NAU game

This is all binary....is the defense a 0 or a 1? Are special teams a 0 or a 1?

Anything in between is just pointless. Either it’s getting us to the top of the Big Sky or it needs to be changed. Making our way back to the top of the Big Sky has been the all along and should be going forward.

Not 2nd, not 3rd, and certainly not anything below that.

Maybe the defense will prove the defensive naysayers wrong over the next three games. One can hope right? Also it will help to dilute the stats from the EWU and UW games with three more games that are hopefully, at least statistically, better than those two.

Defensive stats are not the problem, defense in second half may be some of the best seen so far which is a positive. No players are giving up, they need some help getting them in position to succeed. Which can be done with the current roster and coaches.
When has only 30 minutes of decent defense gotten anyone anywhere?

Kirby Smart was tearing into his players after Florida scored in the 4th, ruining the shutout. And Georgia is 8-0 in the SEC. Maybe our coaches need to expect a little more than half a game of decent play.

No such thing as a good loss. There have been plenty of posts about inability to adjust at half in a positive way. Not the case last week. Still a loss. Griz did not roll over and quit. They lost, however the season is not over. How they continue with better play in the second half might have positive foundation to build on going forward.

Souers is very good FCS coach his team he has one of the best defenses and offenses. A great QB, they can run and throw with success.
This game will show if the Griz are paper tigers or are growing and going in the right direction.
Griz Special Teams is terrible nee-camp is terrible I do agree with negative posts about the STs. No sign of this portion improving this year.

I get a kick out of all of the hope and prayer that the second half of the Weber game somehow is an indicator of how we will perform the rest of the season. Makes it easy to look good when your opponent is up by 28 at halftime and taking the air out of the ball on offense to avoid turnovers, just like most teams do when they have a 28-point lead at halftime. Was that 34 points that Weber laid on us in the first half just a mirage? I could have sworn that it really happened!

I agree. Anybody who thinks that NAU is no good is gonna have a big surprise in store for them come Saturday.

It's hard to hang that Weber 41 on the D. It has actually been improving from a woeful start:

Opponent/Total Yards Allowed/First Downs Allowed

EWU/617/30
PSU/544/30
ISU/532/30
UND/343/12
WSU/298/21

I have been very critical of our D the last two years. But it was very sloppy offense and ST play that cooked our goose in the Weber game. The D played well enough to hang with Weber. The D was not responsible for 5 turnovers and was put into impossible situations.

Our first four series on offense consisted of 3 3-and-outs and an interception. The indefensible Stitt offense. The game was all but over then.

How would you view a Griz win against NAU,besides miraculous?
Is the season over yet?
The Griz are coming off their second loss to ranked FCS teams, if they loose they are mediocre if they win it is a two game season and things are looking up.
The NAU game is a must. Can the seniors rally the team? We will see...

Exactly right. And I believe that trying to hang accountability for a loss on a particular unit is a waste of energy. It's a team game.

First, Weber didn't take the air out of the ball in the 2d half. The play by play shows that.

Second, had UM not had the better second half by the O and great second half by the D, almost no one would be giving the Griz any chance of winning 2 or 3 games the rest of the season. Despite the horrible first half, and all the negatives and weak play, I also saw many positives that give reasonable hope that the team can rally for some wins. If Jensen is out, the task will get tougher, but the fight and heart of this team is very strong. They didn't give up against Weber, they have had good effort all season, and I think they will go into the NAU game expecting to win.

Third, if I have the choice between a talented team without enough heart versus a less talented team with huge heart, and one that will never give up, I will take the team with heart every time.

Fourth, why don't you try rooting for the Griz, and supporting them, this week, instead of just spewing the same negative crap over and over again. Or, do you so desperately want to be proven right, that you are rooting against the Griz?

Fifth, JD Quinn told me he has no clue who you are.

That's funny about Weber not taking the air out of the ball in the second half, since Jay Hill stated as much in his post game interview, when asked about his team scoring only 7 second half points.

I do root for the Griz every week. Why would I know JD Quinn?

Uhh, I would say "going through" suggests he's still in the test stage.

Correct. But the problem is that five of our six best defensive players will graduate. You can call me a neggie all you want, but I still want any of you glass-half-full guys to explain how our defense will be better next season, which is a scary thought (even on Halloween) since it is among the worst in the conference now!

Play by play shows that in the game WSU was about 50/50 run/pass
1st half was 40/60 run/pass
2nd half was 66/33 run/pass

so ....... they kinda did take the air out of the ball :thumb:

Actually, after the game, Hill didn't say that he took the air out of the ball in the second half. He said that after in the game, they got more conservative on defense as UM was running out of time. Note that the qb doesn't know why their offense was so less good in the 2d half; doesn't say they changed play calling.

"For whatever reason, the second half was an entirely different story.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Cantwell. “I am still working on that myself.”

“I don’t know if we got into conservative mode in the second half,” added Hill. “People can say I got a little conservative on defense but I knew (Montana) was running out of time. I wanted to make sure we didn’t do anything stupid to lose the game.”
