Montana vs Out of State Ratio for Success

It became about the Fargodome because some North Dakota State fans are stalking our board, anyways I think we all can agree Kramer was Bobby's bitch.

Food for thought - Do you think NDSU is as successful as they are because they recruit more in-state kids? ... Yeah, I don't think so... :coffee:

I think they play the same way we used to play, and by in-state they are slightly different being literally on the border with Minnesota. Its basically like going to an in-state school for Minnesota kids since Minnesota only has one division 1 college team. NDSU is really setup nicely for recruiting success honestly, unfortunately they play in a dumpy crappy stadium that only holds like 18K.

I am guessing you have never watched a football game in the Fargdome. I get if you don't like indoor stadiums, but dumpy and crappy is not a word I would use to describe it. Every seat is fold back with tons of room. Easily is a top 5 FCS stadium and night be the best homefield advantage in the FCS with WaGriz right there.

16-0 in the playoffs inside the dome.
22-1 all time in home openers
182-22 all time record (.853 winning percentage)

Two things:
1. As for the bolded above: Duh!

2. It is getting next to absurd how many times a T-Buff fan has to post stats on eGriz for validation. Dude, we know, it is a great program. I wonder how many times per day an Alabama fan logs onto ShaggyTexas.com to say nothing more than:

"Oh yeah? 15 NCs, 29 conference titles, 34 bowl wins, 57 All-Americans, and we've never missed the playoffs. So, uh . . . yeah, so . . . just in case you guys don't have access to Wikipedia."

There are few places with as bad of weather as Fargo. Fortunate for a dome come playoff time.

Still don't get the dumpy and crappy comment. That building is still vertually flawless from initial construction . Main concourse is spacious. Likely the best locker rooms in the FCS. Plenty of bathrooms throughout.

Ya man WaGriz is probably the best. That doesn't mean everyone else has a shitty stadium.

Oh, c'mon! You're doing this on purpose.

Way more spacious than the seats at Tennessee!

If you took both schools' Montana kids and put them on one team, and put both schools' out of state kids on the other team, which team would be better?

I'd take the Montana team solely cuz they'd have Brady G and Roberts

you sure have a lovefest...mancrush...on BG

To Answer:

Once they are a GRIZ I dont give a flying fluck where they came from...

You and I may not care but a lot of our fanbase seems to make this SUCH A BIG DEAL every year and I want to hear from them what they expect every year in terms of amount of instate players.

I am 100% behind you on that though I don't care where they are from, winning matters more.
Do you know the entire fanbase?

How did this become about the Fargo dome which is not dumpy. But I do agree indoor stadiums bug me to. I lived in Seattle and watched a lot of Seahawk games in the Kingdome. Very loud from the echoing sound, but I hated that place. I hated Kibbie, Holt Arena, Superdome etc. I just don't like any indoor stadiums, just doesn't feel like football, so I ended up buying Husky season tix instead.
Couldn't agree more! Football is meant to be played outside in the elements. If that's not your kind of football, then we'll never be on the same team.

I'm born and raised in Montana. I love it when a Montana kid makes good. For me it's the underdog concept. Many of the successful ones come out of nowhere, like MM. But, like stated before, we have a small pool to draw from. There are probably only 8-10 every year that can even compete at the D1 level and the extra special ones, rightfully, go to the FBS. To me it is ludicrous to think we could field a competitive team drawing anywhere higher than around 20% from in state. If we expect to beat the NDSU's of the world we need high level FCS talent. The "special" Montana kids will still shine through.

I was wondering when this yearly debate would rear its head.

However, its usually the kitties crowing about winning the instate battle... and yet get their a$$e$ kicked later in the year.

#1- I hope the Griz get the best 3-5 players each year from Montana.
#2- The level of football is NOT the same as schools in other states
#3- Facilities/ weight rooms are woeful in Montana compared to other states
#4- Most players from other states go to several summer camps and get better against better comp
#5- In some states (Texas for example), The students have athletics period every day of EVERY SEMESTER!
#6- Numbers... and when you only have what, 800 seniors that play football in Montana and what 30 that are worth looking at... the odds are stacked against them.
#7- FILM, FILM, FILM... Most Montana coaches don't help in any way the recruiting of their athletes.

Look, I love seeing the MM, Dickenson's etc have huge success, but they are BY FAR the exception not the example. Just take a look each year at the number of Montana players that walk-on or sign and are gone by the end of the first year. Without looking its around 60%. 80% by year two.

Seriously ask yourself this question. If the kats had 90 Montana players and the Griz had 5, yet the Griz spanked the Bobcats in October, would you really care about where they came from?

BTW... If you are interested in teams with a bunch of Montana players, the frontier conference is always looking for new fans!

I've lived in several states and have done a bit of volunteer coaching outside of Montana. Besides the powerhouse programs, the brand of high school football really isn't that much better in most places. Matter of fact in a lot of schools football isn't really as popular as it used to be with sports such as lacrosse, soccer, and alternative sports getting more focus even from the better athletes. Not every area is like Texas and bleeds football. Also, most Montana high schools that I know have athletic classes also (or physical condition, weight lifting, training, whatever you want to call it...)

It is crucial that we continue to offer walk-ons and partials to kids that may be under the radar. It goes beyond Mariani. There are numerous players that were either walk-on or partial scholarships coming out of college that became All-Americans for us, many made the NFL (eg: Anderson, Reynolds, Biermann, Schillinger, Wags, Harris, I could go on...).

I agree in that it doesn't really matter where the players come from, but because of our past success with Montana athletes, I'm sure it is and will continue to be a priority to recruit in-state.

Real Chief, if you want to hear from the majority of the Griz fan base, you need to explore a different avenue. As great as Egriz is, in case you haven't noticed, ALL of Griz Nation doesn't post here.

Texas, California, Ohio, Penns., Florida, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana...
The Best Montana team would not be in the top 30 of any of those states...

You say most Montana schools have athletic classes please name them... Because at least until 3 years ago it was against Montana state rules to do so...

The point is we are talking about a University, not a local High School...

And to think a team should jones about Montana kids is just plain stupid.
