For what it is worth, this is the explanation I got from Ron Loghry, the assistant commissioner of the BSC on Monday when I emailed him and asked him for an explanation as to why the game was on Monday. The good news is that with the addition of Idaho to the mix next year we should get back to having the game on Saturday next year.
Mark:
The way the current schedule works, when a travel pair plays the lone wolf (SUU), one plays SUU on Thurs, the other on Saturday and then the travel pair plays Monday. It is like this for every travel pair in the Conference (ISU/WSU, UND/UNC, PSU/EWU, SAC/NAU).
If you recall, last year we did make the exception for the UM/MSU game and one team played SUU on Thursday, the UM/MSU game was Saturday and then the other school played SUU on Monday. This was done solely because of the past precedence of a lucrative local television contract mandating the game needing to be on Saturday. However, two things happened: 1.) the local television contract never materialized – and in fact the two schools PAID for the games to be on – and, 2.) the presidents listened to the concerns raised by the SUU president and faculty athletic representative that this caused the SUU men’s and women’s teams to be on the road for seven days, five of which were class days.
Therefore, with the knowledge that this would be the last year with the Lone Wolf schedule (as Idaho joins next year), it was moved that the Conference schedule the UM/MSU travel pair just as all the others in the Conference. Starting next year, the UM/MSU game will once again return to Saturday, and in fact will be the only game that week for both.
I hope the explanation helps.
Ron
