Nickel Defense

It sure looked like we brought the nickel package out much more against Weber than anyone else all year. Do you suppose it was just because Weber could not run the ball at all or because Gregorak is moving towards that package a bit more on obvious pass or a bit of both?
Go Griz!

I would bet Gregorak was trying to help improve our 98th ranked Pass Defense by using that package more but seeming that Weber had 27 carries for a total of 6 yards, he was probably concerned about giving up some potential big pass plays that would allow Weber to get back into the game.

Saw the interview with Hermy after South Dakota. When asked why the pass D improved in the second half he replied "we really just simplified our coverages". Best coach I ever met once told me that "you don't need a bunch of exotic coverages to be a good defense, you just need a couple that work".

Or maybe people just woke up to the fact that the team has been playing nickel all season.
They actually play a zone nickle quite a bit. But the nickle doesn't work all the time. Its more of aaaccessory package.

Urban Meyer always says "Football is a very simple game made complicated by stupid men." The stupid men being the coaches.

I laughed so hard watching that I got tears in my eyes. Here is the coach player interaction: Mongo we hand you the ball and you run. You knock down any son of a bitch in your way. Do you understand Mongo? YES MONGO UNDERSTAND.. MONGO RUN WITH BALL.

Most people on this board couldn't tell you where the nickle comes from or what its strength vs negitives are.

I googled Nickle Defense and found nothing? :coffee:

Try American football nickle defense. I found a plethora of top quality info.

You must have googled NICKEL and not NICKLE

You're correct. I told you I'm not too smart!

At risk of looking like a fool, the nickel defense is the implementation of 5 defensive backs typically with the reduction of 1 LIne-backer. This can be used when the offense is in more obvious passing situations and goes with 4 or 5 wide receivers.
Going with a nickel defense, matches up better pass defenders against the wide receiver sets the offense brings.
Staying with a base 4-3 defense against a 5 wide-out set asks a JP Kannagota to cover an EWU wide receiver downfield like we saw this year.
The weakness of going nickel defense is against a run play, screen pass, or draw play.
I'm sure I've missed something........
Go Griz!

Your pretty much the money. Another major flaw of nickel is that its hard to blitz out of. Keeping a team honest is hard to do up the middle. It works wonders vs the zone read and quick spread passes. The other major downfall is if your d line doesn't get pressure on the QB. Your often asking Tripp or jp or Brock to cover a WR or RB for more than a quick route is a bad idea. Hence why you see zone out of the nickel. Hoping that you can cover the quick routes and then dump the reciever off to a cb or saftey who often is coming up to make a play. Advantage is you get to play another cb or saftey. You can cover the edges easier and have more speed on the field. I believe its where the 3-3-5 started as well. Usually the nickel gives up some shorter crossing routes and up the middle runs. However usually holds down the deep threat. If you notice the griz play a ton more nickel vs ewu, weebs and other spread teams. I doubt we will see it as much this week with kirk being a danger up the middle. We will see more blitz of the a gap and my favorite blitz with and a and c gap from two outside linebackers.
