NBA "Officiating"

RANT BELOW:

Okay, as a long time fan of the college game, and a believer that the college game is one of the few bastions of pure basketball left, my disdain for the pro game has reached new levels.

I have watched more NBA playoffs this year than in the last 15 because the celtics are involved, but I cannot tell you how much the unwritten rules of officiating are going to kill the pro game.

A foul is a foul no matter when it occurs. We all know the NBA uses the word 'foul' liberally when it comes to the officiating of games. Down low, you might be able to shank a guy and get away with and we all know about the Jordan rules.

This idea the last two minutes of a game is officiated differently than the other 46 minutes is complete and total bull. I am sorry if a guy makes a perfectly good head fake, and get a guy to tackle him there is no reason that a guy should get away with it. But obviously players, coaches, and officials have been convinced that nothing should be called.

My personal philosophy is if you want to see teams scoring 100 plus a game, make teams pay for fouls. If you are allowed as it is in the nba right now to hack, push and pull all you want for 48 minutes, of course you are going to have 78-72 finals. If teams can't play without their dang hands, then call fouls. I could give a crap if teams spend 90% of the time at the free throw lines. If you want to keep your stars on the floor, tell them to play defense without pushing grabbing and pulling. Oh but that takes the excitement out of games one might argue, you know what is sick watching the Celtics-Pistons series and watch both teams make a mockery out of good offensive basketball.

NBA isn't basketball by the way, it is a medium for star basketball players with immense tallents to show off. But don't ever be convinced that the game you watch on TNT or ESPN is basketball. If it were you would see offensive sets, equal officiating, and solid defense without the use of hands.

I am sick of hearing how the NBA game is different, it is because the NBA made it that way with its selective enforcement of rules on the floor. If there was an attempt to just call the rules as it was stated in the rule book, I gotta think the players and coaches would make the adjustment.

I want the NBA to be good basketball, team basketball, it won't be as long as there is selective enforcement of rules based upon who you are or where you are from.

I just needed to get this off of my chest, as while I love watching the celtics play it makes me sick that people think that the NBA is good basketball...

I had to rant because it just sickens to me to see what will be called and won't. Moreover appologists have to make excuses the whole broadcast about how this or that should or shouldn't be called. Rules are rules, blow the whistle when there is a travel, a foul, but for petes sake,

The No Rules League is a joke.

Traveling - OK
Fouls - OK
Palming - OK
3 Seconds- OK
Hand Checking - OK
Goal Tending - OK

There are no clear rules violations anymore. It is all just a subjective opinion by the ref.

I know some people really like it. And I am not one that thinks that basketball should be a non-contact sport. I just don't think it is any fun to watch anymore.

Totally agree. The C's/Pistons game was a glaring example of how bad the officiating in the NBA has become.

Of course, so was the blatant foul on Brent Barry in the Lakers/Spurs final minute...no call-

After the gambing/betting on games fiasco, you would think the NBA and David Stern would be on a goodwill tour, promoting how his officials are the best in the world, etc, etc...But, they do nothing.

Honestly, I get so irratated at the NBA appologists. If one wants an answer as to why our NBA players struggle in international competitions, just look at the crap that we put out on the floor for games. No offensive continuity focus on 1v1 breakdowns, no movement, and piss poor defensive work. Beating the crap replaces sliding your feet. If you get beat, tackle the guy.

I am sorry, but this NBA playoff cycle has done more to prove to me why the state of basketball in the U.S. is in questionable hands. There is not an argument as to why the NBA game or its 'rules' makes the game of basketball any better. Might as well call what the NBA is...the basketball equivalent to the WWF. The real game is played at the college and lower levels and no one and i mean no one other than its strongest adherents believe what they are looking at is basketball.

First of all, there should never have been a situation involving Barry and Fisher. The Refs totally blew the preceeding possession in which the shot clock was not reset, even though the ball clearly hit the rim. The Lakers should have had the ball with a full shot clock and the Spurs would have had to foul. I guess Spurs fans just see the game how they want and really are not too concerned with getting it right or this would have been acknowledged. :twocents:

There's no way, in that situation, brent barry gets that call. Parker, Ginobli or Duncan might've gotten 2 shots. Kobe is the only player on the floor who could've possibly gotten 3 shots had they been put in that situation. It is what it is. However, i doubt Kobe would rely on shaky late game officiating and count on a foul.

As for the Spurs Lakers thing, wasn't that the same ref that got suspended last year, for throwing Tim Duncan out of the game for laughing at one of his calls?

What the hell was he even doing reffing that game????????

David Stern said the refs are in a rotation. He went on to say that if a Ref wasn't qualified to work every game, he wasn't qualififed to work any game. I agree. The BSC should get rid of a few themselves.

The precise problem is that Brett Barry didn't get the call because he was brett barry...The guy puts a great move on the guy, a move a star would make and the refs swallow the whistle for no real reason.

That is what makes the NBA so revolting to me. That is why it is a horrid game. THe only reason I seem to want to watch it because my celtics haven't been here to this position since the bird era.

Arbitrary use of rules and otherwise just general incompetance by league official is ruing the game.

This thread is a lost cause because everybody and their mom knows that the league is rigged.

NBA? nah.....

OK, the offensive foul call on Pierce last night officially trumps the bad call not called on Fisher...

Swill,

I think we all know that the NBA is a lost cause and you are right about it being the NBE... In the end swill, for us who do enjoy watching basketball, this thread is here for theraputic purposes, to allow use to navigate the NBA playoff season without having a nervous breakdown.

Boz,

That is the most rediculous call I have ever seen. If anything it was a travel, not a block. Surely not an offensive foul.

We all know the officials should be a part of the game, a necessary and vital element, but they shouldn't be THE element. Only maybe major league baseball does an umpire have so much control over the outcome of the game with 'judgment' calls. But for whatever reason in the NBA there seems to be nothing to stop them from brutalizing the game. MLB took care of a lot of that with the strike zone Q Tec system a few years ago. After Gregg a few years back with livan hernandez, the MLB was on at least one thing fairly proactive.

Wish Stern would stop lying to himself and wake up and smell the coffee.

Tip of the iceberg man.

Wait 5-15 years from now the truth will come out about stern and the whole NBA.

----conspiracy off-----

Don't bitch about the NBA refs, the better team won. Lakers didnt trail that entire game and your sitting here talking about a brent barry pump fake from 26+ decideing GAME 5 of a 7 game series. Da Spurs had their chances, dont blame the entire game on one blown call or else you'll just turn into an ignorant basketball "fan." Wake up man

20 and 17 point leads (this is what the Spurs had in two of the games) aren't overcome by a couple of bad calls :twocents:

My rant wasn't about that particular game, as I do think the better team won (and I HATE the Lakers). Just that the reffing is an absolute joke, across the entire NBA.

Watching those guys makes me appreciate MLB umpires even more. A couple of home run calls this year not-withstanding, those guys are correct on instant calls an amazing percentage of the time.

If your going to worry about the NBA refs, then worry about all the"phantom" PI calls and non calls in football that you have seen time and time again. What about holding? That happens almost every play but NFL refs arent going to make that call.

NBA refs are professionals and wouldnt be officiating in the league if it were otherwise.

David Stern is the most powerful man on television
