The Mid Major Poll is sort of a schizoid raver's rating of sorts... kind of like voting for this week's cutest cheerleaders (and you know how quickly the commenters over at the Griz football polls forget last week's sweetest smiles!!!). At best the Mid Major poll's got a three-week lag that merely reflects the popularity based jockeying for which teams might be good fits for the College Insider post-season tourney (which sponsors the Mid Major Poll).
Better gauges are the Sagarin Rankings http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkt1112.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that have Montana currently at 123 (compared to Weber at 93 & Eastern at 108), or the volatile but very "early breaking" RPI-based rankings from Team Rankings http://www.teamrankings.com/ncb/rpi/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that have the Griz at 74 (EWU-94; WSU-109). Now THAT'S a bounce from our win over Long Beach State!
The best season-long performer from last season in my book, however, was the Ken Pomeroy Rankings http://kenpom.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The KenPom point spread predictions on Griz games last season were uncanny. If the KenPom rankings are as accurate this season, then I like where it currently has the Griz situated... at 119 compared to Weber State's 123 and EWU's 156.
Won't be easy for the Griz, cause San Francisco and particularly Oregon State will be very tough tests.
In the final analysis, all the rankings are simply good fun that means nothing, really, when the teams hit the floor.
