mid major poll

Uh, in case you forgot, we lost to a very average North Dakota. That will hurt the GRIZ in the mid major poll at least until ND has a good conference season. Right now, that is a bad loss. I will be pulling for North Dakota all season now.

Should the Griz handle the next three teams, they will be on the mid major poll, but, ND was a bad loss. San Francisco and Oregon State are key games...Long Beach was a pre lim....Somebody at UM made a very good schedule for the year.

Yet, we still heard some bitching about the schedule. I like the schedule. I sure hope in Cherry's Sr year, we have some tougher games. This will be a much more talented team with experience next year. This year the SR's are experienced, but overall, not as talented.

Weber is leading St. Mary's at the half MSU is leading San Jose....Montana beating Long Beach..all these are good for Big Sky placement in the tourney...Maybe, the conference is beginning that long sought improvement?

Thought they might at least get some votes after LBSU, but I guess not. Good thing is that they have a chance for more quality wins this week.

The Mid Major Poll is sort of a schizoid raver's rating of sorts... kind of like voting for this week's cutest cheerleaders (and you know how quickly the commenters over at the Griz football polls forget last week's sweetest smiles!!!). At best the Mid Major poll's got a three-week lag that merely reflects the popularity based jockeying for which teams might be good fits for the College Insider post-season tourney (which sponsors the Mid Major Poll).

Better gauges are the Sagarin Rankings http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkt1112.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that have Montana currently at 123 (compared to Weber at 93 & Eastern at 108), or the volatile but very "early breaking" RPI-based rankings from Team Rankings http://www.teamrankings.com/ncb/rpi/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that have the Griz at 74 (EWU-94; WSU-109). Now THAT'S a bounce from our win over Long Beach State!

The best season-long performer from last season in my book, however, was the Ken Pomeroy Rankings http://kenpom.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The KenPom point spread predictions on Griz games last season were uncanny. If the KenPom rankings are as accurate this season, then I like where it currently has the Griz situated... at 119 compared to Weber State's 123 and EWU's 156.

Won't be easy for the Griz, cause San Francisco and particularly Oregon State will be very tough tests.

In the final analysis, all the rankings are simply good fun that means nothing, really, when the teams hit the floor.

that is so true..but it recognition is always welcome when you are not one of the elite...Yes, the next two games for UM are going to determine how good this team is....Last year, the Griz should have beaten SF but lost in the closing minutes...they will be facing the same team...all five starters from last year are back....Oregon State is a surprise this year and looks solid....UM handled them last year because of Qvale and Cherry, so the Griz have an uphill climb there. Without a big guy, UM is going to have to rely on Cherry and Jamar more and Hutchinson is going to be tested....it would be great to have two wins here......depends upon who shows a hot hand....

Just watched Weber fold in the second half....blown out..Lillard is a good player but I hope they play like this when the Griz meet them...The Weber coach seems to have thrown in the towel at two minutes+..wholesale subs....they were down 13....UM can take these guys.....

You are right in that rankings are fun to look at and dissect, but ultimately obviously it all comes down to the play on the floor. For my money, nobody is better than Ken Pomeroy. Love his stuff, and if there is any analyst whose numbers I really take stock in, it is his.
