Two USC grad students murdered near USC campus last month, as they sat in their car.

Yeah...that was a really bad situation, but, unfortunately, not terribly surprising. Though there's been a gentrification movement in the area over the past 10 years or so, USC is in a terrible neighborhood. Lots of gang activity.

UM and really the city of Missoula look like shi& in all of this. Clean house from the top down. Hell maybe we should just forfeit the season at this point. That would be server punishment for the football team. Those inocent would still be punished. It would surely make EVERYONE on that team accountable. Yes it would be a devastating blow but it already has been to the inocent in all of this but this all needs to stop.

At this stage Engstrom and Foley need to go. Start a national search for a new School Pres and Vice Pres that do NOT have ties to Montana! I think no ties to the start are key in this.. Those two new heads start a national search for an new AD again with no ties to Montana. UM needs new progressive thinking and people not influenced by past UM heads like king George, whom also owns into this mess.

Hell at this point even if we forfeit the season and clean house this will have an impact for years to come on UM and Missoula. I mean people still think make references to "Thug U" which is a reference to what took place at the University of Miami decades ago! Sadly people easily can forget years and years of good because of one bad! The negatives last longer than the positives!

Why stop at this? Why not move the university out of state, like to Oregon or USC (where they have no problems, ha-ha), and close Missoula. If there were no university in Missoula, and no Missoula, there would no sexual assaults--and no bad press--in Missoula.

Why aren't the feds and US Attorneys office putting resources into places where their help is really needed, like trying to do something about the very high rate of rape on Indian reservations. See quotes from this NY Times article today.

"She was 19, a young Alaska Native woman in this icebound fishing village of 800 in the Yukon River delta, when an intruder broke into her home and raped her. The man left. Shaking, the woman called the tribal police, a force of three. It was late at night. No one answered. She left a message on the department’s voice mail system. Her call was never returned. She was left to recover on her own."

"One in three American Indian women have been raped or have experienced an attempted rape, according to the Justice Department."

"But according a survey by the Alaska Federation of Natives, the rate of sexual violence in rural villages like Emmonak is as much as 12 times the national rate."

I spoke with someone at UM about this today and was told GSA Membership is at record levels, season ticket sales were ahead of last year. Soooo, how exactly is the sky falling? At the end of the day, the "investigation" may find some issues, but I don't believe Grizzly Athletics is where the issues are going to be found. I would be more concerned if I was Engstrom, Couture, and maybe the new Commissioner of Higher Ed as he seems to have been direclty quoted about something that is not true at all. Personally I welcome the damn thing because if you have nothing to hide, in the end you should be vindicated. If they uncover some misdeeds, then deal with them and those respponsible. :twocents:
This! I hope that Engstrom didn't ditch Pflugrad and O'Day as an act of misdirection but at this point it might have to be considered a possibility. If the Athletic department can successfully be made the scapegoat then you might save your own ass. In the end, having the Feds stick their nose in the might be the best thing for the football team since Engstrom certainly has no motivation to find blame anywhere else. Regardless of the outcome, I sure hope the truth comes out in the end.

The story has some inaccuracies. There are paragraphs on Jimmy Wilson, but no mention of him being drafted or playing for the Dolphins.
how is that an inaccuracy? Omission, perhaps, but definitely not an inaccuracy.

"He [Wilson] pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct last year after he bit a woman. Pflugrad showed reporters photos of the bite mark to try to persuade them that the bite was not that serious."

[Wilson's plea was not last year; it was in 2010. Pflu didn't show reporters any photos.]

Pflu may not have accompanied O'Day, but O'Day did .... http://missoulian.com/news/local/federal-harassment-complaint-filed-against-university-of-montana-football-players/article_c8cb214c-89d2-11e1-b0d4-001a4bcf887a.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

After Wilson was accused, O’Day brought evidence from Wilson’s legal file – including copies of photographs taken in the emergency room of the bite mark on the woman’s leg – to the Missoulian.

He told the Missoulian in November that “the information came from Jimmy and his attorney, just to give their point of view. ... We came to the newspaper to talk to the publisher about situations, and that was in the file. I said there are two sides to every story.”

I have to agree with this, but bet your bottom dollar that competing recruiters have saved the link to send to prospect's parents as we move along.

I'm surprised the New York Times made no mention of the Saudi rapist who UM tipped off before police were notified. That's the absolute worst part about this shit storm. How you skip that and zero in on athletics?
Also, the article implies that UM athletes are given preferential treatment, then notes in passing that the only student charged in any of these alleged assaults is a UM football player. Doesn't sound that preferential to me.

EXACTLY!!! Great post GB1. I gave up 2 of my south endzone seats this year to try to get 2 more tickets near my other 4 which require a GSA membership. I am donating more this year not less and my business will be donating to the facilities uprgrade. I have not been happy with the bad publicity, but I still support the university and the griz. In fact I am glad to shine the light of day on things so I don't have to shrug my shoulders when people ask me what is going on in Missoula.

So, can you admit that the story has inaccuracies? Yup, O'Day had his investigation file with him when he discussed Wilson's situation with the Missoulian. It included photos, which apparently showed the bit was no big deal, that had apparently been provided by Wilson's lawyers. Do you think it's wrong for the university to talk to the press? Don't you think it's a good idea for the AD to do some investigation and gather some information after an athlete has been charged with something?

The Board of Regents who gave their rubber stamp OK to Engstrom's ill-conceived terminations bear their own share of culpability in this mess. They clearly did not vette ol' Royce before giving him the job. The ex-chemistry prof has proven that he is way in over his silver-thatched head - and as far as well as his PR and people skills?..forget it! The BOR will dump him when the time seems right. (Big fish eat
smaller fish. It's R.E.s turn to be the smaller fish) The guy's credibility is 10% lower than the US Senate's. He's about to become a pathetic bookmark in UM's long history of Main Hall occupants.

Since when is a guy biting a girl that does not want to be bitten "no big deal?" It must be alright as long as he didn't break the skin. Of course there were inaccuracies in the story. Use them to gloss over the big picture. Use them to distract yourself from the problems if it helps you sleep at night.

The NY Times picture is great.

Agree with earlier post about NY Times running out of news or not having better things to do with their college football section.

Why are the feds involved in a matter like this?

One thing I know about being a Griz fan is 99%+ of the fans of other FCS schools wish their school had the "It" factor of the Griz. Every FCS school either fantasizes about or is working to be favorably compared to the Griz.

another great thread. why do i have a feeling that if the NYT had posted this pic along with a story about the wonder that IS washington grizzly stadium and griz football.....that people wouldn't have these views of the paper and what IS and ISN'T news.

my experience is that the good comes with the bad...and you can't have it voth ways. there isn't a person on this board that hasn't bragged numerous times about what an excellent football program you have and how amazing the university of montana is.....yet now some of you want to pretend you're this tiny little no-name university in a sliver of a town in nowhere montana when things aren't great.

good stuff as always. :thumb:
