My Biggest Reason for Excitement This Year....

citygriz

Well-known member
Bobby Hauck.

For those of you who know him or have met him, I hear he's a great guy.

But for many of us, far from the home front, we only communicate with Bobby through his press conferences.

To say he plays those close to the vest cheats the vest. So dour! Head down, memorizing stats. Did I say press conference? It's usually more like a wake. Okay, scraps for a future opponent. But you wonder: Did he lose a loved one? Have Covid? Or does he, like many coaches, just have it out for the press.

When, lo! This year, everything seems different! None of the normal Coachspeak: "This will be a character-building year for our student athletes." Or: "We're a young team. I'll look for growth from week to week." Or: "Yes, I know my job is on the line. That's what any coach signs up for."

Instead, Hauck touts this team like he's strip-club barker. Buttons are popping off that vest. "Come on in! See this show! We've got the talent!"

Team be good?

Bobby outside of press conferences is night and day different. I ran into him in an airport earlier this year at like 5 AM. I was going to just say hi real quick and give him a Go Griz so that I didn't annoy him on an early morning airport day. I could hardly get away. He asked where i was going, started making food recommendations, and genuinely acted like he was happy to see me. We had never spoken before. I walked away a bigger fan of them man.

Yep the sooner folks realize he almost puts on a show at the press conferences and media stuff vs how he is with fans, coaches, players, the school, and the athletic dept….the sooner they’ll realize they were completely duped thinking he was an ass hole jerk. It why I get a kick out of Cats fans who can’t stand him. That’s part of his show and it’s working perfectly. They have Hauck Derangement Syndrome and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Check out one of the press conferences. I believe it was after UND. He had a couple of transfers and they were both talking about how happy they are to be part of the Griz. He had some whisper like conversations with them on the side and he said “I’m sure glad you are too. You guys make my job easy”. Those guys had pretty big smiles on their faces. But like I said, it was a whisper to those players, but you know that’s how he is with all of his guys.

I taught Bobby's kid's in children's theater in Missoula for a few years when they were really young. The twin girls were great, and Robby was not. To be honest, he was a pain in the ass. I think his thoughts were elsewhere. Why wouldn't they be. Really can't blame him. Wants to be like Dad and Uncle Tim. Bobby and his wife Stacey were the most gracious, wonderful people. One time they even tore into Robby about rehearsal. Being a Griz fan, I was in awe of Bobby. Very genuine man. We're lucky to have him.

But why? Why the two faced? Why the "show"? Who's it for?

Maybe he would rather keep the attention on himself whether good, bad, or indifferent instead of his players as far as the media is concerned. Just a guess, but if the media hates him, his assistants and players don’t get the tough questions and can focus where he wants them to. I think it actually makes the players love him a bit more in some ways because they see the other side all the time.

There are plenty of media members who need to up their game. I would get annoyed by some of the idiotic, unoriginal questions some of these people ask too. And he has a ton of media obligations (pressers, coaches shows, podcasts, news show, etc) too so probably gets old. I’ve chatted with a few players who have played for him and they get a kick out of it and say he’s night and day with them and their Locker room and would run through the wall for him

Honestly, throughout his career, he has been more scrutinized by the media than any other big sky conference coach by a mile, and thus he gives most of them very little time. Its not really a show, he actually responds well to those media members that ask good questions and engage properly. Colter gets good responses from him, and a few others. Some ask dumb questions, are nosey about stupid things, or historically have picked battles with Bobby. I.E. the Missoulian.

I can understand it, and he indeed is a completely different demeanor anywhere else you may see him. QB club, radio show, rileys pod, anywhere publicly. People in the profession love the guy. Interesting story, I was at a san diego padres playoff game last year, guy I randomly sat next to happened to be on the strength and condo staff at sdsu when bobby was there after unlv. After striking up conversation and learning where I was from, he asked if I knew bobby. Gushed about, loved coaching with him. Small world!

The above answers would imply that it's indeed NOT a "show", but it's just Bobby going in irritated from the get go because of his previous interactions and knowing what's coming. I can certainly relate. lol

Colter asks decent questions gets good answers.
Rainey needs to up his question game and Bobby would not respond like he is at the dentist.
There is one more guy that as soon as his question is asked Bobby almost gets laser beams in his eyes.
I also believe Hauck will never get to high or low on the team in press conferences and never gives and bulletin board material. Riley and Coach have a fun conversation when ever they do interviews together.

Frank, from the missoulian, get the brunt of Bobby's disdain for tbe media.
