Next Year

The biggest problem for the griz next year won't be their offensive line.

The biggest issue will be replacing JJ and who will be the coach? Add on that the griz play 3 probable top 10 teams and it should make for an interesting year.

And we're the only team that does that on a consistent basis.

You didn't ask any questions Skippy.

Next years team will be well built around whoever our next starting QB is. The o line will have more experience and return our best player. Running back will have fresh faces but is loaded with potential.

What I would project of offense

T: Dietrich
G: Todd
C: Luke
G: Weyer
T: Schmaing
WR: Henderson / Burke
WR: Jones / Rogers
WR: Naccarato / Jannssen
TE: Ralston
RB: Nguyen / Favors / Logwood / Counts
QB: Gustafson or Simis

Honestly, that's a pretty damn good offense on paper. You've got great skill players to help the new QB along and a stable of running backs again. Also look at the o line, it would be back to the size and strength we're used to seeing. That group would average about 20-25 pounds heavier than this years O line.

On defense there's a few more gaps though;

DE: Crittenden
DT: Kidder
DT: Peevey
DE: Holmes
OLB: Gamboa
MLB: Kose
OLB: Van Ackeren
CB: Nelson
S: Whitted
S: Dallassera or Johnson
CB: Harris

A few more gaps on defense, replacing Wags and Takai will be tough but fortunately it's with guys that have played a ton this season. Dennard graduates and Nelson will step in nicely. Safety where Hermey leaves is a bit of an unknown, roll over Dallassera or elevate special teams stand out Johnson?

Overall, again, there's key losses but a lot of core players return, including the full 2-deep of LBs and really only safety would be the spot where you may break in a player with very limited prior on-field experience.

Honestly I don't see much reason to suggest that 2015 will be a rebuilding year at all.

You really think Counts will be 4th string? Id have him as the starter. I think he's the best overall rb especially if we still have the same offense next year.

Look through your list again. How many impact players are there from this year's team? Outside of Schmaing, are there any others who will even make the honorable mention team this season (of course, Schmaing was all-Big Sky last year, just trying to save the hacks from correcting me)? There has never been a season in recent memory in which we will have fewer returning All-conference (1st or 2nd team) players. So your hoping they develop, right, as the basis for your prediction? There is no history to prove that they will. I see the first re-building year in many many years.

Funny thing about college football...teams lose players every year and have to replace them with younger kids. Nothing earth shattering, but teams seem to do it successfully every year.

I understand that, it's football 101. But name a year in which we did not have at least 3-4 1st or 2nd team All-Big players returning? That's my point. You have to return a strong base of solid players, and fill in other posts with younger unproven kids. Where is our base on offense? Jones, and Schmaing if he returns is it. yeah, we will return quite a few on defense, but how many of them are All-Conference caliber like in normal seasons? Maybe a couple of the D-linemen will be that good. I don't see any of the three returning LBs being that caliber. If the coaches get smart and start Schye, you will be looking at one though.

I would bet that from that list of 10 returning players at least 6 are HM or better at the end of this season (of course, Schmaing and Henderson won't be HM, but I think even YOU would agree they would be had they played, so YES, I'm counting those two).

I'd like to see Gamboa at safety. I heard he is one of the fastest people on the team and I believe it. His size fits better at safety too.

Kidder & Holmes are the only two on defense good enough. Our LBs are highly overrated, as you will see the rest of this season when we play some quality opponents. As for Whitted and Harris, please!

OK....I won't say "I told you so" when 4 of those 8 make HM or better at season's end.

I would love to be wrong on these players. But I don't think I will be.

One thing about our LBs that I keep seeing each week, and even Tripp, coyle, and JP did it way too often last year, is that they frequently don't play their gaps on running plays, allowing opposing RBs to simply cut back into their vacated gap for big gains. This is a coaching thing in reality, but Ty seems to tolerate it way to much to suit me. Kose is really bad about doing it this season.

Define "overrated". All three LB's are in the top 20 in the conference in tackles. Only TWO of those ahead of Gamboa (he's #20) have more sacks.

LBs almost always lead the conference in tackles. They are out of position too much, and give up too many big plays, and two of the three don't tackle particularly well, There are no Coyle's or Tripp"s among that group.

With the teams coming up, there are going to be more chances for tackles. #6 is going to have some numbers put up against some of these defenses also. Weyer is getting some good press too, so he might make HM, but I'm guessing he is a year away still.
