New KPAX TV Announcers for Griz

"Many" might be an understatement. 🤔
I typically scan through several games on Saturday before the Griz hit the air and again when the game is over. One of the worst is NAU, they still use their radio play-by-play guy to simulcast on ESPN plus for all home games. You want to throw things at the TV when that homer gets rolling. 🍎🥥🧱🏈 CAA, SoCon, Southland, UAC, even the MVFC games aren't always that great either. You don't even want to know about the NEC, Patriot, Pioneer and most Ivy League games. :poop:
That's why this is such an upgrade at first glance though because it will potentially be better than a lot more of the games on the Fox and CBS sports networks covering many of the lower ranked FBS teams.
I would say that our guys who everyone is bashing on here aren't that bad if ESPN+ uses them for every game but Bozeman. For that one, we really need to get the kitty 🐱 doing the play-by-play out of that booth. Along with their analyst, I'm tired of them teaming up on Marty or Grady as the sole Griz representative.
NAU's Mitch Strohman is actually pretty good to listen to. When the Griz have had to go down to NAU and play in the Walkup and Mitch was on TV, I always felt he did a pretty good job, and never felt like he was being too "homer-ish". Sure, maybe a little as is expected, but he does a good job of bringing balance.

If you use your Teams Play-by-Play guy as both your Radio and TV guy (as all but 1 school does for Basketball) they will be biased. The radio guy is suppose to be the "Voice of the (Fill in team name)". The TV guys are suppose to call the game like they just flew in, and have no rooting interest in either team. UM and MSU may be the only 2 teams that have their own TV broadcast voices for Football games. You also call a game very different on Radio than you do on TV. On radio you want every movement, every line-up (how far back is the QB, what side is the RB on if there is one, is there motion from a player). On TV, you are already seeing all those things, so you don't need to say them all.

I will add, that it is also very hard to go from calling games on radio, to calling games on TV (Trust me). I catch myself all the time over explaining plays. I re-watch/Listen to every one of my games at least 8 times. I come away with about 3 pages of notes on things I hate about myself, and the broadcast. Some are just "Need to be quicker on wind-downs" or "Pretty sure I have pizza grease on my tie" to "I said ________ 6 times after made shots, need to cut it to 2 at most" or "Needs more Away player stats about inside paint minutes and points"...

Please don’t hate yourself🥰.

Which is why you are an exceptional play-by-play guy or are on the road to being PbP greatness. BTW, Paul Allen, the radio Voice of the Vikings went from calling horse racing to doing PbP for football. He is a true homer and lives and dies with the team's performance every week. With the way he calls games, I would say he is the "Voice of the Minnesota Vikings fans".

Love Mitch. He does an excellent job.

Me too. And it's very clear that he really respects the UM program and the passion of GRIZ fans.

I'll be honest, I was hoping he'd be interested in the VOTG job after Mick retired. As it stands, I wouldn't trade Riley for him, but I still love listening to him. And to be perfectly frank, he's just far too good to be at a place like NAU for as long as he has. Admittedly it's a great place to live, which i'm sure is why he stayed, but he deserves a fanbase who's fully bought in.

People, we too often forget how fortunate we are at UM and MSU.

For a straight news guy, he was surprisingly bad at getting the correct player identified during his play by play.
And didn't seem to understand football! Granted, many pbp guys can't differentiate between a slant route, a swing route, and a screen. However they should have enough skill to be able to describe what's happening on the field at least generally and get the personnel right, and then defer to the analyst for the details. Jay struggled with even that much, bless his heart...

I knew Trey would be good but I am pleasantly surprised at how good Tripp is right out of the gate. Hope he makes a career out of it.
I think he’s doing very well for a first time. Still some struggles over himself…because I’m sure his brain is processing football so quickly he stumbles words. That’ll come with time. Definitely a solid B early on.

Both have an annoying voice they are horrible to listen to. Also somebody that know Tripp tell him he doesn't need to speak all the time. Most people appreciate dead air instead of know it all commentators. We don't need to be told about the game every second we are not stupid

Are Griz announcers also speaking for the opposing teams TV feed? Although I hate over the top Homers, and it is okay to point out special plays or players on the opposing team. I thought I was going to turn the sound off if Tripp touted the NDU QB anymore. You would have thought he was the next Dave Dickenson. I thought for every good play he had a bad one.

You better turn off the sound and listen to Riley. These are the guys calling the games we will have except Idaho, Sac State and the Brawl. They are the ones who are on ESPN plus, there aren't home and away TV crews.
Why aren't there more complaints about the camera coverage. This last game was horrible, the wide-angle shot was so far back you needed binoculars to see the action. There were way too many instances where the wrong camera was picked up and we were off the play all together, unacceptable.
We had the interview with McElmurry that played over when Montana had the ball on a three and out drive and then they had the commish over for a full three course lunch. Talk about Tripp (and I don't think he talks too much) I thought this guy would never stop patting himself on the back and shut up.
They had another interview on that interrupted game coverage for the first game during as well, my god, the halftime for Scripps is horrible, put the interviews on then!
Don't tell me these guys aren't an upgrade over last year. If I had to trade out Marty to get rid of Jay, it was worth it. Just fix the guys behind the camera and in the truck that are running all this stuff when football is on.

This is the most Montana thread i've read in a minute :ROFLMAO:
i have been to miles city, and had a student in the lab from their once. funny guy. the ladies loved him.

is that 'montana' enough to get into the club? or do i need to go on some tangent, and change the subject while sticking with the subject, so to speak? maybe talk about somewhere other than miles city.
