Montana at Weber

the griz 2009 game is still recent enough the team wuoldnt be dumb enough to look past the griz.

Hopefully they remember the year they lost twice in the same year at home to MSU too.

I think Weebs wins by double digits in the end after free throws. I think they are just fine to look past the Cats. I just hope the Griz don't look past NAU...always tough to play at 7000 feet even if NAU isn't that great. In Missoula, different story...Griz win a very close one. Only conference loss by Weebs on their way to a first round NCAA win this year..............

nau/sac is the toughest road trip because of travel. but since you have ogden instead of sac i am not sure hwhat that means but for us, it is good you are going to flagstaff on thurs. the big sky really gave us a beauty of a schedule if you take a close look. we dont even have to come to the montanas on the same weekend.

ever since unc joined i see the big sky schedule and usually hate it. this yr i was like woa....that is a great schedule.

Wow..watched UM waltz over NAU with ease.....as i thought they would.Switched over to Weber and MSU....if Weber plays like that against UM, the Griz will win....mid way through the second and Lillard has 15....whatever MSU is doing is working as they are not down just 6...I hope my prediction of a Weber win is sooooooo wrong.....the Griz really do have a better than average shot at winning at Ogden..depends upon which Weber team shows up....

Weber State basketball: Wildcats struggle in beating Montana State

... “It just says we fight,” WSU guard Scott Bamforth said. “We know we’re not going to shoot the ball well every night,” Bamforth. “Good teams find a way to win. Even if we shoot well, if comes to us playing hard. If we don’t play hard, any team can beat us.” In addition, forward Kyle Bullinger, out nine games with a dislocated right elbow, finally made an appearance. He was rusty, but healthy in time for Saturday’s showdown with Montana, also unbeaten in conference play. “We shot 33 percent and still won,” Rahe said. “I’ll take it.”

OGDEN -- Weber State didn't start well and didn't shoot well, but the end result came out just the way Wildcats wanted, a double-digit win.

Junior guard Scott Bamforth, averaging 20 points per game since Big Sky play began, tossed in another 20 on Thursday as Weber State won its seventh straight game, defeating Montana State 63-49 at the Dee Events Center. The Wildcats (13-3, 5-0 Big Sky) remained perfect in conference to set up a Saturday showdown between Big Sky unbeatens with Montana for the top of the conference standings. The Grizzlies (11-5, 4-0) defeated Northern Arizona 78-53 Thursday to keep their Big Sky record perfect as well. Weber State point guard Damian Lillard scored 17 points to move past Jimmie Watts (1972-76) for fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list and needs two points to surpass Wildcats legend Willie Sojourner (1968-71) for fourth place. Lillard's scoring average fell to 25.8 points per game, still No. 1 in the nation, as he scored fewer than 20 points for just the fourth time this season.

We don't need to win this game, but we do need to show the Weebs that their quest for the conference title won't be a cakewalk. And we still have some tough road games at EWU and Portland State. I was happy to see the reserves get some good minutes, and happy to see them more than hold up their end of the deal. We'll need good depth down the stretch.

QUICK HITS
• Riding a seven-game winning streak and a 5-0 start in Big Sky Conference action, the Weber State Wildcats are back home Saturday night.
• First place in the Big Sky will be on the line when the 5-0 Wildcats host the Montana Grizzlies who are 4-0 in conference play.
• Weber State is 13-3 overall following a 63-49 win over Montana State Thursday night.
• This will be the 112th all-time meeting between Weber State and Montana. The ‘Cats have played the Grizzlies more than any time in their history.

HOME COURT SUCCESS
The Wildcats are 9-0 at home this season, which is their best home start since the 2002-03 season when they finished 13-0 at home. Dating back to last season the Wildcats have won 10 straight and 17 of their last 18 games at home.

INJURY REPORT
The Wildcats finally had some good news on the injury front as senior Kyle Bullinger returned Thursday after missing nine games with a dislocated his right elbow. Junior Frank Otis suffered a knee injury Dec. 7 at BYU and did not play. He is still listed as questionable for Saturday’s game with Montana. Freshman center James Hajek dislocated his knee in last Saturday’s game at Portland State and is expected to miss four to six weeks of action.

ABOUT MONTANA
Montana enters Saturday’s game with an 11-5 overall record and a 4-0 record in Big Sky Conference games. The Grizzlies are 4-3 on the road this season. They are coming off a 78-53 win at Northern Arizona Thursday night. In that game Montana shot 58 percent from the field and held the Lumberjacks to 30 percent shooting. Montana also has home wins over Eastern Washington and Portland State and a road win at Idaho State.
The Grizzlies lead the Big Sky in scoring defense, allowing just 62.4 points per game. Saturday’s game will feature the top scoring team (Weber State) against the top defense team (Montana). Montana is also first in field goal percentage defense and blocked shots and ranks second in assists and turnover margin.
The Grizzlies are led by junior Will Cherry who is sixth in the Big Sky in scoring at 14.5 points per game and leads the league in steals at 2.3 per game. He is also fifth in assists and seventh in free throw percentage. Kareem Jamar is averaging 13.4 points per game. Senior Robin Selvig is fifth in the league in rebounds at 6.5 per game and fifth in blocks. The Grizzlies roster also includes senior Shawn Stockton, the nephew of John Stockton.

HEAD COACH WAYNE TINKLE
The Grizzlies are coached by former Montana standout player Wayne Tinkle who is in his sixth season with the team. Tinkle spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Montana before becoming the head coach. Entering Saturday he has a 102-69 record overall and is 55-29 in Big Sky games with the Grizzlies.
Tinkle is 5-7 in his career against the Wildcats, with Randy Rahe 7-5 in his career against the Grizzlies.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 112th meeting between Weber State and Montana. Weber State has played Montana more than any opponent in its history. The Wildcats hold a 63-48 all-time series advantage over the Grizzlies but Montana has won four of the last five games played between the two teams. The Grizzlies won two of three against the ‘Cats last year. In games played in Ogden Weber State leads 40-15 all-time and have won seven of the last eight played at the Dee Events Center.

I would not be surprised if Weber wins this at the foul line. They seem to do well at home at the foul line.
Nothing better then home cooking.

Not sure about the "home cooking" but it might factual. I watched most of the MSU-Weber game and WSU would have lost had they not been given so many free throws...they are a good team and will be favored over UM, but if MSU can get them on the ropes, UM can.problem is UM is foul prone and the MSU game showed that Weber is going to be rewarded because, well, because....

Looks like the opening line is Weber by 4. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't by more....

This should be a great game. You have two teams who are both pretty hot right now, and some of the best talent in the Big Sky on the court at the same time. There aren't many teams out there who wouldn't want Lillard, Bamforth, Cherry and Jamar on their team!

The Purple palace is a tough venue, but the Griz alrady are guaranteed a road split so the pressure is on Weber to win at home. If the Griz play with confidence and shoot the ball like they have they most certainly have a shot. You are not going to stop Lilliard, but you cannot let the rest of them have huge nights too.

THIS!

This has already been a successful road trip for Montana. Weebs has all the pressure in this game.

Tinkle's pregame talk should be a pretty easy one these days, rather it be on the road, or at home. "Keep doing what we have been doing, and take care of the ball."

Seriously, the GRIZ are playing some AWESOME ball, and on both ends of the court the past month. Scary part is, they are only getting better. I hope the GRIZ can continue find minutes for the young guys. The NAU game could not have gone better for the GRIZ.

A fresher, than expected GRIZ team will certainly help against Weber State.

I agree, Rule. I'll admit to being a little down on this team early in the year, when they weren't shooting well, and seemingly led the known world in fouls. But even then, they were playing lights-out D, and now that the offense has come together and everyone looks more comfortable in the offensive flow, it's been mighty fun to watch. If they can continue to get improved play from Hutch (and get Reader back), this team has a huge upside.
