More Departures?

Delaney said that Greenberg was number 1 going into fall camp. I listened to him speak after the Cat / Griz golf fundraiser in Billings last Friday. In the same breath he also said that it did not mean a whole lot and that it would be a battle for the starting job come fall.

Thanks for the clarification. Having followed only through online stories this was never stated. However, this was said only after Delaney knew Worst would not be with the team.

Again, PR, you're cherry picking. I never said he was the clear-cut no. 1. Yes, I personally believed he was the best option, but I saw the competition and truly believe it was between him and Lider.

How can you state that I am the one who has no basis? You are the one saying Greenberg came out of spring as the no. 1. Where has that been stated? I believe that Lider is still the better option (which is saying something), but Delaney has never officially announced Greenberg as the no. 1. Greenberg was 2/3 on field goals his senior year in high school, with a long of 35 yards, and has kicked one field goal here at Montana. Since you judge Worst off of game play and Greenberg has essentially none in the past 3 years, what is your basis?

I love that Greenberg is grinding it out here, but if I go straight off talent right now, I just don't see it. For the betterment of the team though, I hope I'm wrong.

Sorry, but no one said you said Worst was the "clear cut" no. 1. I just repeated what you had said, and what you later confirmed that you had said. As someone else has pointed out, Delaney has said Greenberg came out of spring ball at no. 1. Brint also after spring ball that he thought Greenberg was no. 1. A played recently told me Greenberg was no. 1. 67% is certainly better than what Worst kicked here. I judge Greenberg by what I've read about him from high school (see link), from watching practices and some scrimmages this spring, from what players have told me since spring ball, and from Delaney saying he came out of spring ball no 1. This is what I said about him above: "Greenberg came out of spring ball as the no. 1 kicker and has apparently been kicking well recently. Greenberg had terrific credentials from high school. Hopefully, he's now on track to step up to be a consistent kicker and more like what UM has had in the past."

"Harrison Greenberg Best Kicker In NW Getting Closer

Lake Oswego’s magical run to their first State Championship would not have been possible without the booming leg ofHarrison Greenberg. The kid can really pound the ball.

His stats included an average kickoff of 64.5 yards, an incredible hang time, and 85 out of 89 PATS Made. He is also a very good FG Kicker but rarely got the chance at LO who rolled through the season.

His size and 4.59 speed make him a big help on the field as that crucial guy who might just need to make a big stop beyond his kicking duties."

"Greenberg went 6 for 7 in field goals and 46 of 49 with Extra Points. He also kicks off and punts too.

While he is above average at all the kicks it is Field Goals where he thinks he can shine the best.

My best last year was 36 yards and many of my field goals were over 30 yards. But I have hit a 53 yarder and many over 50 in camps and work outs,” said Greenberg. “So I am ready when Coach needs me to hit long one in a game.”

Greenberg is mechanically very sound and has a powerful leg. The trademark of any kicker. He is working out 2 times a week with a specialty strength Coach and also trains with two different Kicking coaches when he can."

No, the coaches have been saying it since spring ball ended.

It's just a little interesting that you have so much confidence in a kicker whose longest FG in an actual game at any level is 35 yards. I'm ending my side of the debate here and we'll just have to wait and see. 8/30 can't get here soon enough!

After reading these posts back to front, our kickers' struggles finally made sense.

After seeing Greenberg's HS kicking stats and a quote attrbuted to him:

Greenberg is mechanically very sound and has a powerful leg. The trademark of any kicker. He is working out 2 times a week with a specialty strength Coach and also trains with two different Kicking coaches when he can.

Then we see the fall off in college and this statement from MD appears:

He stated that he was done working with the placekickers because it was not good for him or them.

I now think we can bank on improved kicker play this year.

Good catch and it does make sense. Too bad for Worst.

Where did I say I have confidence in him? I said "Hopefully, he's now on track to step up to be a consistent kicker and more like what UM has had in the past." I have never even said he would be the no. 1 kicker in the fall. Did you know that Greenberg has never missed a FG over 35 yards in a game? The 35 yarder you mention is the longest ever attempted in a game. But, in practice, he kicks some over 50.

Did you see Greenberg kick in any practices this spring? How many scrimmages did you attend this spring?

I attended two and agree that Greenberg was right in the mix with Lider and Worst during those. However, in watching him kick before games it has been painful at times.

Let's just let this one go though, this is WAY more than I ever want to talk about underclassmen kickers  .

Sorry, I'm not stopping until you say something that allows me to say you obviously never played the game. Ha. Yes, I think we've sufficiently covered this subject and run it into the ground. While I believe I furnished good information on Greenberg, neither one of us know how he or Lider will kick in the fall. Judging by the 40 time mentioned in one article, it looks like Greenberg could run circles around us if he wanted to.

Sorry to see Worst go but I wish him luck. I think that if we had a kicking coach (aka head coach) who was worth a damn, Worst could've been a great kicker this year, and possibly last year. Guess we'll see how he does in Idaho.

The implication here is that anybody watches Idaho football??? Seems unlikely to me.

Andy Larson told me last year he would be glad to help with our kickers. He thought he could help. Mick should call him.
isn't there a limit on coaches? in order to do that the kickers would probably have to hire him on their own. anyone know the rule?

Dave Henkel, who beat out Andy Larson until he injured his hammy in 1995, also offered his services to Mick for free to help with the kicking game and was turned down. Not a good sign.

That is the claim, but with our kicking game I think I would make an effort at the least.

Last year I offered Coach Delaney the proposition that I would stand behind the kickers in practice and rack my 870 Remington right before they kicked. As of yet, my email offer remains unanswered. Apparently the coaching staff of the Montana Grizzlies doesn't want or is willing to acknowledge the input of Griz Nation.
