Next Fall's New-Look Team

I hear Vidlak throws a nice ball and the Hawaii lb transfer will help.

He better be able to because if we’re planning on Brown being our starter we better be ok with finishing middle to bottom of the conference.

Brown could be improved. Also, there are many other drop down QB’s out there. Is the Oregon St QB signed yet?

Fortune favors the bold, luck favors the prepared. Kind of explains much of the 2022 season.

If the strategy is do the same thing as last season, focus all the resources on getting the transfer ready and hoping for the best, welcome to another kick in the nuts. No one seriously expects that there be five or six guys, each one coached up and ready to go when called upon. But given it's the most important position on the field, by a lot, is it unrealistic to hope for two, a starter and a competent backup? Hopefully guys who have similar skillsets, so there can be offensive consistency and that each get enough reps in practice so that they know the plan, and can execute it. What a luxury to be able to trust in a situation so much so that you don't have to rely on trotting out an injured player to execute flawlessly in the biggest games.

Hope springs eternal, in spring time. Fortune favors the bold, and luck favors the prepared in the real world.

So.... speaking of "new-look team", I guess the better go find a new punter.

This kid says he can punt. Maybe his dad will coach him up.

Coast-to-coast: Montana Grizzlies receive commitment from New Jersey kicker Brayton Boyer

Brayton Boyer will arrive in Montana this summer after falling in love with the UM campus during his January visit.

MISSOULA – Brayton Boyer remembers the first time he was truly exposed to the Montana Grizzlies’ rich football tradition.

Originally from Utah — Kaysville to be exact — the kicker now living in Madison, New Jersey was always familiar with the program. It just wasn’t until 2021 when UM traveled to nationally ranked Washington and knocked the Huskies off on their own turf that he realized how relevant they were becoming.

“I just remember them being really, really good,” Boyer said. “Coach Hauck building a program of dominance, really.”

So as his senior season concluded on the East Coast, the Griz remained on Boyer’s mind. He sent his film out west and UM head coach Bobby Hauck ended up with the clips.

Hauck knew the last name well. He and Brant Boyer, Brayton’s dad, built a relationship over the years by crossing paths through the world of football.

Brant, currently the New York Jets special teams coordinator, had a 10-year playing career in the NFL, where he matched up on occasion with Bobby’s brother, Tim. Indirectly, the two connected, so when Brayton wanted to visit UM in late January, his family knew exactly who to consult.

“Coach Hauck gave us a tour around the campus …. It was actually the first day that everybody was back on campus, it was snowing a little bit, it was awesome,” Brayton said. “I just loved the campus, all the facilities and you could just tell that Montana has a great tradition of winning in its football program … I left there knowing I wanted to go there. Everything about it was awesome.”

He chose to commit to the Grizzlies on Saturday evening via his personal Twitter account.

“What makes the town awesome is that you can tell they feed off of Montana sports and everything revolves around the University of Montana athletics and the college,” Brayton said. “Everyone is invested in it and that’s a program that I think everybody would want to play for. People coming (to town) on Saturdays or even for other sports, there’s always going to be lots of people there supporting you. It’s a no-brainer in my opinion.”

The commitment comes over a handful of DII and DIII schools that were expressing interest in the high school quarterback and kicker.

Yes, Montana’s newest boot was his team’s starting signal-caller this past season, leading the Dodgers to a 6-3 mark. But it was his leg that garnered the most recognition as a first team all-state honoree.

Brayton was 7 of 10 on field goal attempts this season with an in-game long of 48 yards. In a midseason game against West Morris Mendham, he knocked through two fourth-quarter field goals to propel his team to a 6-0 triumph.

As for point-after attempts, the 6-foot, 180-pound right-legger split the uprights on 19 of his 20 tries.

“I think a great kicker is reliable and not afraid. They’re confident no matter what and they feel like they can make any kick,” Brayton said. “I’m coming in just to do my job and whatever the coaches need me to do, I’ll do. I’m going to bust my butt to help this team win and add onto this great tradition.”

Brayton says he can handle responsibilities for kickoffs, field goals, extra points and even punting.

His abilities will give Montana options in the special teams room that recently announced the return of seventh-year senior Nico Ramos after being granted waivers from the NCAA.

I didn't get that impression from the article. The way I interpreted it was that the NJ player was on Bobby's radar due to his connection with Tim, not that Tim is on the staff. :?:

Nice positive summary. Can't wait to know what the changes are. However, why try limiting this to just positive posts?

With all the OL returning and added OL depth, a deep rb stable, and coaching changes, it looks like Hauck is going to return to emphasizing the running game. Yet, the passing game will be used against opponents with stronger run defense or bad pass defense. At least it makes sense to me.
To me, this season is a prove it or hit the road scenario for Germer. Seriously, with the experience and additional depth, shouldn't this be a high performing OL?

Offense will depend on improved play calling, player utilization, and reliable qb play.

Defensively, scheme changes have to be more versatile. We need personnel and schemes, that can keep dominant run teams from dominating.

I love our LB depth. I like the potential of our DL. How quickly can the inexperienced players adjust to more prominent roles? To me, if Ramos quickly adjusts this DL very well could quickly be a huge factor. Ironic, that goes hand in hand with improving our run defense.

Onto secondary play, again another group with plenty of players. How talented are they, and who steps up? I feel our safeties should be better against the pass. My biggest concern is at cb. Do we truly have a true 1? Walker, Whitehead, Gardner are likely early favorites. My personal dark horses are Dylan Simmons and Elijah Brady.

Last fall, the few practices I attended, Simmons was always staying with WRs, in good playmaking position, and kind of stood out. Unfortunately for him, CBs ahead of him were terrific. As for Brady, a few guys familiar with him feel he has Tru and Ford type potential. The only question is, how quickly can he adjust to this level? He certainly won't back down from the competition.

In a nutshell, our defensive success hinges on Ramos or another DT darkhorse emerging and finding 3 quality CBs.
I'm leaning towards these keys happening. Fortunately, the schedule is favorable to making these transitions positive.

I didn't try to limit to only positive posts. I suggested "extra negative" comments go elsewhere. In my view, extra negative comments don't contribute to the discussion. They are driven by narratives, trolls and some Cats. They are usually not made in good faith. They goof up the discussion.

Most would say that people with your narrative leads to 6th place finishes.
