My Son is a Collegiate Athlete

I'm posting this to my Egriz friends, enemies, and trolls (who are basically enemies, so that's redundant) to make a point and brag about my son. Humor me and bare with me. My son, Rocky, (hence the Rocklobster name) started college yesterday. He got a full ride scholarship to Soka University of America. It's a small liberal arts college in Alisa Viejo, about three miles from Laguna Beach. His mom and I are fu@#ing heartbroken because he's gone. Many of you have probably experienced the same thing. He's gonna run sprints for the track team. He wants to be a doctor.
To make my point, I need to go back his early life. When he was about one and a half year's old, we took him to the Griz games. We sat up in the new corner section when it first opened. I know, terrible parents, right? Subjecting your kid to the noise and multi-syllabic words. He usually fell asleep before halftime. The years went on, and we went to every game. Then one day, Rocky said, "I'm gonna be down there some day." He was eight. He then went on to go to Little Grizzly camps and play in the Missoula Youth Football (started in 4th grade, or Grade 4 for our Canadian posters). He loved it. Played right into high school at Sentinel and was on the practice squad as a freshman that took the state championship. Really cool. He loved Coach Oliver and all of the coaches there. Then, one day, he came up to his mom and I and said, "I'm done. I don't want to play anymore. I want to be a doctor." We were shocked. He loved football. Well, he got a concussion, and was out a few weeks. But it was a game in Helena where he knocked a guy out with a hit for five minutes when he made his decision. He transferred to Hellgate, ran track, his grades skyrocketed, and now he's going to the school of his choice.
My point is, these are kids and families are making huge decisions for different reasons. We always pontificate and wonder why a kid leaves the program-or God forbid-goes to fu%$ing Bozeman. It's not that simple. Our kid gave it a lot of thought. When we lose an athlete to another school or they just hang it up, it's not something any of us understand or know why they did. They're fu^$ing kids. I promise you, I'll never post for this long again. Thanks for listening. Go Griz.

I was on that same freshman team with your son. That Helena game was brutal, one of our teammates broke his arm or something in that game. Also a terrible field made up of dirt and a little bit of grass. Glad to hear is doing well

Congrats on your son fullfing some of his dreams. Many are not able to make them come true and he’s a testament that you can make them a realty and his success is a testament to you and your wife’s parenting abilities.

To add to your last paragraph, I love my signature on eGriz which I’m not sure if you can read it so I’m adding it to this post. It’s a quote from a friend of Bill Kelly who arguably could be the greatest athlete to wear Montana colors. Unfortunately he died very young due to his life choices.

"In Bill's(Wild Bill Kelly) tragic death there might be some message for the college society that basks in the glory of the football team and the individual heroes, but overlooks the fact that they are like the rest of us with conflicts, fears, frustrations, and weakness."-Joseph Cochran, friend of Kelly's

Every time posters get on here criticizing these young men and women that are student athletes, I think of this quote.

Great story that shows that great kids make great life decisions!
I'm sure this is rough for you, and I still remember the day my parents brought me to school. They were 45 and 49 when I was born and I figured they'd be happy to be free of kids at last and that was 120 away is all.
Best of luck to your son with school and track.
For you and the wife, brace yourselves, the grand babies will be a long before you're ready for it.

Nice to have friends here.

What a great story. I love that some of these NAIA schools offer full scholarships for mens track and field, swimming and volleyball. With everyone being so football nuts and with Title IX those sports have really suffered for mens opportunities. Griz track scholarships are only partial.
It seems your son made a great choice. My son recently turned down a couple of JC baseball scholarships to play ACHA Hockey for the griz. I think he made the wrong choice considering the scholarship and fun of baseball vs the non scholarship and injuries of hockey but it wasn't my choice.
