Mike Chavez

Is it just me or does Chavez need to be playing at least 20min. a game. He does nothing but produce when he is in the game. He is the most productive player on the team vs. pts. and reb's per minute. He is prone to not moving his feet and getting into foul trouble, but then he gets benched and doesn't see the floor again. Why don't they just let him foul out while still producing. I'm really getting sick of seeing his talent getting wasted away. He has paid his dues and has been punished enough, let him play!

Paid his dues and been punished enough? Thats an interesting way to put it I guess. In a major Division I program he would have been gone a long time ago. That's beside the point. He is a productive but it's obvious Tinkle is playing with the lineup in order to find a good fit. BTW- Strait is the most productive player on the team.

I too am a Chavez fan, especially after all he has overcome. Unfortunately for Mike his best positions are PF and SF where we are loaded at. Strait is our best offensive player and Dloughy is by far our best defender. Add into the equation Chavez, Chase, Hasquet, Sharp all being able to play 2 positions, and Swift at the 3 sometimes. Playing time is Tinks most difficult part of his job and adding in it is his 1st year in charge makes it more difficult.

This evidenced by all the controversy and opinions alone at EGRIZ. We have egrizzers calling for more PT for Chase and Chavez, others such as myself that see so much potential in Hasquet. From a mismatch stand point I think Chavez and Hasquet present the most mismatches. Nobody here can argue the importance of Dloughy and Strait though. What is a coach to do ?

Fortunately for the coaching staff, Mike is a class act and will do whatever asked whenever asked. GO GRIZ!!!!!

Chavez was held out one game for reasons Tinks did not want to make public. He gave us great minutes the last game and will make an impact this season. I like the way he passes in the paint, and he has a knack of scoring the ball against bigger defenders.

I got the impression Chavez was being punished tonight for some reasons. Getting put in the last 2 minutes of a blowout is an insult. I agree with those who'd like to see him get more of a chance--he seems to be a more consistent scorer than just about anyone other than Strait.

Chavez seems like he has always been the spark that has ignited the griz. I wouldn't start him, but he deserves/earned more minutes.

44 minutes, 28 points, 13 boards.

That is Chavez points, rebounds to minutes so far this year, minus the Scrimmage and Utah Valley State. That is great production. Let's see what he can do with 20 plus minutes. He should average 13.5 pts, and 6.5 boards in 20 minutes. Those are all conference numbers. He also shot over 40% from 3 last year.

What is going on in behind the scenes? What is keeping him off the court?

I was curious how productive he has been based on many egrizzers thinking he should play more. As it turns out, indeed he has been very productive and I feel deserves to be on the court more. How much of a difference would he make?

After finally watching the Griz, following the stats and listenning to them on the radio, i would say that Chavez needs to start.

Ellis
Dloughy (although i'm dissapointed in his play thus far to be honest)
Chavez
Hasquet
Strait

If the 3-4 spots are loaded, then go with it. Start 2 four men and 2 three men.

I have to reflect back to the year the Griz signed Chavez. All we heard was that this signing was the biggest coup (no pun intended) in the history of Grizzly BB. Posters were stating that Chavez was the best high school player to ever come out of Montana. They were saying how Gonzaga wanted Chavez so badly they were peeing all over themselves trying to sign Mike. Yet, in the end, we got him.

While I understand the many problems Mike has had, these should not have taken away his BB ability. Yet, he has never been able to crack the starting lineup at Montana, let alone be the second coming as many posters back then predicted for him.

If I know anything about the game of BB, and I think I do, Chavez possesses skills which the rest of the Griz players do not. He is by far the best passer on the team. He is also the best pure shooter on the team. He has very good inside moves, second only to Straight. He is one of the few Griz who can create a shot.

Will he play defense? Who knows. I see no reason why he is not capable of playing good defense.

Bottom line is that the Griz need his offensive production, and he should be playing alot, if not starting.

I like that starting lineup listed above.

Ellis - Great passer & defender. Not a scorer, but gets the ball to the scorers, like a PG should.
Dlouhy - Create some matchup problems at the 2 with his size (in the Big Sky nayway). 40% 3 point shooter so far this year. Athletic, and a very good defender. 3 point shooting and perimeter defense is where the Griz are REALLY struggling this year.

Do you start Chavez at the 3 or 4? If you start him at the 4, do you move Hasquet to the 3? Is Hasquet quick enough to play the 3? Either way, you gotta get Chavez some more minutes, and I'd honestly start him. He's too good of a weapon to have sitting on the bench. Besides Criswell & Matthews last year, Chavez was the only other Griz to shoot above 40% from 3 point range (of course he only took 19 shots from 3). Hasquet right now is struggling with his outside shot (1-10), so it'd probably be best to start Chavez at the 3 where he'd hopefully get more looks from 3.

I'm not giving up on Chase or Martin, or any of the other Griz players yet. Martin is struggling, that's for sure. Chase isn't getting many minutes. He is fairly productive when he's in though and does rebound very well. He's also very physical underneath. We have to remember with these new players like Chase, they may start out fairly slowly & not get a lot of minutes......look at Matthews and his first year. He didn't play much at first (sharing time with Lynch), and then at the end of his first year when he started getting decent minutes, he was great & a team leader his senior year along with Criswell.
