MSU Bobcat women get shut-out by #1 Stanford in the first quarter. :? 20-0

OMG! How humiliating.

What is humiliating is that the Cats were the teams that won both the men’s and women’s championship and they both get totally smoked. Doesn’t say much for the Big Sky as a whole. Texas Tech is the best defensive team in the Country. Today they also shot lights out. Almost 67 percent for the game. And, you can see why Stanford women are a number 1 seed.

The Baylor v. UNC game was terrific. Baylor came back from being down about 25 with 10 minutes to go, and them lost in OT.

I don't view any of this as humiliating. Humiliating would be a top seed getting crushed by a low see. Congrats to Cat women and men.

Yep, an amazing game.

Counts as an "upset," since UNC was seeded #8. However, that suggests a lack of flexibility in the selection committee ... unable (or unwilling) to acknowledge the way the Tarheels seemed to "gel" toward the end of the regular season: 7-1 record, including the win at Duke.

Creighton gave Kansas quite a tussle, and even had it down to one point late. Then the Jayhawks pulled away. Would have been amazing if two 1-seeds had gone down back-to-back. Of course, there's still Gonzaga this evening. Memphis was on quite a run (6 wins) before Houston pounded them in the conference championship game.

Crazy day. Three lower seeds won, including, of course, North Carolina over Baylor. So picking by the numbers turned out to be a bad strategy. Sigh.

Gonzaga has finally taken the lead, but they are not exactly dominating, so it could get worse.

Edit: Gonzaga did win the game against Memphis (a #9 seed), by 82-78. So they'll be in the Sweet Sixteen, but their performance does not give one a "warm fuzzy feeling."

A passing comment during the Houston-Illinois game got me to wondering: Basically … who’s left?

First, only one team from a one-bid conference is left … 15-seed Saint Peters from the Metro Atlantic (they who knocked off 2-seed Kentucky).

But here’s something closer to home. For the first time in like a decade, the MWC got four bids to the Big Dance. That included a 6-seed, two 8-seeds, and a 12-seed. Way to go! Great! … right?

Well, not so great. Despite several legitimate chances, they did not win even one game. That does not improve the league’s chance to get that many bids in the future, no matter how good they may look on paper. Here's one relevant opinion:

I see TD and his philosophy in the mold of the MWC. IMO, this philosophy can win a team many games but won't win a lot of big games.

Wow! Disastrous day for the Big Ten. The committee handed them nine bids ... and the most that will make it to the Sweet Sixteen is two. Even that is not a given: Purdue (a 3-seed) is favored over Texas (a 6-seed), but we've already had bigger upsets than that.

Not so hot for the SEC, either. Another 2-seed (Auburn) bit the dust, falling to 10-seed Miama (FL) by 18 points. That means just one of the six SEC teams makes it through the first weekend and into the Sweet Sixteen. Ouch!

Other than my Championship game, my bracket is dead.
A lot of dead brackets out there, I would imagine. This year, we lost a 1-seed, two 2-seeds, and two 3-seeds. You have to go back to 2017 to find anything even close. And you have to go back a decade to find as many surviving teams (four) with seeds of #10 or higher: We have a 10-seed, two 11-seeds, and a 15-seed. Typically over the last four or five years, we ended up with just one “Cinderella” high seed (usually an 11 or 12).

A fun fact to know: This year’s Cinderella, Saint Peter’s, is located in Jersey City. That’s about 75 miles from Philadelphia, where their game with Purdue will be played. Aside from the usual fans who back underdogs, the Peacocks are apt to draw every basketball fan in the state of New Jersey.

Some more fun facts from this (fairly long) article:
https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/...saint-peter-peacocks-attracting-notable-bets
2022 March Madness Betting bullets: Underdog Saint Peter's Peacocks attracting notable bets

Caesars Sportsbook said it took a $100,000 money-line bet on Saint Peter's at +320 against Murray State, resulting in one of the bookmaker's worst results of the opening rounds. "We never learned our lesson on how much the bettors love the Cinderella story," Craig Mucklow, director of trading for Caesar Sportsbook, said.

But while bets on Saint Peter's are popping up around the nation, there's one state where the Peacocks are nowhere to be found at sportsbooks -- their home state of New Jersey. New Jersey prohibits its licensed sportsbooks from accepting wagers on games involving in-state colleges and universities. Saint Peter's is located in Jersey City.
...
Aside from all the online sportsbooks, Jersey City is basically a half hour subway ride from New York City. So good luck with that last bit. :P

My sentiments exactly! :thumb:

Another fun fact: Bird people describe the peacock as an "aggressive, fiercely territorial bird" that will attack anyone who intrudes on their space. So ... Go Peacocks!
