NAU Coach Murphy

He screams obscenities that everyone can hear

I've been to every Griz home game and he must not be screaming them that loud if I haven't heard them...

As for his more intense approach to working the officials & being blunt in interviews, I'm pretty sure we had a coach like that not too long ago...

He's coaching Utah now in the NCAA tournament.

Coach K probably scared the living hell out of a few refs while coaching here. Surprised he didn't draw more T's honestly with how often he stomped to get their attention while yelling something at them. I remember one game after a particularly bad call he did some kind of low-walk-dance move down the entire sideline in front of the Griz bench. Pretty damn agile for a big guy.

Different coaches have different methods of working the officials & different ways of answering questions in interviews. Some give "coach speak" that sounds all diplomatic to everyone and some are blunt and say what's on their mind. I for one see no problem with the way DeCuire has handled things. Hell, NAU's coach beaned a fan behind the bench with a damn clipboard in their last game. He probably was a bit too fiery but it's still good to see SOME fire on the sidelines!

Also DeCuire talking about EWU's defense wasn't far from the truth. They probably weren't the worst defensive team in the Big Sky, but they sure weren't known for their defense. A lot like their Football team they are great offensively but VERY shaky defensively.

As for "giving the game away" in the first meeting between EWU and the Griz...hell yeah we did. 16 turnovers with many of them being complete mental lapses and lazy passes (not forced turnovers) cost us that game. We cheated ourselves with those mistakes and should have won that game. It was very uncharacteristic of the Griz to make so many mistakes like that.

If the other coaches in the Big Sky don't like him maybe he's doing something right... Those same coaches picked the Griz to finish 8th and DeCuire made them all look like idiots by leading the Griz to a 1st place finish in conference.

Coaching isn't a popularity contest. I'm sure the other coaches in the Big Sky didn't like Hauck too much either. Yet he was a great coach for the Griz and dominated the Big Sky. DeCuire seems to have the same type of passion for the game and may not be quite as blunt but also doesn't seem to shy away from being honest with his answers and saying what's on his mind.

I guarantee you the players love him for his fire, and the student section sure as hell was loving him high-fiving them after the NAU game. He may very well be the type of coach we need to bring the atmosphere we used to have back to Dahlberg. I'm damn impressed with him so far, I can tell you that. We got a good one.

It's obvious Hayford detests Travis, during his radio show last night he ridiculed TD for "cheerleading" during a time out instead of coaching to beat their press. He never referred to TD by name only "that Montana coach". He also said it was great to win in Missoula and show us that they're not the poor little brother anymore.

Grand Canyon had a 17-14 record, with an RPI of 280 (vs 182 for NAU).

Ouch. The CIT must've had a ton of teams turn down invitations if they are grabbing teams with RPIs that bad.

I know Oregon State and Minnesota are 2 teams that declined the CIT. I am sure there were others from the big-time conferences. They are too cool to "play-down" with us commoners.

The CIT is only for Mid Majors.....OSU and MINN. declined to play in the CBI tournament.....no power conference is invited to the CIT......UC Berkeley also declined the CBI...

1. I didn't realize PR purchased eGRIZ from Chris and has the ability to "run people out of here". When did that happen??

2. I would say it's fair to characterize TDC as a hothead. Since he's a GRIZ coach, I'd tend to use the term intense. But id probably use something else to describe him if he coached elsewhere.

3. I have no doubt other coaches dislike him.

4. I love numbers 2 and 3 above. I love his intensity and passion.

5. Hayford can be a dick. He certainly didn't win any popularity contests at whitworth.

6. I'd say the ewoo comments were in direct response to TDC talking after the game in Cheney about the fact that ewoo staff told them which door to exit from "when" the crowd storms the court.

7. I somehow missed the "we got cheated" comment but if TDC said that, it was a very unfortunate comment that shouldn't have been aired.

Agree on all points Everett, I was just pointing out Hayford's dick comments from last night. He really does like to play the "jolly old saint nick" role in public...most of the time.

I'm with you on all counts, especially 5 and 6. which door to exit from when the crowd storms the court, really? My two cents to Hayford, act like you been there before and dont be a dick.

As for point 5, I'm not doubting you, only would like to know what your talking about at Whitworth??? I didn't know about any bad blood there.

Nothing public that I'm aware of Sac, but I'm friendly with some of the staff members (and former members) at a few NWC teams (primarily SPU and PLU) and they weren't always complimentary of him.

U out of town nuts claiming Travis made statements he did not make are a bunch of bottom feeders. Travis was in my home 6 months ago and he spoke like the good coach he is. I have followed his coaching for years and we are more than lucky to have such a great man for our head coach.

I will take Travis over all and any head coach in our league.

He was more than likely referring to a late intentional foul call on the Griz but, really, a Montana basketball coach complaining about the officiating in Missoula? Now we've seen – and heard – everything.

Well, it was bullshit that it was called an intentional foul. If it's the one I'm remembering it was a foul most likely but more going for the ball than anything.

Tinkle worked the refs in Missoula too and I'm sure he hinted in some of his post game commentary that he wasn't too pleased by them. He was careful not to say something that'd get him suspended for a game, but he certainly wasn't always pleased with the ref'n even in Missoula.

What's your beef with DeCuire anyway? Seems you're going way overboard in trying to dig up stuff (that many coaches do including coaches in the Big Sky) and make it sound like DeCuire is an ass.

Good. I thought he would get sanctioned. Going after a ref after the game and poking/pushing (?) an opposing coach and telling him he was "F---ing lucky", is not what the post-game handshake is supposed to be about. At least, he apparently apologized fairly quickly to DeCuire (or whatever he did).

I think his humble apologetic tone in the press Conference and coming back out and shaking Travis' hand after he finished his radio interview, limited his suspension to one-game. I would have liked it to be a "one-game Big Sky conference tourney suspension" for next year, but I think it is fair. He never poked or pushed DeCuire, just stuck his finger in his face and apparently said what you claim. Haven't we all seen the video by now?

What concerns me is I do NOT think DeCuire would be as diplomatic if the situation was reversed. He's a hot-head with a bad reputation around the league for his pre and post-game comments. THAT is why he wasn't the coach of the year.

The NAU coach absolutely jammed his finger in DeCuire's chest, hard, and told him he was "f***[*] lucky" to have won--right after the NAU coach confronted one of the refs twice as the ref left the court. No one has ever said that DeCuire is a hothead as a coach, and he is not. Stop with your BS, or I will run you out of here. You need to apologize and admit, immediately, that you are wrong. Own up to your BS like a man, or get the F out of here.

:jack:

Don't have an opinion on how big a dick TD is claimed to be. So what if he is? He is a basketball coach and hired to continue and expand on the success of Tinkle. Took a nudge from Murphy to get him into the student section and pump them up. Cue to Zoo. Lets see if this carries over to next season.

Can anyone find the statement about getting cheated in the Missoulian that the Jokesman Review quoted?

4th to last paragraph. It's in the Missoulian and Kaimin too. I too had never noticed the comment.
