I've been to every Griz home game and he must not be screaming them that loud if I haven't heard them...
As for his more intense approach to working the officials & being blunt in interviews, I'm pretty sure we had a coach like that not too long ago...
He's coaching Utah now in the NCAA tournament.
Coach K probably scared the living hell out of a few refs while coaching here. Surprised he didn't draw more T's honestly with how often he stomped to get their attention while yelling something at them. I remember one game after a particularly bad call he did some kind of low-walk-dance move down the entire sideline in front of the Griz bench. Pretty damn agile for a big guy.
Different coaches have different methods of working the officials & different ways of answering questions in interviews. Some give "coach speak" that sounds all diplomatic to everyone and some are blunt and say what's on their mind. I for one see no problem with the way DeCuire has handled things. Hell, NAU's coach beaned a fan behind the bench with a damn clipboard in their last game. He probably was a bit too fiery but it's still good to see SOME fire on the sidelines!
Also DeCuire talking about EWU's defense wasn't far from the truth. They probably weren't the worst defensive team in the Big Sky, but they sure weren't known for their defense. A lot like their Football team they are great offensively but VERY shaky defensively.
As for "giving the game away" in the first meeting between EWU and the Griz...hell yeah we did. 16 turnovers with many of them being complete mental lapses and lazy passes (not forced turnovers) cost us that game. We cheated ourselves with those mistakes and should have won that game. It was very uncharacteristic of the Griz to make so many mistakes like that.
If the other coaches in the Big Sky don't like him maybe he's doing something right... Those same coaches picked the Griz to finish 8th and DeCuire made them all look like idiots by leading the Griz to a 1st place finish in conference.
Coaching isn't a popularity contest. I'm sure the other coaches in the Big Sky didn't like Hauck too much either. Yet he was a great coach for the Griz and dominated the Big Sky. DeCuire seems to have the same type of passion for the game and may not be quite as blunt but also doesn't seem to shy away from being honest with his answers and saying what's on his mind.
I guarantee you the players love him for his fire, and the student section sure as hell was loving him high-fiving them after the NAU game. He may very well be the type of coach we need to bring the atmosphere we used to have back to Dahlberg. I'm damn impressed with him so far, I can tell you that. We got a good one.
