MSU/UCD game thread

We'll beat Davis. Maybe 14-0. Maybe 21-3. Either way its a win. The Cats have not faced a good D yet, nor has Eastern. We just have to score a bit more than they do. UND is the only other BSC team with a defense. Because we have a defense, we don't really have to score in the 50s. I'll take these "ugly" wins all the way to the playoffs. Don't count the Griz out in terms of potential offense when Henderson and others are back.

Honestly we are a Bobby hauck team this year. Tough in your face d. Low to medium caliber off.But enough to make the big plays when needed and find ways to win.

The cats did play UND though. They won 29-18. So if UND is a "good D" then the cats have faced one.

I do agree that we will beat UCD. I'm more concerned about how we'll do @Cal Poly, @EWU and vs the Cats later. Even home against Sac could be a challenge since if we allow ourselves to get in a shoot out with them it might not turn out the way we want. I think our D will win that game for us though. @SUU could be interesting too...not because SUU is any good but because we aren't a very good road team. Again though...our D is damn good so they likely will win that game for us too.

That said we could also just continue to eek out ugly wins and surprise a lot of people with our final record (I HOPE!). The Big Sky is pretty interesting this year in that no team has been dominant. EWU & MSU look great on offense, but their defense is atrocious. The Griz look very good on defense but their offense makes me want to stick a fork in my fcuking eye. NAU has the easiest schedule in the entire conference but still managed to lose to UNC. .

Hell, ISU still has playoff hopes! ISU!!! WTF?!?!

Also, once Delaney retires what if we hired Kramer/Shrek away from ISU? I know I made fun of him quite a bit in the past...with his manboobs :flash: , shrek like appearance and all that good stuff... but how he seems to be turning ISU around is pretty damn impressive. Plus it's be hilarious to beat up on the cats with their former coach. Can you imagine the butthurt coming out of Bozeman if that happened? That alone would be worth it! I'd probably end up blocked from texting a cat fan friend of mine though if that happened.

That remains to be seen. Hauck teams did that against playoff caliber opponents. So far Delaney has done that against bottom dwellers and mediocre opponents. After the UC Davis game we get into the part of our schedule that will show us who the Griz truly are this season.

Potomac hit the nail on the head. The next 3 weeks will tell the tale of the tape. Bobby H only loses Chippers... :coffee:

And you fella's laughed when someone said we would be better at QB this year. It wasn't me. Dakota can play and he's just getting warmed up. D Mac zoned in on one or two WR. Dakota goes to the open player. Nine to night, ten last weekend. So, who do you key in on? Frickin no one. You better get you're D ready. A track meet is coming to the Zoo. :o :o :o

Your offense is good against shitty teams. Your defense is a joke.

Your offense does very well against teams that have no defense. Congrats. No denying that.

It's amazing how quickly you all are to toss DMac under the bus and discount how good of a QB he was. I'm saying this as a Griz fan too. DMac was a hell of a QB. It's unfortunate that his career ended the way it did. If it wasn't for Ron Ash & staff's piss poor decisions last year he might have finished his senior season actually being healthy and leading you guys to a playoff win or two. You had a semi-decent D last year unlike this year.

This year yeah...you got Prokup or 2girls1kup whatever... Yeah he's very talented against teams with no defense. Your defense is absolutely horrible though too. So you aren't relevant I'm afraid. No team is going to go far in the playoffs that has no defense. You'll get destroyed by the first team that has a semi-competent defense and a decent offense.

Not saying the Griz will WOW the world either (offense is kind of important too) but it's definitely not time for you cat fans to start crowing about how great you are until you figure out how to play some D.

That said, I still think our QB is better. JJ, when in the system that he thrives in, is flat out awesome. Unfortunately our coaching staff is stubborn as hell and refuses to use our talent in the way it's meant to be used. Meh...it is what it is. Fact is our O is shaky at best, your D is laughable, and it's very likely neither of our teams will make it far in the playoffs because of our glaring weaknesses.

You have to admit, MSU is almost as good as EWU on offense. Found this over at bobcatnation from one of their beat writers, who I understand is actually a griz fan:

DeNarius told me in our post-season interview last spring that he has never run the zone read and that it's the worst offense for his skill set. He never had run it and never could run it and never thought he could be good running it. It was why Montana State wasn't any good on offense last year. DeNarius hardly ever kept the football in the read option, which made it so teams could key on Kirk and Johnson.

Dakota Prukop is the most unstoppable player in the Big Sky Conference and maybe the FCS. You are crazy if you think it's just a hot streak. He watches more film, has more athleticism, poise and swagger than any QB MSU has ever had.

Ash after the game tonight:

“It’s a perfect fit, his abilities in this offense,” Ash said. “This offense takes a very remarkable skill set because the quarterback has to be able to run and throw and read option plays and read pass plays. Over my career, I’d always had this thought that you can’t really run option football and a sophisticated passing game with the same guy because it takes too much time. Dakota can do both with a minimum amount of practice time. That’s what makes him special.”

Definitely agree with this. Ash et al didn't take advantage of McGhee's abilities at all his senior season.

Also, give it up man...you are a cat fan. Stop pretending to be a meth head from Cheney :P

Prukop is impressive against shit defenses, that's for sure. He's very athletic, has good speed, and has a good arm. Unfortunately for him the cat defense is so horrible they wont be going anywhere in the playoffs.

Reminds me a little of the Griz actually. Not because the Griz D is awful, they are looking very good. It's the coaching staff... We have a VERY talented QB, tons of talent at the skill positions on offense, a great defense, yet our coaching staff seems incapable of straying from their "smashmouth" wannabe game thus crippling the offense.

Very frustrating.

Both of our teams are unfortunately destined for underachieving seasons due to their major weaknesses. Yours being defense, ours being bullheaded coaching philosophy causing us to have an inept offense. EWU will suffer the same fate even with Adams. All offense, no defense = beatdown by NDSU or some other team with a decent defense & offense.

Unfortunately this year the Big Sky has no dominant team. In the past the Griz have been that team that people expected to compete for the NC. This year? Nope... there isn't one.

Right now you have EWU which is all offense and a defense that's an absolute joke. MSU who is all offense and a defense that couldn't stop a 3rd grade flag football team. UM who has a great defense but an offense that makes baby Jesus weep. And last but not least NAU who is no good yet has the easiest schedule in the Big Sky and may still slip into a playoff spot despite losing to UNC. Oh yeah...they'll get blasted in their first game too.

There are no good teams this year in the Big Sky that are good on both ends of the ball. That unfortunately means a likely early exit for all Big Sky teams in the playoffs...even if they have the "most unstoppable" player in the FCS.

Like I said, it wasn't me. Never would toss D Mac under the bus. I've been on the sideline with that young man to many times. Kid was a gamer. Hate to tell yell ya, it's not our D. It's our D coordinator. We have the kids. It's like watching J.J. not being able to do his work. Kind of makes you sick. He's not in the system anymore. I can't think of a kid I feel more sorry for, who played in the Zoo. He's just a kid. The bullshit that happened to him will last a lifetime. That's just not right.

Ironic, considering what happened to Denarius is now happening to JJ. Successfully running the zone read in HS and recruited here to run the same system, JJ quickly showed he was capable of being dominant in such an offense. Fast forward a few years and a coaching change later, and some wonder why the JJ we see today, in spite of all his talents, no longer shows the consistent play-making ability we all know he is capable of. The quick answer, he's a square peg in a round hole. I'm by no means saying that Delaney is beholden to Pflugrad's zone read scheme just because he has Jordan at QB, but it is not a leap to say that making him an under-center, pocket passer is not the wisest use of Johnson's talents. It is for these very same reasons that it's hardly an accident we've seen some of Jordan's best production recently in the shotgun or in hurry-up situations. There's myriad other reasons for this offense's recent struggles beyond Jordan being in a system that doesn't take full advantage of his talents, but it would seem to be common sense that it would be a step in the right direction to adjust the offensive play calling to account for what Jordan does best. I just don't want to look back on this season in regards to JJ the same way that Cat fans do in respect to McGhee's 2013 campaign.

Only one difference. One had a whole coaching change. J.J. and life changing events . One had four OC coordinators and a head coach that ran him into the ground. I don't think Mick would run a horse until he's broke. " That's dead, non-cowboys." Rob will. Run you until you're broke. Well, unless he's not pissed at you for being you. Gods speed to Jordan. The last five years of you're life, I wish you could have back. Way to play it out like a man. You amaze me Jordan. You are a Griz. Hats off.......

One of the things about the Cats offense that everyone is is ignoring is that their OL is playing lights out. Its easy for Prukop and company to make the plays behind a dominating OL.
