Hard to tell at this point. Good experience at Montana but they are winless at Mary this year and he’s clearly rebuilding the program. Part of the hauck tree.

As far as Roper he might have done that and if he did it’s hard to tell if that was his move or his agent. He has his time at Montana listed on his coaching bio now.

I could see Samson being beneficial in Montana recruiting, but it seems like a big step to come here as HC, maybe as a coordinator or position coach. His history in Northwest Montana and his recruiting chops at Tech so far is appealing. Pflugrad will likely tell us to pound sand, and I'm not sure that this one game tells us anything about him, but we know his pedigree.

Roper seems like the proven commodity. He has Montana ties, knows the program and the Northwest as well as the Northeast/Southeast now. He has had success at Holy Cross as an OC and is currently having success at Furman. Seems inevitable he ends up as an FCS HC somewhere. Why not here? Seems like the best choice.

FBS coordinators seem like more than a stretch unless we pony up $$$.

As far as Mountain West coordinators, I don't think people will like this idea, but Kane Ioane out of Boise State, given his coaching experience at MSU through Ash and Choate, his experience in the BSC as both a player and coach, and his roots in Eastern Montana makes a lot of sense from many different standpoints.

Wasn’t it Roper who burned a lot of bridges on his way out? Like he completely whitewashed his bio of anything Montana? Went to the pro-day wearing Oregon gear or something like that? I could be mistaking him for someone else but I seem to remember something like that…

Why what happened for him to do that?

A few young offensive minds with GRIZ ties are doing well at their current jobs.

Kyle Samson, Aaron Pflugrad, and Justin Roper come to mind. These guys will be d1 head coaches at some point. Too bad we missed on these guys as OCs.

Should we gamble on 1 of them? Would Annese actually consider Montana? Would Andy Thompson be willing to come home? Does Akem pursue coaching whenever his pro career is over. I'd love to groom him to be an OC. That boy's charisma would do well in recruiting.

I'd love to find guys with Midwest, Southeast, and TX ties.

Anyway, without researching, these are names off the top of my head.

Make fun of Roper the qb as you like, the guy seems to do great as an OC.

That's part of the problem. We don't know how good or bad much of the staff is. We don't get to know these guys much.

I don’t think it’s a talent issue at all. I think they’re being misused on both sides of the ball. Schematically they’re not being put in positions to succeed

..Aaron Plugard would make a great coach..young and has pedigree...UM trashed his father

was a great coach and would have taken the Griz to NC....Stitt career was trashed also...who

Maybe Zach Lujan is too green to jump into a HC position, but watching his offense last year was incredible. He'd probably be my first choice.

I don’t see Montana going after someone at the FCS level that’s never been a coordinator, a D2 head coach, or a young G5 position coach. I also can’t think of any current FCS HC that we would both be interested in and would be interested in us.

I don’t see any P5 coordinators taking this job. And I think it’s unrealistic to think P5 position coaches that likely have kids etc would take such a significant pay decrease to take this job. If the next stop we’re to occur, I think those are your starting parameters if you’re doing a base line search for our next HC. (Obviously there are outliers).

With this being said there is a long list of qualified candidates that would be interested in this job within those parameters. Realistically, in my opinion, you’re looking at younger P5 position coaches, or G5 coordinators. If you look at FCS coordinators you’re really looking at Roper, someone from SDSU or someone from NDSU. Would be curious to have discussions on this.
