he's a good guy and you can't dis him too much for the problems he had at Tech. He had too take over for a guy who the players hated and had a drinking problem to boot. Green is a great football coach but, was not a great AD and Bauer for not having any head coaching expience did the best job he could. He has been very supportive of Tech ever since he left and I think that speaks volumes for his character and grants him a 2nd chance. :twocents:

Good Guy? Good guys don't stab their bosses (Rick Dessing) in the back, especially a boss that gave him his first job out of college. Trust me, there is no head coach in any program (let alone D1) worth his weight that'll ever hire Mike Bauer as their assistant....not to mention his teams played as undisciplined of basketball that I have ever seen.

I'd also like to see the proof of Dessing's so-called drinking problem. He is a great guy, and a fantastic basketball coach. Ask Brad Huse what kind of coach Dess is?

yes i agree. dessing was a good HC, the team hated him because he tried to instill law and order on that ballclub

It's pretty hard to respect somebody who doesn't hold themsleves to the same standard thay are enforcing upon you. There is not a player in the world that would ever respect a coach that did that. Hence why Brian Marso might get canned and why Dessing got canned.

Alright this thread is getting old. How about this for taking a left turn, what quality(s) would you like see in the coach who will replace Marso?

A minority coach?
A Montana guy?
A JC recruiter?
A defensive wizard?
A young up and comer?


A guy who can recruit outside the state of Washington? (that was a joke)

I for one would love to get a good teacher, seasoned hardnosed veteran with some connections in either the midwest, southeast, or northeast to add to our recruiting base some. Ties to either FL, TX, IN, OH, MI, or NY would be great. Is there any veteran coaches out there ready to retire and live a simple life in Montana? (Bob Knight? Joking). IF we want a Bob Knight type fire, go out and see if John Morrison would be interested coming out of retirement. (I know many here are not familar with him, but he was a very good JC coach with ALOT of discipline and creativity.) Young or old they have to bring alot of discipline, defense, and rebounding principles that need to be taught.

As for someone with GRIZ ties. There are a few I wonder about.
I wish Kevin Criswell had desire to coach. If he did, he in my opinion would be an ideal young coach to groom. Is the Christiansen kid coaching anywhere? Is Roger Fastings coaching somewhere? Doug Selvig? Seriously, what former GRIZ are coaching with any desire to come back? I would love to see Michael Ray be given a shot too. I have a feeling that would really be controversial though in GRIZNATION.

I wonder if Paul Dumas would consider an assistant coaching position.

No. California, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Utah, Montana, and the other western states are ideal for UM, not a part of the country that is probably not familiar with Montana. I like where we are recruiting. When that kid from the Bronx played for ISU a few years ago I thought it was rediculous. The kid probably had very little information about Pocatello and I would imagine did not fit in. We have had our share of kids be successful from the East, but I think we are better off recruiting where we are currently.

I think it is a numbers game, and we already recruit regionally well enough. Some other ties never hurt a program. Even keeping it to the midwest like IN, IA, IL, NE, MO would be of great help. Those areas are not any further to recruit than AZ and CA (central and southern). As someone who lived in Omaha for a decade, there is plenty of talent there and sioux city that goes unnoticed. Boys basketball in IOWA and Nebraska is much better than in this region.


Other than Seattle and Northern California, the midwest has more talent to find and draw from than WY, NE, UT, ID, MT, NM. AZ is very solid though. Getting a midwest pipeline certainly would be helpful.
