Missoulians Dillon K

I am not convinced that Hauck is the preferred candidate for head coach, but this piece is a clear hatchet job. It demonstrates why the Missoulian (and other Lee newspapers) do not deserve patronage in any respect.

We must remember that Ms. Florio returned to the Missoulian last year as city editor. I cancelled my subscription to the Missoulian in 2012 when this article appeared on the front page above the fold:

http://missoulian.com/news/local/griz-sports-forum-turns-vulgar-in-wake-of-sexual-assault/article_fd9c03ac-aeb5-11e1-9cdf-001a4bcf887a.html

I don't blame Ms. Florio for being sensitive to attacks on eGriz, but it did not deserve front-page treatment in the Missoulian. She had taken a stand in print against certain Griz players and the team. Sometimes you are attacked when you take a strong, public stand. But that does not mean you should validate the crudeness of message board Neanderthals on the front page of a newspaper. Ms. Florio demonstrated poor judgment in her 2012 article about eGriz. It appeared to be an unfair attack on this message board, based upon selective treatment of some posters who had exhibited poor taste in attacking her. Sounds more like a grudge than reporting.

Ms. Florio's approach seems to permeate Mr. Kato's article today, perhaps because of Ms. Florio's role as city editor, though the specific target is different. It's a grudge, not news. Mr. Kato's article seeks to validate unfair attacks on Hauck, who left UM after the 2009 season. Hauck was not perfect, but he cannot be fairly criticized for failing to regulate behavior of athletes after he left for UNLV. The reference to comments by Pat Williams is beyond the pale.

I suggest boycotting the Missoulian and other Lee newspapers. And let advertisers in those papers know that you don't appreciate sensationalist hatchet jobs. It may not make a difference, but it might, and it feels good to let the purveyors of crap know we don't like this shit.

Wow. How eager do you think these guys were to dick up all the dirt on Hauck? Unbelievable...

And news flash, Dillon... Hauck wasn't the coach in 2010, 2011, or 2013. Does anyone think the media will blame Stitt if any of his recruits get into trouble with the law? You bet your ass they're going to full-blown lay it on Hauck as "his fault".

Who is Dillon K?

There goes Amie's access to info from the athletic department.

Jimmy Wilson. Really? He was acquitted, essentially twice, allowed back to UM, drafted, and played in the NFL for years. With no problems. The bitting incident was total BS.

Tim Parks. I thought the charge was BS and dropped, contrary to what the article said, but don''t know for sure.

Quinn's second dui charge that was mentioned was dropped.

Freeman went to trial for the beer bottle thing and was acquitted, as the article said at the en

Yup, house burglary was bad, but those guys never played again and were gone.

Yup, 3 drunk frosh punched a kid, but they also never played again and were gone.

This was over a 7 year period.

The Kaimin thing was virtually nothing.

Pat Williams is senile and was run out of the BOR.

And bringing up stuff that occurred years after Hauck was already at UNLV?

Any good reporter would check on what happened with players when Hauck was at UNLV.

Dillon is going to make himself too popular with UM with articles like this.

This why Bobby Hauck is a risky hire for UM, or at the very least a polarizing hire. Fair or not, this article represents Bobby Hauck to a lot of Missoulians that are not football fans. We, as football fans, follow the team and follow players after these events occur. The vast majority of Montanans and alumni likely only read the headlines and form opinions based a snap judgment. The risk is alienating a lot residents and alumni who are not football fans and DO get their news from the Missoulian.

I fear that a Hauck hire could be a PR disaster for UM at a critical moment in its history. It sounds like it’s as good as done, so I hope I’m wrong...but it could be bumpy ride.

Been saying it all year. You are absolutely spot on. Hope it doesn't happen, but I'm guessing IF he is hired, there will be a sizeable uproar from Missouians (and the Missoulian). Public perception is KING in 2017....

There has always been a population of people who don't like the attention the football team gets and thinks they get away with anything because they are football players. Bad press due to bad behavior certainly increases their disdain as well as embarrasses and disappoints those who enjoy the football team. Bobby had behavior problems with some of his players for sure but so does every coach. Bobby may have had more than some coaches and he didnt always handle it the way many people would have liked. I dont think he is an idiot nor the jerk some would like to make him out to be and I do think he, like all coaches, will try to limit bad behavior and try to react to it the best way possible. He will protect his players as well and will need to find a balance between discipline, public/media relations and protecting his players and fielding a winning football team that can meet the athletic expectations of the fans, boosters and admin if this university.

Unless he isnt hired and its Kane in 2018! :D

This is hilariously irresponsible. Good job, Dillon.
What is? The story or all of the examples cited in the article? Most of you seem to forget (or are just ignorant of) the off field issues that took place under Hauck. I hope the Schnozz gets rehired. This ought to be fun.

The parts he included between 2010 and 2013 when Hauck was long gone from this place. Like, why would he include Jordan Johnson, Hauck had nothing to do with that guy.

Thing is, when it comes to Griz athletics, and especially the football team, nothing gets by the Missoulian. Nothing. They will milk every last drop of information to make a headline in BIG BOLD LETTERS on the front page.

It isn't going to be any different with a coach other than Hauck. If something happens, regardless of how severe they will most certainly sensationalize it. No passes here.

How to solve the problem? Do what you can to recruit players with good values and do your best as coaches and mentors to keep their asses out of trouble.

Bobby gets hired, a year or two goes by with minimal incidents (there is always some...under Stitt, under Choat) we start winning, get back to selling out the stadium and people tend to forget.

It's only going to be a bumpy ride if there's trouble, it doesn't matter who the HC is.

No need to get negative about Mr. Kato, he's a reporter. Leave him alone. Bringing negativity to him will only embolden those who still think the Griz and their fans are just "thugs." He reported it, now leave it up to others to interpret. Or write your own piece explaining your views and submit it to the Missoulian.

I can't find anything about Jordan Johnson in his article. Was it updated?

Who gives 2 shits about non fans that it might make mad? It pisses me off florio is employed by the school, and yet there she is. It pisses me off that she is still at the paper, and yet there she is. Just because I won’t throw a snowflake fit and block traffic doesn’t mean my feelings shouldn’t be considered. You can’t make decisions on how some people feel. Will they withhold their money? Nope, they’re the same ones that bitched about private donations earmarked for the champions center didn’t get spread equally across the school. Why would they do that? An overwhelming opinion of how important they think they are. Wouldn’t life be great if we all got what wanted because it’s fair? Life’s not fair, nut up buttercup.

I think the worst case scenario is something like Tennessee is experiencing right now, where there is an immediate reaction to the news of an offer being made. I hope that Haslam is working with Paula Short and the communications office to get out ahead of a lot of questions or potentially any larger reaction.

Feel free to point out the "negative" about Mr. Kato. You can't back up what you just said, because there was nothing negative. Unlike what Mr. Kato wrote, which has mistakes, what I wrote about him is factual and from his Facebook and Twitter.

I already wrote my own "piece" for egriz. Mr. Kato is welcome to do his own piece on egriz defending his piece.

Disagree. Mr. Kato needs to have standards, and be accurate. He should be accountable for biased or inaccurate reporting.

Letters to the editor are useless if the paper won't acknowledge its own bias or inaccuracy, and may only serve to help the Missoulian sell more papers.

You sharing information about Mr. Kato carries an undertone of negativity. You are only interested in him because he shared (some bad, some accurate) information about past teams. I do not like that it was done. I wish he hadn't, and I hope fans see past the bias. But....focusing on him will only make Griz fans look bad.
