Here's how I see it
Montana ---> Pepperdine, doesn't make sense on many levels.
- The talent is, at best, similar to whats at Montana. You've already got the skills here in Missoula and a group of talented guys that could be poised to win the conference again.
- At Montana Larry has "his guys" around him, he's "weeded out" the guys he didn't want and has the team he likes. Going to Pepperdine would be like hitting the reset button, he'd have to start building all over, give that another 2 years.
- Which brings me to my next point. In the sense of "moving up" look at the two good (not best) case scenarios. If Larry stays at the UM in the next two years and things get better the Griz will be a sweet 16 team, and Larry could probably take his pick between almost any Big 12, Pac 10 or Big 10 teams. If Larry has to go start all over at Pepperdine, they'll either be in the NCAAs as a 14, 15 or 16 and possibly losing in the 1st round or winning just 1 game. Where is that going to get him? He'll be able to move up again, for sure but he'll have to do more rebuilding and get set back another few years.
- Pepperdine is in a better conference, the West Coast, but they'll have to all but hope for an at-large big if Gonzaga stays as good as they have been. They went 7-20 this year, last at 3-11 in the conference. Gonzaga beat them 102-73 and thne 81-71.
To me, this team looks like they'll be tougher to rebuild (completley unprofessional opinion of course) and so can Larry wait 3 - 4 years with another mid-major to get that next good job offer. I would think even 1 more year with Montana Larry will have solid Pac-10 chances.
-----of course-----
There are positives to make the move as well;
- Beautiful area, still on the western side of the US, recruiting won't lag off too much.
- Pay, of course, and a longer contract
- Pepperdine (at least I don't think) has a football program so the bball team would hold the sole position of the "spotlight" team.
- The team is pretty young, if the right tools are there then Larry will have most of the current team for at least 2 years.
- The Big Sky will probably not have an auto-bid for the NCAAs in a long while, if Pepperdine goes (for example) 24 - 6 and loses to Gonzaga in the conf championship, they're in, if Montana did that, they're going the NIT.
I'd hate to see Larry go, I honestly think this time next year he could be coaching in one of the "major" conferences.
