MSU Bobcats Scouting Report

Another interesting dynamic is MSU's fast start to games, with UM's slow start. I don't have numbers to back that up but that seems to be the case? If MSU comes up and gets up 2 scores by the end of the 1st or early into the 2nd, how does that change the game?

MSU's 4th quarter numbers are a bit of a misnomer. Several games we've had comfortable leads, so the defense goes into prevent mode/subs out, and the offense goes conservative (sometimes not always).

I think for UM to win, and they certainly can do this, they can't get down early. At the same time, if UM is down a couple scores in the 2nd half, you'll probably realize you can just throw all over the Cat defense. Abandoning the run and passing all over our prevent defense is the reason teams have come back on us.

From Last week. If this happens it will be over very quickly.

Historically, I've always thought WaGriz to be worth about 7-10 points.
will that change if YOU are in the stands of WGS, though? you've got to be worth a field goal or a safety, at least!

A fast start by MSU is my biggest concern. The Griz are what they are, and I think the longer it is close, the more likely the Griz win. If MSU scores on their first two or three possessions and the Griz don't respond, it could be a long day.

Shhhhhhhhhh.....I haven't notified the bookies that I will be in attendance. Once they find out, I have no doubt the line will shift significantly.

Brilliant analysis.

I've often found that the team that has the highest score at the final gun usually wins the game.

Good point, CWR. This is what worries me about this game. I think the Griz offense will roll against the Cat D, but our slow starts have me worried that we'll be rolling up hill most of the game.

I'm loving this thread!

I moved to Germany from AZ for work and it's been a blast streaming games at night in Berlin and drinking great beer! The 11pm start is going to be rough on me this Saturday though!

Anyway, Brint thanks for your coherent posts. It's been nice reading up on the team!

I'm hoping for a clean game where Wags isn't tackled each play and the offense decides 1st downs are better than hail mary passes on 3rd in 3. Lol. Here's to a smart game and hopefully the coaches have their best coaching performances to date, since their jobs rely on it!

Hellgate class of 99
UM class of 03

On scoring and whatnot, I pulled the Grizzlies home games and the Cats road games. Here's the averages;

1st Qtr

Griz: 13.2
Cats: 12.2

2nd Qtr

Griz: 8.2
Cats: 7.75

3rd Qtr

Griz: 11.8
Cats: 14.5

4th Qtr

Griz: 4.2
Cats: 10.5

Average scoring shows that the Cats average 45 points per game on the road while the Griz average 37.4 points per game at home. Based on prior trends it won't be the opening scoring but how the 2nd half goes.

We have not defeated even one quality team this season, with combined records of our 6 FCS wins being 19-45. Well, we are playing another quality team this Saturday..... a team very much in make-up like EWU. They can score in bunches, but have a terrible defense. But then, with our offense being of the 1970's vintage, it will be a challenge for us to score even against the Cat's sieve defense.

This is how I see it if we are going to win Saturday:

1) Come out ready to play football from the opening kick-off..... something we have not done much this season. We are usually flat the entire first quarter. I can only remember one TD the entire season on our first possession. Have there been others? If we get behind again like we did against EWU, it will be tough, especially if the weather is a factor.
2) The team needs to be more inspired than it has in recent games. Other posters have mentioned how our team just does not show the fire that previous teams have shown, and I agree. This comes from coaching, or lack of it. Delaney couldn't inspire a bowel movement at an Ex-Lax party. Hopefully the other coaches can get them fired up. It IS THE BOBCATS, after all!
3) Our defense needs to control their running game. The Cats have put up some huge rushing numbers all season long. They use a very sophisticated running game, with lots of mis-direction, multiple formations, counter plays, pulling linemen, motion, and option football. If we can stop them from running the ball, and make them a passing team, we will win.
4) On offense, we need to STOP THROWING THE 40-YARD PASS 10 times a game, many times into coverage. Instead, focus on controlling the football longer by moving the football in long, time consuming drives against the Cats weak defense. This also keeps their potent offense off the field.
5) Finally, our special-ed teams need to have a "neutral" game, in which we don't lose the special teams war. We need to at least be neutral on special teams.

Brint - thanks. Always full of substance.

Contrast with the garbage in the quote above:
1. Come ready to play.
2. Play inspired.
3. Stop the run.
4. Keep their offense off the field.
5. Execute solid special teams.

Give it a rest Monte, high school freshman football players can do what you do.

Oh, I am sorry I didn't include info from the Cats media guides, previous box scores, and meaningless graphs for your benefit.

Would get off Brint's ass? What did he do to you? You have a lot of great points but you attack Brint (one of the nicest guys out there who bleeds Maroon and Silver) with enough venom to poison every page you post on. Is it to "stir the pot?" It's very AG1 of you. I agree with a lot that you say, but your hard-on for Brint is one of those things that makes this board hard to read.

Before you blow off, why don't you try reading some of the other threads, where Brint slams me without reason? I never made a single post critical of this guy until he took it upon himself to go after me. But I guess since he is the lead hack on this board, he gets a free pass on slamming other posters, but when they respond in kind, guys like you get your fuchsia britches in a wad.

And please step off on the old "bleeding maroon and silver B.S.". He doesn't bleed it any more than thousands of other Griz fans including myself. He is just way more obsessive and obviously craves the attention.

You might as well throw those stats out the window as this is not just any regular season game. Since the streak ended, the average cat/griz score has been 24.8 to 15.9. I don't ever remember a "shoot out" like you are suggesting. I do remember a few "blow outs" tho

Yeah... I can't really recall any shoot outs per se. Usually closer/tighter games with some blowouts sprinkled inbetween.

I agree. I think it will be rather low-scoring, and very close. Could be decided by a turnover, missed FG (gee, I wonder which team might do that?), or failure of a coaching staff to make half-time adjustments to what the other team is doing.

Monte, what are you - like 16 years old?

The manager from Taco Bell on E. Broadway called. That cashier position you applied for is now available. Give them a ring 406-728-6667.

A whole new career level, with a new and different kind of dark purple outfits, is awaiting your call.

counter assault must be some poor clown working the counter @ mickey d's

I doubt if monte will respond......

I am sure the Griz will be in a 4-3 defense no matter what the offense does, like they have the past 2 seasons, with the exception of the EWU game this year where we actually did play some nickel, Van Ackeren needs to have another big game, he has been great on the edge this season.

Yep, the keys to MSU's run success are limiting VanAck and Wags. Get those two blocked and big things can happen for the Cats.

Just hold, tackle, pull, or chop block Wags. It's been open season on him since Big Sky play started and it rarely gets flagged.

If he lines up against John Weidenaar he will get plenty of that. The guy is mean and nasty.
