major blunder?

i'm as happy as anybody for the win tonight at sac state but the major emerging story for me this season is the lack of playing time for qvale--one minute at bozeman, six at northern arizona, none tonight. arguably the most talented center recruit at montana in years, and we blow off a redshirt year so he can spectate from a front row seat side aisle?

i simply don't get it--either you have the confidence to play him and tolerate freshman mistakes, or you redshirt him. the staff can't have known everything in advance, but if this goes on, they will have made a huge blunder in talent evaluation, and cost us a valuable player and potentially great year down the road. i'm on record as saying we lack a three and a point guard, and am willing to tolerate what may turn out to me a mediocre year, but the emerging bad judgment on qvale just discourages the hell out of me.

A post like this is lame. You can look at every single coach and second guess decisions they have made. It may be a play, or offensive system, or why did that guy play, or why did that guy not play, etc, but the coach is making the decisions he thinks necessary to win games. Many of these coaches probably second quess decisions, but they along with the rest of us have to live with it, just like you have to live with the decisions you make, good or bad. You just have to remind yourself that he was making what he felt was the best decision at the time, and with a couple kids leaving, etc, he may have been forced to use a kid that he might not have used.

The Griz only played 7 players tonight. This won't and probably can't continue. The fact that sac was small and quick has a lot to do with it. I think Qvale will be back next game.

I don't know if I would have played him tonight either. Hasquet, Strait, and Sharp did a nice job, and frankly, the SAC interior guys were pretty darn athletic. I think Qvale would have struggled tonight. I wouldn't condemn Tinks 3 games into the BSC season city. I think Tinks did a great job with personnel moves tonight to be honest. :twocents:

I don't think Qvale was a good fit for the game tonight. He struggled against NAU Thursday night. But generally I agreed. Tinkle really blew it by not getting Qvale a lot more minutes earlier in the season when the Griz were way ahead or way behind. He needed minutes in order to build some confidence and experience. And from the way the guards have struggled at times--at leasst til tonite--I've wondered why Graves hasn't earned a little playing time. Is he in the dog house, or just not that good?

I haven't seen him play enough to have an opinion, so I am assuming that his practices aren't earning him the minutes. He has Martin, Stads, Rundles, and CET ahead of him, so minutes are kind of tough to get for a freshman. He was not sitting on the bench pouting, in fact he was smiling and supporting his teammates, as was Qvale, and VJ.

Speaking of Qvale and Vanderjagt, what teams do you think we will need them in. Based on what I have heared, I am guessing they will be needed against PSU and EWU in particular. Beyond that I have no idea. I too have been disappointed in Qvale not seeing playing time in a few games. As for the Sac game, I think Tinkle made all the right decisions regarding personnel and playing time. For awhile I was beginning to wonder if he would get Rundles equal playing time with Martin and CET. Those 2 did everything guards/leaders are expected to do. Granted, Rundles did well too, but I am glad Tinkle stuck to what was working best. I hope Tinkle continues to do go with whatever combination is doing the most good.

However, would like to see GRAVES on nights when the Regulars are out of sync.

If he hasn't played him very much this season then it's waste for the kid. He's talented and if he's not ready then red-shirt him instead of wasting a season. Bad move on the staffs part and hopefully the kid sticks around and doesn't transfer, which typically happens in these situations.

True Freshman not getting a lot of floor time, typically do not transfer. Entering the season, the Griz had 3 healthy post players besides Qvale, and one of them was ticketed to play some 3 as well. Vanderjagt was not healthy when the season started and also was unproven. I am sure this was a big part of the decision not to redshirt Qvale and it is understandable. I think he will play some big and improtant minutes as the season progresses. :thumb:

What's the basis for this statement:

"...and hopefully the kid sticks around and doesn't transfer, which typically happens in these situations."

Players don't typically transfer if they don't redshirt and don't play much. n recent history, I can only think of one UM non-redshirt who decided to transfer.
