Montana vs Out of State Ratio for Success

GrizzGriz said:
To quote Lou Holtz, " We will get the heart and soul of our football team from the state of Minnesota. However, we will have to go elsewhere for the arms and legs."

Barry Alvarez said the same thing (basically) while coaching Wisconsin :

"Our heart & soul is from Wisconsin, but we have to go elsewhere for our hands & feet"
(I'm sure he got it from ccHoltzch)

The Cats right now have more Montana kids than we do, fact. How is that working out? Bottom line, I'd prefer to see the kid from Montana if the talent is equal...if not, go elsewhere and get it. I do not want us to start bringing in ten average Montana kids every year to say we have more Montana kids than our rival. In my view, our friends in Bozeman have done that and it never works out. The key is to get the best three or four and compliment with some walkons that are lesser known but have the drive to be successful long term. That's a recipe that has worked in Missoula.

Couldn't agree more...which is what we seem to have done with our last class....got probably the top 5 Montana kids....than brought in national talent with them..I like how we recruit.....while MSU on the flip side is apparently bringing in a coaching staff that knows how to recruit montana and montana only....they would bring in one hell of an NAIA school class from what I hear......Im intersted to see how they pan out the next couple of years while playing 20 kids from Montana every game.

The debate about who has more Montana kids on the roster is silly. However, with 85 roster spots and only 63 scholarships, there are going to have to be a member of walk ons and partial scholarship recipients. By and large those are going to be the Montana kids.
