Next coach.

No matter who it is, they need to heavily prioritize recruiting and the use of the portal to fill roster holes. Good coaching and development is obviously a requirement, but that is a hell of a lot easier with the right personnel. Find and play the best player, regardless of where they come from.

I was reading the debates about whether the Griz would be likely to land a P-5 Coordinator and got curious about where previous UM coach hires had come from, so I looked it up. I'm just posting it here in case anyone else needs a refresher.

-Bobby Hauck: MW ST Coordinator
-Bob Stitt: D-II Head Coach
-Mick Delaney: FCS Position Coach, Internal Hire
-Robin Pflugrad: Jr. College Head Coach
-Bobby Hauck: PAC12 Position Coach/ST Coordinator
-Joe Glenn: D-II Head Coach
-Mick Dennehy: FCS Coordinator, Internal Hire
-Don Read: FCS Head Coach

Just a small correction, but Pflugrad was Assistant Head Coach and WR coach at UM the year before he was hired. Also, IIRC, Portland State was a D2 team when Read was hired.

Kind of have to throw out alot of this type of stuff because position coaches and especially coordinators make so much more money now. Most position coaches on P5 staffs make as much and in a lot of cases more than Hauck.

Good catch. I looked at the wrong section of Pflugrad's coaching history. That actually makes a lot more sense.

Choate makes 625,000 and goes up to 675,000 in 2025.

Yes, Texas is $ loaded, but I don't think FBS position coaches are the right bucket to look in...

FCS Coordinators or select position coaches from winning programs is the sweet spot IMO.

I tend to agree. And FCS coordinator or a G5 position coach from a team that has overachieved and recruited really well. Outside possibility of a P5 position coach at smaller schools like Wazzu, Cal, Oregon state, etc.

With both OSU and Wazzu about to face some serious budget cuts to their athletic departments there is a good chance we could snag someone we'd never have hope of getting before. The timing works out weirdly perfectly as well, Bobby's Contract is up in January and it will be the PAC 2 in June of 24

Wishful thinking. I think OSU and Wazzu will have several years before they are in such dire financial position that it will cause issues with football staffing.

Unless the team loses all of the remaining games, it may take us that long to get rid of Bobby.

A Guy like Mack Leftwich, Texas State Offensive Coordinator makes a lot of sense. Was the QB coach at Incarnate Word for 4 seasons, then the OC there last season (had the #1 D-1 offense), and now the OC at Texas State. This season they are averaging 273 yard a game through the air and 212 on the ground, as well as 42 points per game. He's young (28) and played high school Quarterback in Texas and Pennsylvania (Penn player of the year as a senior). Played college QB at UTEP and started several games for them until an injury ultimately forced him to medically retire. Worth mentioning too that his dad, Spencer, has been a college coach for over 25 years and is currently the assistant head coach/O-line coach at UTEP. Would be great to have inroads in Texas. His salary at Texas State, although I can't seem to locate in on a quick search, is likely small enough that an FCS head coaching job would be pretty enticing (head coach only makes 800K). He has also played recently enough that he understands the state of the game and recruiting from the perspective of a player better that most old farts are going to.

It would land on deaf ears. Guys is a joke of an AD, and should have never gotten the job in the first place. Another example of the in-house good ole boys hire. If Bobby goes, I think Haslam should go right along with him. Can't recall a good thing he has done since he's been AD.

Leftwich is someone who would resonate more with Bodnar, a young guy himself who had an impressive resume coming into Montana. There would be mutual respect there.

In any case, I think if there is going to be a change made, there needs to be a national search done by an outside search firm so you don't have the usual bunch of old fart boosters meddling in something they aren't remotely qualified to meddle in. That's how we got into this mess in the first place. Just because you write big checks doesn't mean you know who is going to be a successful football coach, and surely should not get you a vote on who the coach should be.
