Recruiting UNLV is a little different than UM. If UM gets a 2 star player it's a good get, and a 3 star is unprecedented. An FBS schools like UNLV is not so much about quantity as it is quality. They aren't going to be able to challenge TCU, Utah, BYU, etc, without a handful of talented 3-star players. 2-star players are just the guys that fill out the rest of the list. Thus far UNLV has three 3-star commits, and looks like from rivals/scout that they might have a chance to get one or two more. It's been a pretty status quo class so far for Hauck. Rivals rates UNLV's last 3 classes as 8, 0, and 6 (in terms of # of 3-stars) and scout rates them at 4, 3, 4.
Hauck's recruiting is likely to improve considering he's only been there about 3 weeks, but I don't think he's going to be able to recruit UNLV out of this hole. It's going to take some great game-day coaching by Hauck, Phenecie, and Paulson.
Wow. According to Rivals, BYU has 15 3-stars and 4 4-stars coming in and TCU has 11 3-stars and 3 4-stars coming in and Utah has 12 3-stars and 2 4-stars, SDSU has 16 3-stars and 1 4-star. Some Pac-10 schools would be happy with those classes.
Well, let me argue this: Right now, the BYU's, etc., are in the driver's seat. They have all these starred players, but if BH's record is any proof, BH will develop his 2 & 3 stars into competitors with those schools. He & his staff will get the last drop of talent out of any player, if that player will stick with him. BH is never the satisfied man. It takes a mentally tough player to play for him, and that translates into performance on the field. I would not be surprised if several players leave the program because of him, and that several of his recruits drop out, after they run into what he expects.
UNLV has brought in a team of coaches who know nothing but success, and that success was forged in the years BH & staff had at Montana. He developed no-stars, 1 stars, & maybe a few 2 stars into teams that competed successfully with schools that
may have had 2 stars or maybe a few 3 stars on them. How else do you explain UM's march to the NC game 3 out of the 7 years BH was here? I guess I'm saying you can have players with however many stars; it's what you can or can't do with them.
