I think Krysko is interviewing and not commenting just to give nitwits like us something to yap about until it's time to disect the scrimmage. :thumb:

You don't mean us, do you? :)

Just more proof that Montana, as GREAT a job as it is, is a stepping stone to bigger and better things for coaches who are successful here...

And it will ALWAYS be that, a stepping stone... :twocents:

Whether he is serious about the Pepperdine job or not, Larry is sending a worthwhile message to whomever needs to hear it. As discussed on here many times, coaches need to be paid more but, more importantly, the one year contract has to go. Of course, it still won't change the fact that coaches will use Montana as a stepping stone , but at least they'll feel more appreciated.

Potentially, Montana could lose the whole men's staff this year. I may be wrong, but I find it hard to believe that Tinkle would stay if Larry wants him on his staff somewhere else. And the pay would make his salary at UM look sick.

UM has been unbelievably fortunate to land , for the most part, outstanding coaches in both fb and bb over the past 25 years.

I only said that krysko loses my respect because it saddens me that we will be losing someone that grew up in montana, played for one of the best griz teams ever, went onto the nba...now wouldnt you think he'd have plenty of money and success from all that....it just feels like he is abandoning us and it would be cool if he could build a program up that he once played for.

Hmm... how could he "lose your respect" he was one of the all-time best players at the UM and this year won our first NCAA game in 30 years!

We're paying him very little compared to what other schools could offer, he's got to weigh his options. If he doesn't leave this year he's gone after next year for sure.

I could also argue that the program was already "built up" its just the Kennedy wasn't a good coach. Also coach K & staff have brought in a lot of talent.

Regardless if he goes or stays this program is WAY better off than when he took over it a few years back.

No one should ever pass up the opportunity to interview for a better job. You can always say no. Of course you don't want to say that too often or you develop a reputation but I don't think anyone would hold it against him if he were offered then turned it down. It delivers a big message about the 1 year contract and non-competitive pay. Frankly I think Larry wants to prove he can build a program and take it to the sweet 16 and I think he believes that could be next year. If he waited to do that next year or the year after, he could skip the lay-over at Pepperdine and land a really good job. If you are ambitious (as LK is) you want the big hit and from what I can tell Peperdine is no where near that point. I think Montana is on the brink. My gut tells me LK will be back regardless of whether he is offered the job or not.

Pepperdine had a decent team ten years ago. It wouldn't be a bad job. Malibu, with LA right down the road. I hope he doesn't take it, but if so it was a good run with him as coach.

Here's how I see it

Montana ---> Pepperdine, doesn't make sense on many levels.

- The talent is, at best, similar to whats at Montana. You've already got the skills here in Missoula and a group of talented guys that could be poised to win the conference again.

- At Montana Larry has "his guys" around him, he's "weeded out" the guys he didn't want and has the team he likes. Going to Pepperdine would be like hitting the reset button, he'd have to start building all over, give that another 2 years.

- Which brings me to my next point. In the sense of "moving up" look at the two good (not best) case scenarios. If Larry stays at the UM in the next two years and things get better the Griz will be a sweet 16 team, and Larry could probably take his pick between almost any Big 12, Pac 10 or Big 10 teams. If Larry has to go start all over at Pepperdine, they'll either be in the NCAAs as a 14, 15 or 16 and possibly losing in the 1st round or winning just 1 game. Where is that going to get him? He'll be able to move up again, for sure but he'll have to do more rebuilding and get set back another few years.

- Pepperdine is in a better conference, the West Coast, but they'll have to all but hope for an at-large big if Gonzaga stays as good as they have been. They went 7-20 this year, last at 3-11 in the conference. Gonzaga beat them 102-73 and thne 81-71.

To me, this team looks like they'll be tougher to rebuild (completley unprofessional opinion of course) and so can Larry wait 3 - 4 years with another mid-major to get that next good job offer. I would think even 1 more year with Montana Larry will have solid Pac-10 chances.

-----of course-----
There are positives to make the move as well;

- Beautiful area, still on the western side of the US, recruiting won't lag off too much.

- Pay, of course, and a longer contract

- Pepperdine (at least I don't think) has a football program so the bball team would hold the sole position of the "spotlight" team.

- The team is pretty young, if the right tools are there then Larry will have most of the current team for at least 2 years.

- The Big Sky will probably not have an auto-bid for the NCAAs in a long while, if Pepperdine goes (for example) 24 - 6 and loses to Gonzaga in the conf championship, they're in, if Montana did that, they're going the NIT.

I'd hate to see Larry go, I honestly think this time next year he could be coaching in one of the "major" conferences.

Have to worry what his wife and kids think, too. The wife may like the beach so well, that she will convince Krysko to move. Plus, if it takes Krysko 4 years to turn the Pepperdine program around, than that means more time for the wife to enjoy the beach.

In addition, his wife may find it easier to get a higher paying job in Malibu. With Krysko's higher pay, and the wife possibly getting paid more, I don't think Krysko will have any problem managing the higher cost of living in Malibu.

Also, Malibu is closer to Disney Land. His kids would love that.

But, I, like many others, don't think he is finished at Montana. Krysko, and his assistant coaches, have turned the Montana BB program around. But, after having lost Huse to the Bobcats, losing the head coach, Krysko, could reverse that turn around. He needs to stick around a little longer, and hire that other assistant coach. He owes it to stay at least one more year making it easier for a transition to another head coach. He leaves this year, the transition will definitely not be as good. Tinkle would likely become an interim head coach, and have to hire another assistant.

Anyway, I don't see Krysko leaving for Pepperdine. Sure, if he can turn a program like Pepperdine around, it actually will look good on his resume, even if could take 3 or 4 years to do. But, he has Montana pretty close to being a sweet 16 contender. Next 2 years if he stays.

I'm pretty sure that I don't see Krysko leaving this year. As great as he's been for our program and he's taken it to new heights there is one thing that could possibly worry ADs. Krysko hasn't even won the Big Sky regular season title. Maybe that isn't all coaching but I think he needs to take care of that before he moves up. Ideal situation for him and for us fans I think is that he comes back for one year rolls through the Big Sky, wins the tourney at Dalberg and then moves on to a Pac-10, Big 12, or Big 10 school.

The raise at Malibu isn't such a big deal at all. At that amount (alone), he'd be living like a high school janitor in the land of movie stars and movie executives!

He'll be coaching the Griz this season! :twocents:
