Because there is not one to offer would be the most obvious. Secondly, and people won't like this, but I think he must prove to be a D1 player.

Fair enough on the scholarship issue. But prove himself? You've got to be blind to this kid's talents. As far as I'm concerned he's already proved himself with mind-boggling stats, a crazy good handle and two high school championships. We all bitch that Montana can't produce D1 talent, such that when it does we just can't believe it.

Hey, LA griz. Have a look at his YouTube highlights. That handle, those passes--just beautiful. It might take him some time to adjust to a higher level, just as it did for Timmy Falls. But he will. My words are marked right here.

You do realize that the Griz have a Montana kid that will come in on scholarship each of the next 2 years. In Malatare's situation, first there is not one available, and second, there is zero reason for the Griz to offer, he is going to walk-on and has no other D1 offers.

Ah, yes, I "do realize."

But anybody who says Malatare has to prove himself will one day look as foolish as the Minnesota Timberwolves, who took two point guards ahead of Steph Curry because they didn't think the only unanimous MVP in the history of the league was good enough to play in the NBA. I'm just trying to save you a similar embarrassment.

Don't, because I think the Griz will be lucky if 1 of the 3 Montana kids over the next couple recruiting season works out, and I am leaning towards zero. Also, I guess that I would be as foolish as every single other D1 school that did not offer....which of course is all.

Why a walk-on? Just give him a scholarship! He's got the best left hand I've seen since Steph Curry, not to mention a now legendary Montana legacy.

I think Phillip Malatare has a higher ceiling than a Kirk Walker did out of Darby not that long ago. Well, not according to 'my' not too long ago. Looks good. With a couple years of maturity, I think the Griz would be glad to have him.

I am watching right now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv1C6Eas-3I

Well, THAT was fun!

The GRIZ could get a hidden treasure but would he wait for a couple of years to get playing time.

He has an offer with the griz it’s only a walk on , but without that offer he wouldn’t have the chance to do that! Arlee doesn’t win back to back state championships without him!

He would redshirt as a true freshman. After the 2018/19 season the GRIZ will lose Rorie and Oguine to graduation. The GRIZ play as many as 4 guards at a time. Espe is the only other true PG to compete with. Pridgett will likely remain as a SG/SF. Falls is a true combo guard.

If DeCuire remains coach, or Cobb takes over there will be ample playing time available among guards. What will it hurt, if Malatare goes for it? It's not often the GRIZ have a small town local boy walk on. He's already legendary in Arlee hoops. Imagine how legendary he becomes if he earns a scholarship and is a contributing player on the GRIZ? He just might be just what Montana hoops needs to better the talent throughout the state. I am sure it would motivate many small town players to strive to be a DIV 1 player. Both the GRIZ and Cats would benefit by it too.

Selvig. Wetzel. Criswell. Chavez. Krysko was Shelby really. The Griz have had some great small school athletes from Montana.

Don't get me started on track and field.

Don't get me started on football players (and coaches--Selvig and Hauck).

Pretty impressive but he looks small and the competition not that great but he has moves and can shoot. I wonder what his percentages are. It would be great to have a home grown talent that is not much of a show boat type player that T. Falls was showing earlier in the season.

I believe Worster does not arrive until the 2020-2021 season. Currently he is a sophomore. :thumb:

Falls too much of a show boat? I knew I didn't like you, thanks for solidifying it.

Glad to oblige. Now, if you would improve your reading comprehension......

Also remember Riley Bradshaw having the same concerns about his abilities coming out of high school. Took a shot at Utah State and UM but while he's a great kid, when given the chance he was just a step below the out of state guys. Gotta get the chance though to prove himself so I'm all for it...good luck to Mr Malatare.

It can actually be read either way, implying he is one, but now I absolutely I see what you were meaning and that's my bad for jumping on your ass.

I’ve been talking about this kid for years. He has dominated at camps and has back to back Class C championships which is about the hardest chipper in all of Montana high school sports. I had heard he was going to Tech but I’m glad to hear he will walk on. This kid is a big time baller.

I agree! His picture is in the Urban Dictionary beside "Gym Rat." Let's get some Rez Ball going again! Bozeangeles won't unless they leave the Rez and that's on them.

Anyone who doesn't see the absolute insane potential in this kid should stop watching hoops. He is the best player in the state all classes, and I'm not sure it's even close. His coach, Zanen Pitts says Malatare could put up 50 points per night if he wanted but he's a TEAM player first. He loves dishing the rock and rebounding and playing defense. He averages almost a triple double....that's insane. If he was 2-3 inches taller he is a PAC 12 talent. Being 6' (maybe 5'11) will keep his talents here in MT. I hope he lands at UM. If an NAIA team gets him it's a steal.

Weird question but plays into the schollie....because he's Native American do they get a break or free tuition anyways. If so, maybe that is why a walk on is very doable. I apologize if that question seems insensitive but I really don't know the answer.

I think he is Hooked. My kid grew up playing some traveling ball with him and I am quite sure he is a tribal member. He’s a good kid from a good family.

Oh yes I believe he is for sure....I was more wondering if those kids get a big break on tuition or even free tuition so that a scholarship becomes a moot point.

It is my understanding that tuition (only) is covered for Native Americans. The FAFSA form has a provision there. Tribal members from any US protectorate get this.

Awesome news report/story below. Great Great Kid. Sure hope he is a Griz

Just a note in his last three years Arlee took 2nd, 1st and 1st in state.
