No Longer Rumour?

Player,I agree...averaging 30+ points 6 of 7 years(uh oh ...stats) was terrible...he obviously had no clue how to coordinate offense. As for gray...who here wouldn't take a job for double the salary? Capitalism at its finest!

The offense was a good offense and I think the play calling even got better over the years. FWIW, I predict those loud game day fans that consistently slammed the BH offense game after game will be the first ones to boo next years team (new coaches) when we don't make a few first downs or passes are off target/dropped and are forced into punts. They will be yelling ... WHY DIDN’T YOU GIVE IT TO CHASE! Its their nature to bitch about things they have no control over ... and they will never stop.

I would be willing to bet that Pflu willingly released him from that contract, which was the professional thing to do for an old ally that was doubling his salary. And I would guess Pflu was involved in the discussions. There is no evidence that I have seen that there was acrimony between BH and Pflu.
I agree totally with the first part -- and not just for the money, but to give the "old ally" a chance to be part of a 1A program again.

I'm not quite so sure about him being involved in the discussions, but that's certainly possible. Given that, what do we make of this from the Friday press conference? (Previously posted on the thread moved to the Rumor Mill):

I think that’s about it. [Looks to his left. Inaudible offstage remark.]
Oh yeah … yeah. My man!
[Chuckle] Good. He just called me too. I can feel his ring. [Gestures at his (pocket?).]
Uh. Our defensive line coach … uh ... is Coach Michael Gray. Whom I coached with at the University of Oregon. And uh, he spent seven or eight days just in our staff meetings this year … uh …… with Coach Hauck and Coach Paulson.
And the players absolutely adored this guy. And uh, you know … he couldn’t do things because of N-C-double-A rules, but he could sit there and watch and … and critique our players and talk to our staff about’um. And uh ... players would come by and say "Coach Gray, Coach Gray, How can I get better? How can I get better?"
And … so … we have great players that are thirsty for that knowledge. And I think we’re gonna have great teachers that will allow that to happen.
[Stuff on Gray’s playing career, including CFL.]
Then coached at Weber State for one year. He went to the Los Angeles Rams as a coach. Uh … went … went to Kentucky with Coach Rich Brooks. Coached at Oregon State under Erikson and Coach Riley and then came to Oregon and coached there for four years. So … he’s gonna get that D-line going. It’s gonna be fun. And you’ll love his energy and his passion for the game.”
If he (knew about/was involved with) the Gray discussions -- but they were still iffy -- I'd say this was a pretty damn good performance, and about all he could say at that point.

I'll be interested to hear what he has to say when someone asks him about. (And someone will.)

I sure hope that someone is a Kaimin reporter and they ask him the question over and over until it gets Robin PO'd. It would be nice to see how Phlu handles the "heat", such that it is.

Funny, I had a similar passing thought when I wrote that. Anyone (like Pflu) who can handle the Gray situation as well as he did at the Friday press conference isn't likely to have trouble with the Kaiman. (I can't help but have a sneaking suspicion that Coach was not going to mention Gray at all until that helpful? fellow from off-camera bought it up.)

I was suggesting he was involved in the discussion concurrent with the press conference. It's possible they were not resolved at the time of the press conference.

I posted this in the "Rumor Forum":

Re: Las Vegas paper says Michael Gray to coach at UNLV
by Griz 'n » Wed Jan 13, 2010 3:55 pm

FWIW, it was on KECI last night that Gray verbally accepted the job, had not yet signed a contract with Montana, he was in Missoula on Saturday, but was only here for a couple of hours before receiving a phone call from Bobby and accepting the UNLV job. It was also noted that, ironically it was Pflu that introduced Bobby and Gray.

That was according to Jake Ziven who spoke with O'Day about the issue.

My thought exactly. And then he was fast enough on his feet to deal more-or-less extemporaneously with what could have been an awkward situation.

As for Gray going I suppose he can't be faulted for wanting more money although as I said earlier on this thread I would have a hard time raising my family in Vegas.

I have always believed in business that if someone doesn't want to work for you then let em go! I would prefer to have a coach who wants to be a Griz. The fact Pflu applied 3X for the job makes me think he really wants not only to be a HC but a HC in Montana for the Griz! Speaks volumes to me.

On an aside. How is Gray deciding to bail on the Griz any different than a kid who gives a verbal to a university and then changes his mind and decides to sign with another school on signing day.
Just a thought. Coaches slam kids when they do this. Even in the press. I guess the lesson for some coaches is "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"

How is it different? That is easy, Gray signed and the kid didn't. Verbals are non binding and contracts are binding, unless someone decides not to pus it, which is what UM did. I agree with the "who wants someone who doesn't want to be there" thought though.

As mentioned in a previous post - and according to O'Day, Gray did not sign a contract. He was in Missoula over the weekend and had verbally accepted but hadn't put his signature on the contract before he bailed.

And the "helpful" fellow off camera at the press conference who mentioned discussing the defensive line coach when Pflu had overlooked the position was O'Day.

The Grays will do that to you. They will also abduct you in your sleep and mutilate your cattle.

Gray didn't sign. He gave a verbal. The same as kids who give verbals and change their minds.

Hauck doesn't bleed maroon, he doesn't bleed. This guy is a piece of Sh*t. He goes after Pflugrads coaches, he goes after our recruits knowing full well what he's doing. GB1 you can call it competetive but it's not it's being lazy and stealing other peoples hard work. Granted Gray isn't without fault in this either. I can't help it. I hate Hauck. I didn't like him before but I hate him now. What a soulless piece of garbage. I would like to wish nothing but bad for him but he has a couple of decent guys that followed him so I won't do that.

So what does this make you? Have you heard yourself? Sounds Alphaesque.

Angry much? I'm not sure how it's stealing other people's hard work.. he was the one recruiting the guys here at MT before he went to UNLV. This is college athletics, it happens. I would have been surprised if Bobby wasn't trying to recruits kids at UNLV that he wasn't currently in the process of recruiting. Gray left for more money, Bobby might have poached him, but at the same time, what does that say about Gray's loyalty to Pflugrad? Put yourself in Gray's shoes.. would you go to a job making $30-40K and say yes, but then you get offered a job for $100k, and then you go to the higher paying one? That's just good business. UM lost a coach, big deal, I'd rather see us seal the deal on recruits than a position coach at this point.

I wish you could open up a little and let us know how you really feel. :D

I don't think Hauck really gives a f*#k that you hate him. Hate is a very strong word that you are throwing out there like penny candy. If you hate a football coach because he didn't win the NC for your team then you have some serious mental issues and probably need to be locked up or at least on some medications so that when something serious happens you don't just snap and go off the deep end.

Get a life!!!

wasn't this thread due for a split to the smack forum with the actual football stuff still here? or maybe just move it all together since the guy's a Rebel now? Let's look forward to what the actual griz staff are putting together. Just move on.
