Montana vs. Texas

So The grizzlies and longhorns have a lot in common. Last year we both made the National Championship and lost. This year we are either not going to the playoffs or not going to a bowl game (TEXAS). Leadership was lacking at the quarterback position.

One huge difference I see. The Longhorn fans know it will be turned around and will be in National Champion talks again. But for whatever reason, Fans, mostly fairweather, think that the Grizzlies are done and screwed.

P.S. I know what all you guys will say. It is because of Pflu! I say screw that! Tell me why else besides PFLU!
 
I don't think we are done, but I hope this is a wake up call. We have sort of been coasting along on our reputation while other BSC schools have been working hard to try to catch up. Our recruiting budget is woefull, most BSC schools are spending much more than us. MSU outspent us last year $408,000 to $170,000 in recruiting. (The joke in the AD is that Coach Pflu spent his entire recruiting budget in The Olive Garden last night). Sooner or later, that catches up to you. MSU is killing us in in-State recruiting in all sports except women's BB. They own Great Falls. Weber is camped in Honolulu and bringing waves of linemen each recruiting class. While other BSC schools are find ways to free up money for athletics, quite the opposite, our Administration is funneling money earned by athletics to Main Hall. It drives me crazy that the AD has to rent the field house from the University for $500,000. We need to invest in facilities like yesterday. UM students have made it clear that they will not support athletics, hell even Sac State students have a realistic Student Athletic Fee that brings in $9,000,000 annually.
 
Texas has the highest paid head coach in the nation and undoubtedly an unlimted recruiting budget. A neighbor and avid Longhorns fan said one kid they wanted really bad came on board and his father suddenly landed a job as a janitor in the state being paid $90k per year. Mulitply that times 85 and that is a lot of financial clout to bring to bear on a program -- and what did it gain them? At least the Griz had a winning season. I think the problems come down to weakness at the QB position, and I think we are really missing JD Quinn & co. on the OL. I watched the Bears and Eagles yesterday, now that Cutler is the kind of QB we need.
 
Well I hope all the fairweather and bandwagon fans all leave and anyone who thinks we are screwed can leave too.

I don't think it is all gloom and doom. However, I think there is a fear of the unknown and right now Pflu is kind of an unknown. There were so many things that turned negative this season that I have to wonder why that was. I know about the injuries and shakey QB play but there were many other things as well.

So for me, it is just because there are so many questions surrounding the coaching. TX knows their coach can bring it home. For us, it is still a big question mark. That said, I am pulling for him to succeed and be an outstanding coach.
 
I've seen this question asked before, but I haven't seen anybody say we're done or doomed or through. I think people are putting too much stock in the complaints following a disappointing season. The Griz are hardly "over."
 
I say all of our 2011 opponents are done and screwed! 8-)

We are not on the way down! Last season is over! All I can think about is putting the hurt on every team we play in a way that reminds them that we are the Montana Griz!

Cutler is the kind of QB the Griz need?

Do you realize Cutler has NEVER been on a winning team since high school? He still may not be. The Bears could easily lose their next 5 games and finish at 8-8.

Cutler has led the league in INTs a couple times as well, and if you think Roper had a devil-may-care attitude, you should have seen Buttler on the sidelines and at the post confs of the games he's lost since he has been in Chicago.

Since you were watching that game, did you see Vick? That's what a true player and the modern prototype looks like. He willed his team back into that game and gave them a shot at the end after being in an 18 point hole late in the game.

I don't get the yokels that keep blaming the season on the Selle situation. Selle outright LOST the EWU and Poly games. Roper outright WON several of our games for us this year. WSU is the only really bad game he had.

How are you able to see the difference between Longhorn fans and Griz fans? I guarantee there are plenty of Texas fans that have some of the same feelings as Griz fans. I don't recall anyone saying that the Griz wouldn't get back to national title talks again. It's like I have said many times on here, criticism is what sports fans do. Go watch any program on espn, that's what they do. Every week there is some post about fair weather this and that; we are all Griz fans, that's why we are on here in the first place. It will be great if Pflugrad can turn things around and get back to the playoffs next year, but he didn't quite get it done this year, that's the truth. There is no reason to sugar coat anything, it is what it is. Sure, there are other factors involved; QB play, injuries, special teams play. But somehow they were able to make the playoffs the 17 years before, with many of the same setbacks. The sky is not falling here, it happens. I'm going to support Pflugrad because he needs some time. We will know after next season.

I watched the first three quarters and what I was referring to was the way he played during that time frame. He had defenders in his face and yet he was mobile enough to move the ball in 25-30 yard chunks. I don't follow Cutler or the Bears that closely, but Cutler looked just like the Griz QB with the defense in the backfield, where the Griz would go 3 and out, he managed to get the ball upfield. That is what I was talking about, all the rest of the stuff is just you in your usual fashion reading enough into it to form the slam that you always respond with.

Well, you weren't paying very close attention to that game or to the Griz season then.

Cutler is leading the NFL in sacks taken this year. The one play you are refering to is the ONE time in his life he has scrambled away from pressure and not thrown a pick. He's horrible under pressure, probably the worst QB under pressure in the histroy of the NFL, he had 18 INTs in 08, then he threw 26 in 09. He flat out lost 5 games last year. It's revisionist attitudes like yours that are going to set the Griz back 25 years.

The defense was almost never, ever in the backfield all year for the Griz. We had some of the best QB protection UM has ever had this year. We lost games because Ngyen, Sambrano, Chase, Kemp, and yes Selle couldn't hang on to the ball. The EWU, Poly, and MSU loses were strictly due to turnovers. Nothing else.

Blaming the season on QB play is dishonest and lets the people who actually pissed the season away off the hook.

You were the moron who started a threat entitled "Fire Selle!" after the EWU game. If that isn't blaming the QB, then you must not really know the difference between honesty and dishonesty. I agree that Selle didn't play up to his potential in those first two losses, but to say that our offensive line played well this season is an absolute joke. I know you don't make it out for many games, but what game other than Western State did you ever think our offensive line played well? Injuries and inexperience aside, that line just did not play like it had in the past and it showed for both Selle and Roper in all 4 losses.

As Alpha says, we just didn't have the talent this year, especially on offense, to make it to the postseason. Despite stellar play on defense most of the season, our offense couldn't get the job done. I'm not the first Griz fan to say that, and I certainly won't be the last.
 
Mack brown said he will evaluate all areas including coaches....mark my words some assistants at Texas will be replaced.
