I'm posting this to my Egriz friends, enemies, and trolls (who are basically enemies, so that's redundant) to make a point and brag about my son. Humor me and bare with me. My son, Rocky, (hence the Rocklobster name) started college yesterday. He got a full ride scholarship to Soka University of America. It's a small liberal arts college in Alisa Viejo, about three miles from Laguna Beach. His mom and I are fu@#ing heartbroken because he's gone. Many of you have probably experienced the same thing. He's gonna run sprints for the track team. He wants to be a doctor.
To make my point, I need to go back his early life. When he was about one and a half year's old, we took him to the Griz games. We sat up in the new corner section when it first opened. I know, terrible parents, right? Subjecting your kid to the noise and multi-syllabic words. He usually fell asleep before halftime. The years went on, and we went to every game. Then one day, Rocky said, "I'm gonna be down there some day." He was eight. He then went on to go to Little Grizzly camps and play in the Missoula Youth Football (started in 4th grade, or Grade 4 for our Canadian posters). He loved it. Played right into high school at Sentinel and was on the practice squad as a freshman that took the state championship. Really cool. He loved Coach Oliver and all of the coaches there. Then, one day, he came up to his mom and I and said, "I'm done. I don't want to play anymore. I want to be a doctor." We were shocked. He loved football. Well, he got a concussion, and was out a few weeks. But it was a game in Helena where he knocked a guy out with a hit for five minutes when he made his decision. He transferred to Hellgate, ran track, his grades skyrocketed, and now he's going to the school of his choice.
My point is, these are kids and families are making huge decisions for different reasons. We always pontificate and wonder why a kid leaves the program-or God forbid-goes to fu%$ing Bozeman. It's not that simple. Our kid gave it a lot of thought. When we lose an athlete to another school or they just hang it up, it's not something any of us understand or know why they did. They're fu^$ing kids. I promise you, I'll never post for this long again. Thanks for listening. Go Griz.
