He had a few good blocks and 3 slam dunks. His big issue was fouls, they weren't keeping count on them but I think he had 7 or 8 total. Considering our lack of size inside I expect he'll play this year.

Coleman - Quiet shooter but I think he made a handful of shots over the course of the evening, good mid-range shots and quite a few rebounds.

Emerson - Had some good moments, distributed well, hit a few shots.

Henderson - Didn't see much from him, looked like he cramped up and it was bugging him

Young/Wiley - Didn't notice much from them

My take is partly re-hash, but...

Jamar and Ward looked how you would expect. Those guys are studs and will have big years.

Gregory and Martin probably impressed me the most. Gregory looked smooth and confident. He was knocking down his shots and seems like he is ready to make a name for himself. Martin is way more athletic than I expected. He is still very raw and it is unfortunate that he won't be able to have a redshirt year, but I think he has some real potetnial.

GrizzlyJournal talked about the battle the small forward guys are having and I think he was right on. That group is deep and solid. Judging off of last night I would say Coleman has the inside track on starting but Weisner and Emerson looked very capable. I thought Henderson was behind the other three, but still played ok. Coleman rebounds really well and might be the best option behind Ward at the 4.

Hutchison and Deshields played solid. Both had good moments but both had iffy moments.

Wiley jumps and moves great for his size but looks like he could really use a redshirt year. I didn't think it would be possible but I think with Coleman looking good at the 4 and Weisner also being able to swing down there too, we might be fine giving Wiley a year to learn the ropes.

I would like to give big kudos to Morgan Young. He walked on last year and stayed around on his own dime this year too. He is under-sized and likely won't ever contribute much but he was working his tail off out there and I thought he showed why Tinks kept him around. Guys like that are a great thing to have in practice and can help a team by always pushing the other kids. His is a tough road to stay on and he should be commended to sticking to it.

Other bit of news is that Wes Knox quit the team sometime during the first week of practice.

So, maybe Coleman can turn into an Art Steward like player? That's the impression I'm getting from what you all have posted...

That's what I am hoping for. An Art Steward type player with more size? Yes please!

i'm most encouraged by the reports on martin and gregory. at the two most important postions on the court, it seems we have some good young talent in the system. too bad we couldn't have redshirted martin but the motto now is, go with what ya got. i accpet that.

good news on coleman too.

and thanks for the reports, journal man. much appreciated.
