Okay, as a long time fan of the college game, and a believer that the college game is one of the few bastions of pure basketball left, my disdain for the pro game has reached new levels.
I have watched more NBA playoffs this year than in the last 15 because the celtics are involved, but I cannot tell you how much the unwritten rules of officiating are going to kill the pro game.
A foul is a foul no matter when it occurs. We all know the NBA uses the word 'foul' liberally when it comes to the officiating of games. Down low, you might be able to shank a guy and get away with and we all know about the Jordan rules.
This idea the last two minutes of a game is officiated differently than the other 46 minutes is complete and total bull. I am sorry if a guy makes a perfectly good head fake, and get a guy to tackle him there is no reason that a guy should get away with it. But obviously players, coaches, and officials have been convinced that nothing should be called.
My personal philosophy is if you want to see teams scoring 100 plus a game, make teams pay for fouls. If you are allowed as it is in the nba right now to hack, push and pull all you want for 48 minutes, of course you are going to have 78-72 finals. If teams can't play without their dang hands, then call fouls. I could give a crap if teams spend 90% of the time at the free throw lines. If you want to keep your stars on the floor, tell them to play defense without pushing grabbing and pulling. Oh but that takes the excitement out of games one might argue, you know what is sick watching the Celtics-Pistons series and watch both teams make a mockery out of good offensive basketball.
NBA isn't basketball by the way, it is a medium for star basketball players with immense tallents to show off. But don't ever be convinced that the game you watch on TNT or ESPN is basketball. If it were you would see offensive sets, equal officiating, and solid defense without the use of hands.
I am sick of hearing how the NBA game is different, it is because the NBA made it that way with its selective enforcement of rules on the floor. If there was an attempt to just call the rules as it was stated in the rule book, I gotta think the players and coaches would make the adjustment.
I want the NBA to be good basketball, team basketball, it won't be as long as there is selective enforcement of rules based upon who you are or where you are from.
I just needed to get this off of my chest, as while I love watching the celtics play it makes me sick that people think that the NBA is good basketball...
I had to rant because it just sickens to me to see what will be called and won't. Moreover appologists have to make excuses the whole broadcast about how this or that should or shouldn't be called. Rules are rules, blow the whistle when there is a travel, a foul, but for petes sake,
