Little Known Fact

Well-known member
Thomas (Tommy) Mellot , little know fact. One of the greatest baseball players of all time who played for the New York Yankees between 1927 to 1946 was Mel Ott. He is the grandfather, (now departed this world) the grandfather of Mr. Tommy Mellot, I shit you not.

Do less, pop down.

At least the part of Mel Ott playing for the Yankees is BS. His hall of fame career was entirely with the NY Giants, all 22 years.

By now it shouldn’t be.

Yep.

RE: Kem's post. Ott not only played his whole career with the NY Giants, he had five years as player-manager of the team and then two years as just manager.

FYI: Mel and his wife Mildred had two daughters, neither of whom married anyone with a surname remotely like Mellot.

Another little known fact (an actual fact, BTW): Ott played Right Field, and he twice led National League outfielders in Double Plays. Yes, he could hit, but he also had a gun for an arm. Another fun fact: He batted left, but threw right.

OK I’m caught, I confess, just trying to interject some levity into our obsession with “touchdown Tommy”. Young man seems to have a bright future with our little brother to the East. One game does not make a legend and a comparison to Dickinson is conjecture at best. Both schools have had outstanding athletes through the ages. Super Dave had success for 3+ years, Tommy for one game. Now that NDSU has the tape from the semifinal game you can bet they’ll be ready for the young QB from Butte. If he can duplicate his performance against the Bison his stock will greatly increase. Until then he’s just another upstart freshman QB until he can prove otherwise. Not knocking him but his body of work is yet to be proven.
Reason for my attempt at levity was the name “Mellot “ had a familiar ring and the best I could come up with was “Mel Ott” the famous catcher for the Dodgers.

Sentiment in the right place ... humor is (almost) always a good thing. And I think most would agree that anointing Mellot as a superstar is more than a bit premature. Still, the execution fell a bit short. :D

FYI: Ott didn't play for the NY Dodgers either. And, while he did play catcher as a semi-pro, he played outfield for most of his career (some time -- late -- at 3rd base, I believe).
