Locker Rooms...

I'm sorry, but with how much revenue the athletic programs produce you'd think the university would take care of the locker room & weight room situation. Absolutely ridiculous.
They steal from the AD so the AD has to go outside for donations. Has worked so far. The more we give, the more they will steal.

Also Royce's firings of Pflu and ODay plus their severance pay came out of athletics budget... Because you know, athletes and the program should pay the price for that.

NAU's weight room and locker room looks like shit too.. UNC's facilities kinda suprised me.

Well the top picture of unc locker room posted here is not a photograph at all but a digital rendering of a proposed locker room.

Don't sugar coat it, Brint. Our locker rooms are worse than most Big Sky schools VISITING LOCKER ROOMS. I kid you not. When I played from 04-08, Weber, NAU, Poly, and PSU had better visiting locker rooms than our home locker room. Eastern, UNC, and Idaho State had about even. Bozeman's would have been better if they had lockers but it was just an empty room. Sac State put up a fence and made us dress outside but I hear they have fixed that. By the way, that was 5-6 years ago and our locker rooms have remained the exact same. I'm assuming other schools have actually invested in the areas that players use the most during that time while we have remained idle. And don't get me started on the weight room. It was basically a storage area under the stadium that they converted to a weight room. My high school weight room is far far far better. And don't let me forget the MRSA outbreak we had in 2005 that was due to our filthy carpet in the locker room that was stained with god knows what. I was at the facility in October and that carpet looked exactly the same as when I played.

What is sad about this is that us players would sneak on this site under aliases and try to make the issue known but nothing would happen. We would talk to fans and boosters and nothing would happen. We would talk to the higher ups in the athletic department and nothing would happen. Not a damn thing. The fans got corner seating in 2003 and the upper deck in 2008. You know what the player have got during that time? More comfortable chairs in the team meeting room. It is really pathetic.

What pisses off me and most of us former players is that we would spend 11 months a year at the facility. Lifting weights, working out, watching tape, using the 12 total shower heads that actually work to rinse off, and using one of the 8 computers at the "academic center" that all student athletes have to share. We live most of our lives in these terrible conditions while attending the university. How much time do we use the stadium each year? Eight days a year tops? So why is all the money spent on you fans for just eight days a year? It makes no sense.

I hope this post only has one purpose, to mobilize you people reading it. I don't have millions of dollars lying around to fix this problem, but this site could be used (finally) for a great purpose of raising money for new facilities. I'm not asking each of you to chip in $1,000 or something like that, but if you really want to support the student athletes, give what you can. Call a friend who isn't on this site and ask what they can do, call up alums in your area, organize any kind of fundraising you can. One phone call is much better than sitting on this site and bitching about it.

I saw someone say they already pay over $500 for their season tickets, well how fun is paying $500 for watching a 5-6 team? I can assure you that we will and are losing quality players who take tours of our facility. The problem will only get worse the longer we sit on our hands.

So let me recap, people: our facilities suck, get up off your asses, and let's fix this. Time to quit being the laughingstock of 1-AA football.

Solid stuff all around, thanks for posting.

On this point above, as I've been told it's also worthwhile to point out that the "team meeting room" is actually many meeting rooms because there isn't actually a big enough room to fit the whole football team.

So we have had it wrong all along. It's not that teams don't like to play in Washington-Grizzly because of the Griz faithful, the cold, the noise or the home field advantage. All along it has been the locker rooms.

Good post, Schmidt. It's time to get a few of these things done. To put it in perspective, you guys like to hammer on Idaho and how awful they are and blah blah blah.. they're kicking our asses in facilities.. even the Kib is looking better (as good as the Kib can look, anyways). They've invested a lot in facilities.

And yet, despite all those shortcomings, you chose to play here. So, obviously there are some mitigating or compensating factors that override the shitty lockerroom/weightroom/classroom issues, no?

don't disagree with anything the former Griz player said EXCEPT the amount of days the team usues Wash-Griz. After fall camp, practice has moved almost exclusively to Wash-Griz, as well as winter condo and much of spring ball..

other than that, i totally agree. the players, who are the REASON for having football at UM deserve, and have deserved better than they are getting.

Andrew, I'm on board with your post, but you're under a major misconception that stadium expansions are for the fans. Stadium expansions are for revenue, nothing more. They pay for themselves, and in fact, the more the fans can be exploited, the better. Our admin can support that; they can connect those dots. Non revenue-generating capital investments like lockers and weight rooms are considered to be gambles because they have no connection to their importance. They don't see the payback and can't connect those dots. As you suggest, we all need to help with that. It's my understanding that there will be a major donation drive this spring to get this thing over the goal line. Expecting help from the admin - well don't hold your breath on that one.

On my visit to Montana they wouldn't even show me the locker room because it was "under construction," code for "we don't want to show you how terrible it is." The reason I chose Montana was the consecutive Big Sky Championship streak that was going on at the time, the shot at winning a National Championship, the fact that they wanted me to play running back instead of linebacker, and Coach Dave Schramm because he was my father's GA at San Diego State when I was a kid so I had known him forever.

The first reason doesn't exist anymore, the second is going to be tough sledding, and the next two are inapplicable. So if you were a Big Sky type player coming out of high school, why would you chose Montana? Serious question. Tradition? I'm not sure on that. National titles? North Dakota State has more than we do (and to think they decided to reject the "big fish in a small pond" argument of staying down in D-II while I was still playing, but that is another post). Shoot, Eastern has a more recent championship than we do. Today's Big Sky is all about parity. Put all of the teams on paper to compare them (and trust me, this is what recruits do) and Montana does not stand out like it used to. Sorry if that hurts your feelings, but it is a fact. If the final decision for a recruit came down to Montana, Eastern, or Bozeman, which program stands out? Ask that honestly. I can tell you that the facilities absolutely hurt Montana's chances and all of you should take that seriously. Don't continually kick the can down the road and say "well we have a loud stadium."

As for the the stadium contributing to wins and making teams scared? You may be taking credit away from the work the players put in with a comment like that. Noise is a distraction and it can put a team into a hole with penalties, that much is true. However, what opposing teams were scared of, and what caused them to lose those games, were the Montana Grizzly players they saw on tape leading up to the game. The guys I played with, Anderson, Mariani, Dow, Biermann, Hilliard, etc. those guys struck fear into opposing teams, not the stadium. All of those guys were Montana kids, and if we can no longer sign players of their caliber because we can't measure up to Eastern or Bozeman then we will not have a team worth watching in that stadium you love so much.

Again, sorry if this hurts your feelings but we need to face facts. If you don't believe me walk into the Adams Center and see for yourself. Just make sure you stop and donate on your way out.

You lost me at measure up to Bozeman. You realize the Cats haven't been the Griz when the Griz had their #1 QB since 2005, right? Bozeman had a fling with success. When they can continue doing it starting players like Jason Washington, let me know.

A couple of years ago I interrupted a couple of guys who were fantasizing in a thread on this board about the next stadium improvements they wanted to see. One guy wanted bat wings in the south end zone. The other guy wanted a second deck on the west side. I said we had bigger problems, primarily the locker room and weight room. But they were like kids playing with Legos and weren't interested in anything that wouldn't directly benefit fans. They told me I obviously only wanted to coddle the players, that playing in that stadium was facility-improvement enough for any player, and asked if I had seen the supposedly inferior locker room and weight room myself because they obviously thought the problems were being over-hyped.

Alpha's not always right but he's never been wrong about this program having a lot of dumb fans.

So let me get this correct, what you're saying is, you were right and they were wrong?

I guess my post was a little sh!tty. It sure pissed me off to have those guys act like I was the one with no grasp of reality.

This is somephotos of the new locker room USU built a few years ago. I would think UM could do something similar.

There's very few people here who wouldn't agree with just about 100% of that post. Ironic that people complained and wanted a more competitive BSC, and now that we have it our only real "leg up" on the competition for recruits has essentially disappeared. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.
