MD

The current ass-hat notwithstanding, I actually like the fact that university presidents are the highest paid public employees in the state, rather than a football coach like many.

What I don't like about this move is that the UM and their administration is rewarding just making the playoffs. I am not saying that I don't think Mick is the man for the job or that he can't lead us to a National Championship, but with this move it is giving the impression that solely making the playoffs is enough for this program. I think all coaches, players and fans would agree that this is the case, so why is the administration on board?

Yup I was pissed every time Bobbys contract was extended. He too was a total screw up, made the playoffs and then did nothing. What the hell were they thinking...

You are an idiot.

I just hope we don't get in the habit of these 1 year extensions. Leaves a lot of uncertainity for the coach, assistant coaches, current players, and recruits. Lets have a plan!

NDSU signed Bohl to an 8-year contract extension through 2021, with a base salary this year of $206,000.

UM needs to get real.

The Regents will never give the UM Football coach $300,000 per year until such time as they are willing, and can afford to pay the MSU Football coach the same. You may not like it, but that is the way things are done.

Can the school tack on pretty much any incentive that they want, or is that limited by the BOR/state legislature also?

The Regents need to step out of the way and stop micromanaging. The schools need to have the discretion make these decisions. Restrictions on contract length through BOR policy is a case in point.

Good points bDiz, but I think this is evidence that UM's plan is still to win games and recover from the controversy. There is no assistant coach that is super-ready to be the Head coach.

I have not always liked some of the football decisions of this staff, but I am so grateful to Mick for what he did for this program the past 2 years. He helped right the ship. Players seem to really respect the heck out of him. Regardless of the contract, I would like to thank Mick for coming out of retirement and stepping into the storm that was Grizzly football at the time. I also don't think you can underestimate what he has done for Canada to get him in the right direction both on and off the football field.

this is right on by grizatwork....I also believe we will have an exit strategy when m.d. leaves....

I would be really happy with just this extension. It's fair after his tremendous effort. We return a lot of talent and JJ has one more year, which Mick deserves to see through to a potential championship. Our prospects would be very favorable.

This is about what I was thinking. Mick and the team earned him another year. It gives us time to find a replacement. Also it keeps JJ with the same coaching staff for his SR year which will be a huge year. The other qbs are a combination of pocket passers and spread QB's. With that, it will allow a search for a coach for either type of offense.

This outcome really does make sense for all parties. Congrats Mick

Good coach and more importantly a good man. He forgot more about football than the combined membership of this entire board. Good for him, he has worked very hard for this.

Did he play the game though? :thumb:

Say what you want, but the facts are he took over the helm at the worst time in Griz football history and got the boys through it. He's 10-2 this year and we're looking at making a run in the playoffs. He flat-out deserves the extension.

This. I don't want UM to become one of those unstable programs that let's winning coaches go because they didn't win the NC every year or two. Much as I would love to, that ain't happening. MD has done everything we could have realistically hoped for in these past two seasons. Anyone tells you 10-2 isn't good hasn't looked at our actual records over the past 20 years. Very few seasons with 2 or less wins despite our playoff successes.

No doubt. Well-deserved, and great job getting this done.

Well here is one way to look at it. He is old enough if he keeps on winning a year or two it is unlikely he will bail for another program (bigger and more $.) Am I wrong?

Coming off a 5-6 season and missing the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years, not to mention the shit storm that was encountered, I see no problem with the thinking to reward a 10-2 playoff season. I understand the questions people have about MD, but based on the results, it is not a out-of-the-question move.

Have to agree, he got the ship turned around, no big discipline issues and they seem to have recruited well. I've been a critic of game plans like many, but I'm not a coach (I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express a couple years ago  )

You have to figure sometime soon Mick will want to kick back with his family and play some golf and go fishing, if he wants to coach another year no big deal, he's earned that after this year.

Well congratulations to MD and the 1 year extension. I see one of two things happening this next year.

1: At a mid point through the season MD will indicate he will be retiring end of 2014 season and a current coach named as next head coach in line. This allows for a bit more stable position and not an unknown coach and staff change. Solid idea if we have the right person in the ranks.

2: Or this off season we see a new person brought onto the staff as an assistant head coach. Again would allow for a smoother transition and show a little better stability.

I know we have talked about a national search when the time comes but that may have more negative impact than good at this time. At least if we go from within just this next time it might work best. Maybe get another 2 to 5 years of winning season to be back on track so to speak. At that point if needed we do the "national" search.
