If there is damage in excess of $1,000, caused by an accident on a public "highway," the operator of the crashed/damaged vehicle is supposed to report it or otherwise be subject to the citation of the above stated MCA code.
Further MCA definition of public highway- Any road open to the public, in the state of Montana, is considered a public highway and all rules and regulations apply.
For example: Say a person lost control of vehicle on a MTN road, crashed and caused damage to their vehicle in excess of $1,000 can be, and I've personally witnessed, MHP Troopers cite for both losing control of a vehicle on a Mtn road, as well as leaving the scene w/o reporting it. There's several reasons, the most important, IN MY OPINION, not necessarily MCA statute, is it unnecessarily ties up LE and first responders thinking there may be injured individuals inside or nearby in need of lifesaving medical care. You'd be surprised how many people just drive by a rollover crash without stopping to see if anyone is actually inside and just call 911 to report it while they continue driving away. Not everyone, of course, but more than you'd think. Folks are afraid of getting shot, and I honestly can't say I blame them.
